This year is going to be a fun one, Boomwhop Jr. and I took Hunters Ed together this year and this will be his 1st year. Boomwhop Jr. is 15 but has very little hunting experience. He has played tackle football every year from Aug. 1st- mid November. Last year he had a bad concussion during football and missed most of the year of football and almost all of hunting season. This spring he got dinged again during spring football and as a family we decided to hold him out for a year. This family decision was very hard on him but the silver lining is that made it possible to take Boom Jr. for a week with me to hunt.
Day 1 the drive
We picked Boomwhop Jr. up from High School at 2:30 pm and took off. (We being Boomwhop and Scotta from this sight) The drive over to our hunting spot always seems to be interesting....
Lucky we were not involved in this wreck. It did look like someone heading hunting or camping.

yikes....be safe boom and jr boom

Hopefully you won't have to pull any Dodges out of ditches this year. ;)
-
Ouch... :yike: Was anyone killed ... ?
-
Day 2 opening day
Boom Jr was very excited, hunting camp was filled with stories of 3x2's 3x4's and 4x4's everywhere in our hunting unit. My dad and uncle had been glassing and had already been in camp for a couple of days. There was even the rumor of a huge 5x5 30 inches plus.  Well opening day came and went with no shots at any deer. We did fire off a couple of shots at some coyotes, but missed. Great day lots of fun.
-
Keep um coming

Day 3
Welcome blisters. Saw lots and lots of deer, jumped the one in the photo but could not put 3 points on one side and it got away. Where the hell are all the big bucks we were told about??? Good news is the new cots from cabela's rock and the beer is cold. Sunny and hot... No shots even at coyote's today.
-
Day 4-Worlds thinest Coyote
Hunted hard all day, jumped a nice one 4x3??? but just saw head and horns. Deer then jumped a fence took a left and ran across the sky line broad side. :bash: Boom Jr did good and did not shoot.... But it was hard. No good shot or safe shot presented. We did see a unique Coyote though I think it was ran over by a steam roller. Ended the day watching 2 Bucks at 230-250 yards How big do you think they are??? Looked good through the Big Eye, took a photo via the eye phone. Talked all night on whether or not we should have shot...
-
Are you sure that buck isn't legal? Looks to be another point on right antler.
-
:yeah: To bad you were not able to see that 3rd point on the first buck. The ones in the scope look pretty nice! Good luck!
-
Very cool, I really dig hearing about young hunters out with their family making it happen! ;)
-
Thanks for sharing, really cool
-
Yes that one is a small 3x2 but we couldn't see that point for sure. Now on the 2 bucks in the spotting scope both legal 230 yards down hill 5-10 mph cross wind. Do you shoot? Which one and hold over? 100 grains 777 225 grain bullet. It was a big discussion at camp that night. If the bucks are there at daylight what to do???
-
Day 5
So after a night full of second guessing we head back to the canyon with the two bucks. The bucks are right where we left them. Well we glass the heck out of them and use the range finder 225-230 yards. Boomwhop Jr REALLY wants to take a shot. Well, laying down using the bi-pod, my sonn takes aim, I watch thru the Spotting scope as he lets smoke fly. To my shock the bigger of the two bucks does a back flip and falls off a ledge. The other bucks don't even spook and just stare at where the down buck went and look confussed. I hand my son my gun and start to reload his and tell him to be ready for a follow up shot. I am so exiced that I don't even care that the second buck is just walking across the side hill. After 30-40 seconds his buck is still not in view and my brother takes aim at the other buck and fires, cap goes bang but gun does not...WTF he puts a secod cap on and this one goes bang but the shot is a hang fire and he misses big. I finish reloading my sons gun and range the second buck, 219 yards. I throw out the bi-pod and settle down on the walking buck (I am thinking nice 3x2) and since we will be there all day with one deer why not... Aim at his back and whistle at him, he stops and I shoot---Boom----whop down he goes flips over twice and that is it. Wow Father Son double header in 2 minutes. I can't tell you guys how cool it was to see my 72 year old Dad and my son charging down the hill after his 1st deer...

Nice job Boom!! Way to drop the hammer. Congrats to you and your son!!

Great memories right there!!!

