Title: Clothing questions (Marino and outer layer choices)
Post by: Vo2max on October 08, 2012, 12:59:20 PM
I posted this over on the backcountry forum but figured I'd post it here as well...

I find Marino wool to be the absolute best gear to wear for warmth, moisture control and scent control BUT what I am also looking for is an outer layer which is waterproof/resistant for sitting in the snow if needed and so I won't get up soaked. I have my base layer as marino but am thinking of going with First Lite marino wool Kanab pants and then put another layer to use using either the Kuiu Attack pants or Sitka Ascent pants. I like to layer things as much as possible for obvious reason. Any experience using any of the aforementioned? Thanks in advance.

I agree merino is awesome  So you are wanting to layer the Kanab under Ascent or Attack? I think the Kanab would be a good layering piece, but personally would look for a heavier and/or waterproof outer shell. I have not used the Attack but the Ascent seems geared more toward early season IMO.

For snow sitting, can you carry/pack something to sit on?  doesn't have to be much, you can cut a piece of foam and it works...or cut a bunch of fir branches and sit on them.  I've sat in the snow with waterproof gear and stayed dry, but it froze my butt to sleep.  Numb and tough to warm up/walk.

I carry a cheap foam pad with me that makes a massive difference.

I have the attack pant and 90% (not ascent).  They are pretty light for long sitting.  They're not waterproof as you already know.  But on the go, they are great.  Depends on how you like on the fitting, I would go attack pant.

Thanks for the input everyone! Appreciated.

I think I will go with the marino wool options and layer over top of them all a wool outer layer that I already have and get a butt pad for situations where I am sitting and waiting. I had a 45min stair down with about 15 sets of eyes last fall and froze my butt off and missed a buck when all of them settled down finally due to my shaking. Still on the fence tho about an outer rain/wet/wind layer. Maybe the Attack would be the best option tho. Thanks again.

If you must have something to sit on you may want to look at a piece of Tyvek.  It is very light, waterproof, and packs up small.
