Title: bi pod
Post by: grousegetter on October 02, 2012, 12:21:12 PM
Hey guys, I'm looking into getting a harris bi pod, but i have no idea which one to get. I'm going to use it mostly for hunting with my model 70 Winchester. I'm thinking about getting the one that adjusts from 9 to 13", but I'm not sure if it'll be tall enough, or too tall... Some input would be appreciated, thanks

this is what I use, short enough to lay down, tall enough to sit.

I have a few Harris bipods and they work well. Ever think about the Bog Pod ? I have one and it's great, universal adjustmenst. I really like mine. Kind of a do-it-all thingy.

I just read about the Harris being one of the top rated, and not horribly expensive. So no, haven't even heard of the bog pod. really the biggest problem I'm having is how high to get it. Cause  i don't want it too tall, and don't want it too short. It's kinda expensive to buy three of them to find which is the right height, you know? Thanks so far, keep it coming!

My 13"-24" was just about the perfect height for sitting. Just did'nt like it attached to my rifle all the time. So I bought a Bog-Pod tri-pod to try out.

Bog Pogs are around $100 as is every Harris. So, you're getting a Bog Pod that can do it all instead of spending a $ 100 each for a Harris. $ 100 x 4 = $ 400.

Put lock tight on the little nut that holds on the legs. If it falls off it's a real pain in the rear. They do sometimes fall off. I use the 13-24 and love them.

I have both. I like the Harris for prone and the Bog Pod for sitting, kneeling, and offhand. 9 to 13 inches is the best height for most prone conditions. Some Harris models swivel and some don't. It is better if they can swivel.

I tried several bipods.  Don't get a 9" to 13".  It's too long for the bench, and not long enough for hunting.  Worthless!  Prone--lay on the ground with those Ticks?  You gotta be kidding!  :chuckle:

I also learned that the hard way, and would also get the 13"-24". Any shorter and you cant shoot from a sitting position.

Some Harris's cant, but none swivel.  I would suggest a canting model only.  When are you ever on perfectly flat ground?  There are a lot of options on bipods these days, but after trying them all, I continue to use the canting Harris's. :twocents:

I have a 9-13. I think. That lives on my long range 300 rum. And also have another that is 13-25 that goes on other rifles. I just picked up a Caldwell deadshot fieldpod for my gf to use and it seems solid for sitting or blind Hunting. I will also use a pack or anything else I need to make a shot. Doesn't always have to be a bipod.

i use shooting sticks because i get a lot more flexibility to move around and be stable.  i dont like planting the gun and there it stays. :twocents:

trigger stick for hunting and a 9-13 for long range , if your a spot and stocker the trigger stick works well as you can use while standing up . back pack makes a good rest to !

On the Harris website they call the canting models the swivel models, denoted by an s... But they swivel on the same axis as the barrel. If you're into tactical stuff, they have an adapter that does allow the rifle to turn on a vertical axis, so you can turn it left and right, but you'd need a picatinny rail to mount it to.

I use the Stoney Point shooting monopod/shooting stick...  I set it an the length it makes a decent walking stick for balance in rough spots.  It will work for shooting from my knee if I need it.  Personally, I use the backpack if it is lower than that.
