Title: Republic hunting and the 550 Unit
Post by: Coweemanslayer on October 19, 2012, 08:41:23 AM
Hey Guys,

Anybody had any success in the Republic area? Let's see a few pictures. On another note, I heard they were giving out around 300-400 cow tags a year in the coweeman area. We have shot an elk in that unit every year since I can remember and my brother went this year and barely found tracks. Anybody know what the plan with this unit is?

My property borders the 550 on the western side and I have seen elk and deer every day until about a month ago. They seem to have disappeared. We have an increase in coyote activity and I think maybe that has scared them off. Very unusual not to have animals in my fields this time of year, below is a photo from last rifle elk season.

With the infestayion of wolves and cougars, the Republic area is no longer fit for deer.  I wouldn't waste your time.

There are deer in Ferry County.  Just get off the roads and back in there and you'll find deer.

Road hunting might not be as good as it was ten years ago but there are plenty of deer and mature bucks if you spend a few weekends and soak a trail cam too.

I think with the increased hunting pressure and cougars its probably lowered the population of deer but I've seen a ton of deer when you get off the roads. Every year there seems to be more and more people from the Seattle area that hunt in the unit. If you get off the road about 1000 yds you typically don't see anybody though. Was hoping people were having luck in that unit since my dad is up there right now.

As far as the coweeman, my brother spoke to a logger up near headquarters and they said they had not seen an elk in two weeks. We used to get rides up to the 200 line from these guys back in the day and there was great hunting. I wasn't sure if a lot of the deer and elk moved lower or if weyco is trying to thin the population to remove hunters off their property. Any thoughts on this?

The've killed some for sure. I know the Curlew Store had 9 deer (? memory thingy ) 1 bear. Seems like there has been more hunters this year than last. The weather has changed and has been raining a lot colder than the opening.
