There was recently a post about the guys who hunt long days, spend hours busting brush and sitting on game trails in the freezing cold while others tag out first thing opening morning. The lucky guys that get their deer 100yds from the truck. I have spent the last six years hunting Eastern Washington hard. I fill my Idaho tag each year but I'm cursed in my home state. Well this year I broke the curse with my biggest and by far easiest kill.
I'm fortunate to have my dream home surrounded by our own private land to hunt. We have some great animals but I've been unable to close the deal the last two years. Opening weekend I passed on a few 2x3 mulies which was starting to upset my wife (we need meat). I decided not to hunt Wednesday night. The high winds had stopped most animal movement. I had woke Wednesday morning to find a big bull moose bedded along our pond below the house. When I returned from work he was still there. I decided to glass him some more and admire his beautiful rack. As I was checking him out I noticed about an inch of antler points sticking out of the tall grass 20 yards in front of him. I knew instantly it was a shooter and ran to my safe to grab the 25.06. I was still in my suit and dress shoes when I ran out the door. I snuck across the property with a small bush between the buck and me. I inched between two basalt outcroppings and belly crawled up onto one to get a look at my prey. His head and neck was all I could see in the deep grass. My 200 yard groups are plenty tight for a neck shot but the wind made me nervous. If I missed it was unlikely I would get a follow up. I wait for what felt like hours. My wife and sister watched as this deer crazed idiot crawled around in a suit. Then it happened in a second. The moose got up to feed and startled the buck. He stood up facing me and I hesitated. Do I wait for him to turn and give me a broadside shot. What if he spooks and runs, or turns his back to me and walks into the trees. I rested the crosshairs on his throat and squeezed one off. He dropped in his tracks, it was all over. I could tell in the scope he was a mature buck... At least a 4x5. What I found when I finally changed and made my was down to the pond was amazing.
I wasn't sure if I was going to post on here. Does anyone really want to read about the spoiled guy that shot a deer in front of his house? Hopefully I'll have a more exciting story come elk season!

Nice buck!
-
We need more pics of this guy!!
-
Wow! That this is nice! Congrats to you! Great story!
-
Wow thats a monster! Congrats!
-
Sorry, he's a 5x8
-
Toad, congrats. Curse officially ended.
-
Yeah you go ahead and tell that story because everyone that doesn't have a home with land around it where animals roam wish they did. I would LOVE to be able to live out somewhere with some acres but work has me living close to Seattle. My parents retired a few years ago and they said they were headed out to a place like yours so I was looking forward to at least having a place like that in the family but they are still in West Seattle. With my son and now my wife wanting to start hunting I would love to have a place to take them where its safe and a good chance at seeing animals. Great story and one hell of a buck!!! I love how you whacked it in your suit too.

Sorry, can't figure out how to post more than one at a time from my iPhone.
-
Holy smokes!!! Congrats!!!!
-
This guy is the reason I haven't filled my tag in two years. I have hundreds of pictures but can't seem to close the deal during our short season. I'm bow hunting next year so hopefully he'll end up on the wall too.
-
Great Buck! Your grandkids will be telling that story some day.
-
Damn fine buck!!!
Should have snapped a photo of you in your suit with the buck. Would have become an instant Hunt-WA classic :chuckle:
-
Beautiful deer. Some times it just works out. You should have taken at least one picture in the suit though. Congrats on a deer of a life time.
-
My wife said the same thing about the suit picture. I do have pictures of the two coyotes I've shot in my birthday suit but I think those pictures belong on a different kind of site ;)
-
Nice buck.
-
amazing deer
-
Good thing you held out! What a hogg congrats!
-
That's a shooter for sure!!!
-
That is a dandy congrats
-
awesome buck and congrats on a nice whitey!!

What did the moose think about the activity?
-
Awesome buck! I will have to try the "suit" camo sometime :chuckle:
-
The bull could care less. Wife said he didn't even flinch when I shot. I was yelling and waving my arms as we walked up to the deer and he didn't turn to walk away until we were 30 yds away.
-
Yeah, you can keep the pic's of the coyote! :yike: Nice buck, and yes, I love the story. I once shot a doe with a muzzle loader off of my inlaws patio in Indiana. I enjoy the easy hunts as much as the more difficult ones. Thanks for sharing.

This looks like North of Deep Creek, Four Mound Rd maybe? Nice property either way.
-
South east of deep creek, we love it here. When I bought it the I was asking the guy about the wildlife. He said "not to many deer out here". It's funny how non hunters don't notice the animals as much
-
Awesome whitetail, the muley is incredible too!

