So my buddies talked me into hunting elk this year with a rifle. We all put in for a cow tag and didn't get drawn. That was a bummer because it is spike only in the area they hunt.
I have never been to the Blues and with working out of town this summer and going to school full time now, I didn't get time to scout. I am wondering what to look for? I think that there will be a lot of guys hunting there since most of the prime elk area burned up this summer. My plan of attack was to get into the bottom of a draw and glass or find a well worn trail in the timber and plant it. There will probably be too many people on the ridges so I thought that my two other options are the best.
We will be in the Dayton area but not sure exactly where. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'd plant myself firmly in the bottom of a canyon that looks like an escape route away from the ridge tops if I were trying to find a spike in there. Many of the roads are on the tops of ridges. Many of the elk are on the upper part of the ridges and sidehills. Once you introduce lots of hunters, then the elk relocate to where people can't or won't go. Find that spot, and you'll think it was heaven.

No elk in the blues... Just a bunch of wolves!

I saw a very nice 6x7 bull with several cows, and a different group of a spike and cows down there during deer hunt. I think your odds are as good as anywhere else. Good Luck!

Dayton has lots of hunters but lots room to get away. You should see elk, a spike is icing on the cake. Sun shines on a dogs but every once and awhile. Good
Luck, and the burned areas are still very productive ; )

My advice is to stop by my camp and have a beer. Then well talk about the elk.

maybe that'll offset the full moon? :dunno: my old man's got a cow tag for 154. we've got a few ideas, but it's always a crapshoot if the elk will be were we want them!

The best part about this trip is that I put together a left handed Remington 700 and am going to give it to one of my friends while we are down there. He helped me out a lot this summer so I am giving it to him as a gift. He has never had a left handed gun before. I can't wait. Only his father-in-law knows about it. His dad will be there too.

 That's cool man, good luck on the hunt.

Our group just got home from Dayton,wa. Snow is about 7 inches up top and still snowing on our way back. Hard to move around, so we decided to come home and head up to the northeast corner. Lots of Hunters down low due to the snow. Anyone heading that way make sure you bring chains. Its starting to get ugly. Our group saW a total of 4 cows.no spikes.

Sounds like you helped out with many nice bulls mtncook. Maybe you could make your own thread with the last five years of work. Would love to see all those bulls.
