After a couple years hunting with my bow and a few close calls I decided to switch it up this year and hunt modern, I was lucky enough to hunt with my buddy who's mother in law has 60 acres on whidbey island which is shotgun only so I pulled out my shotty with some 3" 00buck and hit the tree stands he has set up over there. Opening morning was windy and rainy neither of which was helping deer movement! However I saw this doe @ 12 yards and decided to pass in hopes of seeing some sort of buck...last year my buddy and his son and friend took a total of 3 nice bucks so I had high hopes for one myself. Ended day 1 without a shot fired, Day 2 was less rain but super windy and saw nothing in the morning hunt. After the morning hunt we watched some football and had some lunch/beers :). We managed to stack atleast 3 or 4 cords of wood for his mother inlaw as repayment for letting us use her land, needless to say im super sore today! For the evening hunt I decided to use my ground blind set up on the edge of her field and the trees near some apple trees and figured id at least see something. 10 mins into sitting down and getting comfortable I turned and there was the doe from the previous morning, I decided to myself I was gonna take her not knowing how my schedule would pan out for the late season or the rest of the early season over on the island which goes to the 31st. I figured she was about 15 yds or less so I put my bead on her and pulled the trigger right behind the right shoulder, she took off and piled up about 25 yds from where I shot her. Needless to say I was excited I got my first deer and got to put meat in the freezer instead of tag soup! Next year ill hopefully have more vacation time and plan to hopefully hold out a while longer for Antlers!!!

How is the deer population on the island? I've thought about going to hunt on the navy base but not sure if it would be worth the drive.

I hunted private land and there were atleast 8-10 different does around..everywhere we drove seemed like we saw deer. From what i have heard is they are overpopulated cuzso few people can hunt due to so much private land and anti hunters..overall id say if you can get onto public land you'll still have a chance to get something! Goodluck!!

I thought antlerless bucks were as big as they got on the island. :dunno: :chuckle: :chuckle:

No shortage of deer, just got to find a place to hunt.. They kill more deer on the island with cars each yera than we do during the seasons, but I try to do my part..I've done real good here the last 2 years

Thanks. I'm military but not sure what the requirements are for hunting on the navy base. Definitely don't know anyone who has land there.
