Title: 7mm-08
Post by: 75johndeere on August 29, 2008, 04:47:41 PM
i have a 7mm-08 i want to get into some coyotes and bobcats do you think this cartridge would so to much pelt damage?  right now GI Joe's has some .17 hmr's on sale but i would rather not buy a new rifle.

Yes it will do damage but limit yourself to broadside shots to minimize damage. I'd avoid chest shots as you'll probably blow them open.

17HMR is too underpowered for all but the closest shots. Buy one, but not for coyotes or bobcats.

It'll do some damage.
I'd use something smaller for cats...JMO.

HMR would be a great bobcat round (I use that and a 22mag myself) but I'm not too sure it'd be a good choice for a 'yote--especially if you run across a big dog. I've heard a lot of mixed reviews on how effective it is on coyotes.

From my experiences, it would be marginal at best...taking only neck or head shots, under 75yds. The avg. bobcat is about the biggest animal I'd dare take with the HMR...and even then range is limited.

FWIW, I shot a 13lb feral tomcat on the farm last year with my hmr using 17gr Vmax from a distance of about 20yds. Broadside shot with no exit...hit a rib and made it about 3" into the chest cavity....turning the insides to jello.

so would the ar with a 223 be a good round for both bobcat and yotes?

.204, .223, 22-250, 220 swift, .243 would be good to name a few.

You can buy an AR in .204, .223. or .243. which are popular Coyote choices. If you really think your going to be into the cats consider the .204.

The coyotes won't care what camo pattern it wears.

I would suggest either the .204 or .223.  .223s are a good all around caliber that wont make you go broke shooting it.  The best thing about the .204 in my opinion is that they will not cause as much damage as the bigger rounds.  Your 7mm-08 will definitely do some damage to yotes or cats.  Are you going to hunt animals for yourself or for the fur trade?  If you just want them for some wall hangers or something like that, the bigger caliber will be fine.  You wont get much out of them in the fur trade if they have a hole the size of your fist and your taxidermist is going to charge you by the minute to sew up big holes and depending on their location, they may not be hidden well.

I like the .223 cheap ammo that is everywhere you go. :twocents: You can snag an olympic arms k16 for around $750 without a scope.
