Anybody having any luck with muzzleloaders up there? Up there all weekend and saw one bull and we have cow tags. Everywhere we scouted is getting pounded by people.
-
Welcome to the madness
-
ya we usually hunt cowiche and it is no where close to that many people. it is insane. Headed back out in the morning hoping a few guys were only there for the weekend.
-
Were you up towards Bald Mt on teh Umtanum side of the 1701?
We only seen three camps up there and maybe two rigs yesterday when we were up there :yike:
Talked to a couple guys that were hunting and they were seeing elk on the state land.
But no one was hunting up high :dunno:
-
no we were down low around garret canyon then topped out by the towers and hunted the wenas side. not really fammiliar with the 1701 area might have to get out the map
-
There was hardly anyone up there and that really surprised me too :dunno:
Check out the area at the top of Hog Ranch road and to the west to Bald Mt. Some good area in there and not much pressure this weekend (atleast for what we saw)
-
Thanks for the info do i get there by taking the 1701

FYI you probably hunted the busiest area in umtanum for elk. Most years, however, it gets better during the week.

I jumped a spike and cow yestetday. Followed a group of 5 cows and a big 6pt today. Hopefully I can get one tomorrow. I did find a big 7pt shed today though. Maybe I will see you and Jake in there one of these days Kyle. That would be cool. :chuckl :chuckle:

Heys guys, don't laugh at me! I filled my any bull tag on a true spike on 10/3 in Umtanum. First tag ever filled, all DIY all public land! It happened to be my buddies birhtday who was with me that day as well. We saw 3 elk total, 2 were prior to the season. Though I know there were more around. They were very nocturnal and nonvocal. A spike walked in to our laps on day 3 of hunting and I was happy to take him. We were actually looking for a buck for my buddies birthday when the spike showed up. Never look a gift horse in the mouth! 43yd shot, 300gr Barnes Redhot, 110gr 777 ffg. Through my Knight Bighorn. Meats at the butcher, skulls at the taxidermist. All in all great experience!
-
That is great!! Cool to do it on your buddy's birthday as well.

Congrats. size and score arent everything. If your happy with your animal thats all that matters. Congrats. Those true spikes are hard to find.

here's a couple more pics from mine and MFowlers muzzy elk hunt. It was a great experience and two years of hard work to get some elk meat in the freezer. hope everyone else has some good luck too.
-
Hell can't blame you. I filled a any bull tag with a cow one year :chuckle: I just love to eat elk.
-
Ive been on the manastash since thursday. Havnt seen an elk yet. Brother in law comes tonight with a cow tag. Dont know what to tell him. I am around tammarack springs. Nobody around here know i know why. This is the worst i have ever seen. If somone has suggestions for a cow tag im open.

Nice bull! Good luck to the rest of you!

-
Thats how many we saw
-
Nice job! I like how you showed respect by placing the wheat in its mouth for its last meal. I also do that.
-
Congrats on a nice elk... do not pass on an elk that you would shoot on the last day.
-
Just got back into town and I'll I can say is yes, there are elk in the Umtanum
Didn't fill my tag, but my hunting partner did (I'll let him share the story).
One of my favorite parts of the hunt was Sunday evening. We were down in a creek bottom that stretched deep into some flats, my buddy was ripping off a few bugles. We came across a couple guys with cow tags, they later told us they could hear people on the radios talking about the a-holes in the bottom that were bugling.
Funny thing is, what they didn't know was that a big herd bull responded to my buddy's calls and came in screaming his brains out and brought his whole herd with him. One of those same guys filled a cow tag, then we all laughed about everyone up top that was pissed off about the bugling in the bottom. Too bad for them, they missed the show because they were too busy complaining about ..... hell, I have no idea what they were complaining about. Their loss :chuckle:
-
Maybe they were upset the elks wernt in the middle of the road? :dunno: Maybe they should have dropped down for the action? :dunno:

That's cool! an ol'timer hunting the area we were in showed us that. I plan to keep that practice going on future harvests.
Just glad to have taken the next step in my big game hunting experience. I been a bird hunter of all sorts for my whole life but I been slowly getting in to big game over the last 5 years. Great to have some success in camp. I've eaten some elk in the past but I've never had a whole elk to eat. looking forward to trying a variety of recipes.
Time to focus on winged pursuits! good luck to all out there!

:yeah: I was up there myself along bald mt this week and walked at least 2 miles from the roads about 5 times and didn't see or hear wolves. Few elk way off across the canyons and deer couldn't stay away for some reason. :dunno: Read lot of stories on here about success in the peaches ridge area so probably a bunch of "you know what" if you ask me.
