Title: Grouse Pheasant Quail, Spokane Area?
Post by: ZachG on September 30, 2012, 09:26:39 PM
I'm still searching for some good area I could hunt upland game and waterfowl this season. Public, or accessible by permit, but I am new to the area and am lost as to where I should start. If anyone feels like being helpful to an experienced but non-local hunter please post any knowledge of land access in the area.

I’m in pretty much the same boat.

I did some scouting South of Pot Holes and that might be a good area.  But this is MY first season here too, so I’m not sure I’m much help to you!  :dunno:

Good luck and if you find a good public area, I’m available  :chuckle:

Grouse......you have the whole north half of the state.....if there are trees and a hint of water.....their are grouse. If pheasant is your quarry, be ready to knock on some doors in wheat country.  Waterfowl....that's a tough one. Duck guys are super protective of their areas. I would try jump shooting creeks myself.

I'm going to try jump shooting creeks this year (no decoys).

I'll be alone so if anyone would like to join in, I would welcome the company.   :hello:

I've never hunted ducks but the idea of jump shooting ducks sounds fun, I've only driven after grouse and shot coyote, good luck

I am going to do a lot of scouting this weekend on the duck opener, since I just started archery hunting this year I already got my buck and am moving on to do some more intense bird hunting already. I would prefer to hunt duck, but figure without a boat or much area to hunt here on the east side, I will go after some upland game too. Carl, if you find anything worthy sharing about, or need a partner after finding good land, let me know!

Ducks and geese get thick around Tri Cities area.  Plenty of public land (water).  Likely to have to compete with hunters with larger decoy spreads unless you go mid week.  Short drive from Spokane.  I've got decoys...just haven't pulled them out in over 15 years.  I'm still trying to get my deer (drew the multiseaon) but got my elk already.  When I was young, I hunted over some decoys and brought my waders and a float tube (before the dog) to fetch birds.  Cheap way to go if no boat or no dog.  Agree with grouse up north.  Chukars all along snake river.  Even saw a small bunch hunting with tons of quail and couple pheasants and grouse in the burned area down south of Asotin.

Tri Cities is a little far. Do you know the best way for me to get a float tube? I can get my hands on some waders next weekend but don't know about the tube. If you have any specific spots to go I might trek down to the tri cities for a weekend this year. Thanks!

Quite honestly, tri-cities isn't that far for us.  It's pretty much 1.5 hours for us in any direction to get into good bird hunting.  Anywhere closer than that, no one is going to give you a spot.  You can buy a small livingston, float tube or aluminum boat off craigslist at a decent price if you keep your eye out.
