This is my 10 year olds 2nd deer season, both modern. Because of all the hunters, and the lack of calm deer, he's interested in making the switch. I use a knight bighorn, and would like to let him shoot it so he can see what it's like. I'm currently using 110grs of 777, and consider it too much for him.

I shoot a CVA Elkhorn Pro with 1:28 twist. I was not happy with the accuracy until this year. I like the Extreme Elite bullet from Precisin Rifle and talked with the company about the accuracy problem. I was shooting a 300 gr bullet and 90-110 grs of Triple 7. I switched to the 260 gr Extreme Elite and backed down to 75 grs of T7. I am 4" high at 100 and dead on at 150. I shot a 3 x4 muley a week ago at almost 140 yards. Bullet went down the neck through the top of the lungs, broke the back and ended up in the opposite ribcage. Many people say I should be shooting more powder in an inline but its a nice mild load that is accurate and apparently does the job. I would start with 70 grs and the 240 Extreme Elite and go from there. Good luck.

My 14 year old daughter uses 70 grains 3F T7 and a PR Bullet .357 175gr Duplex Dead Center. Shooting from the Traditions NW Magnum. Very flat shooting, almost no recoil load. Enough energy to harvest deer. She took a 2 X 3 at 150 yards last year...... although just about anything would drop one when shot in the neck.... :rolleyes:

I like what I'm hearing. After spending the last 2 rifle seasons with the boy, I'm reminded why I made the switch.

I've taken a few whitetails with a 240gr hp sabot, mostly with 100gr of powder, it will recoil less than the 300gr bullets. try a shot or two with 100gr, see how it is for the youngster recoil wise, you can probably go as light as 80gr and still have enough energy, but try 100gr first..

245 Gr Power Belt and 80 Grains of Loose Powder. The higher the Charge the unhappier ppl will be. Complete pass thru shots on Deer. I shot a 295 Gr round ball with 70 grains of FFF and took a muley of his feet at 80 yrds.

If shots are not far and your shooting a 250ish Gr. Bullet you can kill deer ethically with 45 gr of Powder. I started Ml at a young age also and started low for recoil and thought it was usless to boost it up to much. If your seeing flames come out of the barrel its unburnt powder that is usless for energy.

my son is eleven and he shoots with 80 grains of powder and 250 gr out of the cva elkhorn been accurate and easy on the shoulder. Good luck

My daughter (12) shoots 100 grains of pyrodex 295 grain out of a youth Rem 700M/L. She is fine with it even shot a deer this year with it (13 this year).

I am seriously thinking about doing this for my daughter too. I'm so happy I ended up switching to muzzleloader.

My brother shoots a 350 grain maxi-hunter out of my hawken with 65 gr of T7. Performance and accuracy is real good out to about 90 yards. The next light load I am going to try is the 175 dead center and 70 grains of T7.