Day 5 Continued
So now I am thinking oh crap 2 bucks down, I call my hunting buddy Scotta who is hunting in a different unit and thank god he answers. Tell him the story and he is excited, but tells me I suck because he is looking at a 6x7 bugling bull at about 150 yards. He asks if I need help and I say hell yes..... He is on the way. Pop and me take our time teaching Jr how to gut his buck and he is on cloud nine. He has a slow start in that he thought we were kidding when we told him first thing you do is grab its penis and cut it off.. :yike: Well now his buck is ready to drag to the top and we walk over to my 3x2 and holy cow it's a 4x4 with eye guards. Narrow 17 inch's wide but cool as hell, except he went down in a huge field of those dang thistles. :bash: Scotta shows by this time and has 1 coke and 1 beer in his pack....WTF Dude 1 beer for 2 deer? Then laughs and pulls out the 1/2 gallon of R&R from camp. It was a long day but holy cow what a hunting trip.

Well done Boom and Jr, congrats.

Day 6
Well we head back out because Dad and Scotta have not filled their tags. Boom Jr goes with ScottA and I take the old man out. We hunt till 1pm then meet back at camp, Jr's feet and legs are done so we decide to keep him with the old farts and turn Scotta loose on his own. Us old guys decide to drive around and look for Elk due to Scotta and I having cow tags and I want to see if mountain view is as steep as everyone says it is...Yup it is. at 330pm we get a text from Scotta (BBD) He has a 24 inch 4x4 down deep in a canyon... It is going to be a bitch to get this one out before dark...
As I am walking down a very steep slope with trees down everywhere I am thinking this is going to suck. The sun is 15 minutes from setting and this deer is in deep......An hour later I look back down the hill in the near pitch black to see why we have stopped pulling the buck up. My Dad has falling spread eagle in a big hole and we have just drug the deer over him while pulling up the hill. We dust him off to see if he is OK and he says If I die right now I would die happy. He said I don't know how many more years I could be a part of a hunt like this and I am loving every moment. We started with 4 of us pulling and ended up with 6 with my Cousin and his son pulling as well. Oh yeah the big bull added to the evening by screaming at us every so often. What a cool ass trip for all. 3 nice bucks down.

Great trip, one of my favorite reads of the season, congrats

I retract my previous statement. I posted before I read the whole story. Great choice on passing the little 2x3. Awesome write up. Congrats to all the hunters. Sounds like an amazing trip.

Day 7
Well to keep the ball rolling my cousin connects on a great buck. We have a lot of deer to cut up. :chuckle:
-
congrats thanks for taking us along .
-
Great hunt and fantastic memories I'm sure.
Wish my old man would have made his 70's.....he'd have been a riot in camp. Enjoy every minute with your old man and son.
-
Day 8
Hunted hard with my dad, lots of pushes saw 100+ deer but not 1 legal buck. Nailed a coyote with the smoke pole. :IBCOOL: Feet tired Dad tired but everyone is happy.
-
Day 9
Cut Wrap repeat. Cut wrap repeat. Cut wrap repeat.
-
Day 10
After some begging, Boomwhop Jr. convices mom and grandma that having his buck mounted would be a really cool X-mas gift for him... So we end the trip at 10 point taxidermy. I hope you rifle guys have a great season and I hope Scotta pipes in with his stories of his hunt with us. His was a well earned buck, and he was the greatest hunting buddy and friend on this trip.

The field photo of my deer you can see a short piece of arrow shaft sticking out of his back , first deer I've shot with an arrow in it ! Anyone missing a three blade muzzy ?
-
How was that buck moving around? I shot a deer once with a broadhead in its hip and you would of never known it by the way it moved and ran. I cant believe how tough them things are! Great shots and great deer guys, congrats
-
Pretty sure they cleaned out every legal buck from that area :chuckle:

same with this deer , didn't act injured at all, or spooked . The broadhead was about 3 inches into his backstrap . It pulled out real easy . There was a large amount of mucus looking fluid around the broadhead . I'm wondering if it was working its way loose and would have eventually fell out ?

Nope a really really big one gave us the slip.
-
Great job BoomWhop! Only a year or so before my son joins us to make some memories like that. Cool that you got so many good pics to go along with the success.
My brother and I tagged out in the mayview unit, but opening weekend as we made our way back from Lick Creek we stopped to scope out some deer. Two different bachelor herds of mule deer with 7 bucks each, plus a couple of whitetail bucks. All 14 bucks (12 legal) were feeding less than 130 yards from the road in a closed unit. Still lots of deer out there for everybody else to tag!
Good to see your cousin and his toad buck. I haven't talked to him in years, even though we went to school together years ago. Not that he will care, but tell him Michael Denny said hi when you see him next.

Congrats BoomWhop looks like a great hunting trip.

Just got back from the butcher with 97 pounds of burger, and finished smoking 30 pounds of jerkey. Boy is a full freezer cool... Dang kids eat the jerkey as fast as I can make it. "Dad the kids in my class love your jerkey could you make some more" :bash: :chuckle: oh well--Making jerkey and watching football--Nice