That's very true. I worked for a farmer in Lincoln County from 2004-2006 and he gave me permission to hunt but said, "not much deer around here". I saw seven legal bucks in the first day, not to mention dozens of does and fawns.
Beatiful ground, once again. I have looked at parcels out that way several times.
-
Great buck!
-
That's a great buck. and you're correct, we all hate you for it! JK. Thanks for the story, too.

I was kinda expecting to see u in a dirty suit. Awesome buck and everyone deserves an easy one in the mix.

Three pages and the internet police haven't busted him yet for not first putting on Hunter Orange over his suit??? :chuckle:
Jokes! Sweet whitey. Good luck on that muley as well.

He forgot to say - his suit is orange. He works for Waste Connections.

Don't worry, all my suits are hunter orange. Who doesn't love the insurance agent with the orange suit and tie

-
Great job! How did the tips of those dress shoes handle that crawl? ;)
-
I would have insisted on having my picture taken with the deer while in a suit and tie. :chuckle: Post it with a caption saying, "Bill Jordan, kiss my arse!"
Fun story. Congratulations on a dang fine buck.
-
The shoes are a little scuffed up but will polish out ok. Thanks for all the support and well wishes. Can't wait to score it out tomorrow. Any guesses?
-
Yes' I do want to hear about that!!! What you described is an integral part of my dream home! Nice job... on the whole thing :tung: What a toad!,average body or big to match? :
-
Huge body! Way bigger than anything I've shot in the past.
-
great buck and very entertaining story...good job.
-
I finally got around to scoring this guy. I'm not usually very good at guessing whitetail scores. Anyone want to guess how he measured out? Gross score of course, nets are for fishing
-
What a buck my guess 168
-
Not at all an experienced scorer, but I'll say 157+ :dunno:
-
165...
-
163"
-
No winners yet. I'll add two more pics to help.
-
Last one.
-
Looks like I beat this dead horse enough. It grossed 149 7/8. It wasn't very wide considering how heavy he was. I was guessing mid 150's but I honestly don't care. It's still a trophy to me!
-
Hey, Countryboy
You are right, that is quite a trophy. I loved the story (with your wife watching, crawling through the driveway, moose just watching the world go by...).
My wife and I went to school at Eastern years and years ago. We used to entertain ourselves by spotting dear at night time at the NWR (Turnbull???). We saw scads of deer throughout the year.
But we never, ever saw a moose. This has been a couple of decades now--moose have come over from Montana/Idaho! This is really great news.
Thank you for sharing. I am sure that this will be a wonderful Christmas for you all.

Or maybe he's one of those "trash collectors" along the highway.
Congrats on your great luck Countryboy!
-
LMAO! Poetic Justice there... you bust your butt for years then pop him in the front yard!!
Great Buck! Congrats. That mulie is a keeper for sure!!!
-
Huntnnw,
I'd love to compare pictures. Where were they taken?
Pd,
We have tons of moose out here. I guess I better start putting in for a tag
-
Great bucks theres some stud bucks out your way love the mass on  buck
-
So suit and dress shoes is one thing
Wait till you are woke up at 2 am by your wife telling you to kill the coytoe yelping out back and there is a foot of snow on the ground and you are you have to make a prone shot wearing nothing with her kneling over you with the spot light.... then she gets after you when I missed... they just dont get it..
any buck is a good buck nice job...
-
Deerthug, we have a seriously out of control coyote problem out here. I always seem to spot them when in ironing my clothes in front of our second story window in the morning. I have shot 2 laying naked on our cold concrete, one wearing my robe and my wife shot one nine months pregnant in a sports bra and panties at 40yds with my Walther P99 .40. It would almost feel strange to shoot one wearing clothes :dunno:
-
i graduated from cheney hi in 1960. probably hunted where you live. mike w
-
Great buck, congrats! I would like to have seen the hero shot with the suit though. :chuckle:

;) :chuckle:

that's a great buck, congrats...

And no one mentioned ground shrinkage
What is this site coming to???
-
Hey, atleast I didn't long-arm it :chuckle:
Splitshot, I keep hearing that our property was always the popular high school party party spot. There are at least a half dozen fire rings with old beer bottles in them around the house. We own the pond south east of town, I've heard it called Indian lake. Apparently the Indians would camp there when they were going to and from spokane. I guess there were rock wall corrals before the prior owner leveled them all.
-
Not sure how I missed this one before. Very nice! Congrats.
-
ummm unless the year is set incorrectly on that game cam i wouldnt count on getting that muley :dunno:
-
Thanks Dbhawthorn!
Deaner, the date was not set correctly. That picture was 2011.
-
