Does anybody else paint decoys? I did a quick spray paint job on some old goose floaters so I decided to try on my ducks. I used a foam brush. I kind of want to try to air brush the next ones.

Looks good  I paint mine with this old crappy paint so the paints comes off very easily so I have to repaint very often :P

Hey, looks good. I have a lot of respect for do-it-yourselfers.
-
Looks good  I've got about a dozen that im going to need to start touching up.

Air brush is awesom you can get a lot more detail in them but you need to have a base coat in order for paint to stick. Just my experience.
-
A guy at work has an airbrush I could use. It just takes forever using the brush.

nice job..maybe i should do that to the ones i have. keep me busy in the evenings when not hunting. what kind of paint are you using?

I paint all my decoys with clear matte spray paint. It protects the finish from scratching while rattling around in the decoy bag. It also gets rid of any glossy surfaces.

I bought the kit from bird vision for mallard drakes. i used an el cheapo hf setup and i learned a lot and went from crap to slightly above crap skills. First thing i learned is the green metallic flake paint seems to be a little tint in a jar of glitter. i used the entire bottle on just 12 heads. sposta last 24 decoys but not if you dont put a green basecoat down. the next huge obstacle was getting the white and grey to spray right. i finally learned that it goes on looking like water and when dry it turns white. I never did get it to spray right from my brush. no matter how thick or thin it would either streak like crazy or clog in 3 seconds.... sometimes both. may just be my airbrush though. i tried every pressure setting from 20 to 60. (60 was because i was pissed at how often it clogged and wanted to see if max pressure would help but it made everything worse. all the other paints would last me at least another 100 decoys but like i said, the green takes a lot of paint and i didnt put down a green base coat first so it took forever to turn green.
The kit also recommends spraying with a matte clear coat and lists 2 specific sku numbers. i couldnt find them so i bought what was habdy at michaels. after coating i read where it says uv resistant. hope i didnt cover all that uv paint up.

Anybody have anytips for doing the hens? I sprayed it black to fill in the holes where the dark spots are. Then I was going to try to wipe on some brown on the raised parts. I tried brushing it in to the lower parts but it was taking way too long. I got a few more drakes painted too.
-
get a good decoy bag too!....i painted some of my drakes and even flocked the heads and tails and some got scuffed up on the opener :bash: :bash: :bash:
a new slotted decoy bag is on the way from cabelas now! ;)

Paint the dark spots with airbrush or rattle can. Then wipe on primer for where you're going to highlight. Then highlight. By wipe I mean put on a rubber glove, paint the glove, smear glove on decoy. Works with spray paint pretty well.

At the risk of sounding like a know-it-all, I'll step up and point out a couple of thing's I see. First the good. Your color's are good IMHO but, the head's and breast's appear to be pretty dog-gone shiney to me. Either use some flocking (kinda spendy and you have to baby them afterward's) or paint on the same color's with an ultra-flat paint or daub the paint as it dries with dry towel's to get that shine off. As far as the hen's.....GOOD LUCK. I gotta hand it to those that can flock or make a hen look real. GIRL's.....so much more to them eh? :)

Just buy new hotbuys for $30?
