I don't know if it is 'the' buck in question, but there was one at the Winthrop check station that the bio's told me about as a 15x9 or some such with incredible mass taken during general/rifle season.

it's TRUE !!!! 10 x11 I have a picture on my cell phone and it did pass threw the RED barn check station on sunday in Winthrop. It is a Washington State Mule Deer ,and it is a record book deer...... I'd tell you where he shot it .... But that would less'en my chances for next year .....hopefully he was telling the truth ...... but being his first deer ever I'm sure he was...... I'm sure this big Boy has Passed his genetic onto some does ..... time will tell.... keep searching cause they are out there...... I'm a believer....
-
I have no words....
-
Very very nice buck. Wonder what he will score, definately nice mass but that doesn't translate to high scoring for the book. Would be a buck of a lifetime.
-
First deer ever. Thats funny. I have ran into that several times. The pleasure of growing up in the local gas station, I got to see ALOT of deer coming through. So many stories of first timers busting a big one as they were parked or spotted one driving down the road. :)
-
The NW Sports Mag site identifies the area that buck was taken. I was hunting there last Tuesday. All I saw was a few does. I wonder if the weather that came in late last week was a factor. I too would love to hear the story.
-
I couldn't believe that they put the area it was killed in when writing that article. I would be so p!$$3d off. You can't tell anyone anything anymore.
Awesome buck.
-
Wait until you see that area next year. :chuckle:
-
Monster. Congrats to the hunter!
-
That thing is GIANT!!!
Thats one lucky hunter!
Wait until you see that area next year. :chuckle:
:yeah: :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
That is an amazing buck for a first deer let alone any deer. Congrats to the hunter. Hopefully the full story will surface at some point.
-
Wow that TRIPOD BURN sure is growin big these days! :dunno: :chuckle:
-
That buck is just ... If anybody has leads on who the hunter is, please tell them we'd love to talk to them about their story for Northwest Sportsman magazine/blog -- awalgamott@media-inc.com, 206-382-9220. Thanks!

Yes!!! Will the hunter please come forward so these folks can tell us all where you found this buck! We all want a chance to hunt this spot... there must be multiple bucks up there of this caliber. :o :sry:
-
That's a giant buck!! Love to see the Washington giants!
-
Sweet buck for sure.
-
Tripod's a pretty big burn, Hillbilly, goes all the way from Loup Loup to within a half mile of Canada. I'm not looking for his spot, I'm looking for his story.

-
Wow! I definitely didn't see that beast this season.
-
I just saw this buck in person at the taxidermist, It's even more amazing than the pic's.
-
It's even more amazing than the pic's.
Is that possible 8)
-
What a dandy! Who's gunna be the first to guess score :o not that it matters, congrats to the hunter....
-
That width, mass and extra he will gross over the magic number. Unheard of for general season washington by a guy who's never killed a buck.
-
Wow. That buck has everything. The guy that killed it better start golfing. He will be disspointed with hunting for the rest of his life. Wow.
-
barley legal...or NOT. sweet buck!!!!
-
wow!
-
Incredible buck, goes to show theres still some great Methow genetics out there!
-
Wait until you see that area next year. :chuckle:
No joke, probable telling everyone :bash:
-
WOW....so nice to see a picture of a huge buck that hasnt been altered by photoshop!
-
Now its Wednesday and I was hoping to hear a story, poss. more pics. Does anyone, who knows the hunter or the hunter himself, have anything new to share?
-
The guy is friends with the taxidermist I went to so I'll try to get a hold of him. I told the taxidermist about this site, he'd never been on before but he will be soon. I'm sure we can get the shooter on to tell his story soon. Here's what I know. The guy was hunting with his 12 y.o. son at about 6000 ft when the son see's the buck and say's dad there's a huge buck! I think he said it was about 75 yards away and thrashing a tree. They take a knee and the father said for his kid to take the shot but he's all over the place and can't get steady. All of a sudden the guy feels the wind at his back and the buck throws up his head and stares at them so the dad shoots. Dead mega buck! Taxidermist say's it may break the state record of 224 I think. He thinks it'll 230! regardless it's a pig!
-
Crazy how things happen. I will probably die before I get a chance at a pig like that. My chances would improve if I get away from the westside but I know coasties are not welcome over there :chuckle:
-
It's truly a giant but from the pictures i dont see it going 230. :dunno:
-
Incredible buck, goes to show theres still some great Methow genetics out there!
Amen brother!
The tape.....as much as I measure and am usually interested in score, I might not even stretch it on this fella. I'd probably be disppointed compared to what he looks like. I think I might just remember him as IS.
MEGA BUCK!
-
I think its the angle of the pic.... :tung: Clearly that buck will be lucky to clear 180..... :chuckle: JK. AWESOME deer :yike: Sounds like a cool story to  Congrats!!!
-
Any green score on this thing yet? Some good genetics and minerals where this one was at.
-
It's truly a giant but from the pictures i dont see it going 230. :dunno:
Why's that? Do you have experience judging bucks in the 230" class? I'm putting my money on 220"+ and it wouldn't surprise me a bit if I hear it goes over 230".
Congrats to the lucky hunter. Goes to show --right place, right time--

I've never scored an animal, to me I don't care. I'm just repeating what someone said who does do it for a living. The pics may make it hard to tell but there are numerous areas on this rack that are of a bigger diameter than the bases which are huge. the measurement on the left side where it breaks into 3 tines is a prime example, bigger than I can wrap my hands around! All I know is that everybody from Cabela's to the Eastmans are going to want to display this fine animal! If the taxidermist does it justice then I'm sure his life is going to take a turn for the better also.
-
unbelieveable.... :yike:
I hope a story comes out.
-
It's truly a giant but from the pictures i dont see it going 230. :dunno:
What do you think it scores? Just curious. Please post your measurements.
-
I see it in the easy 220+ range just by these pics.... But I am no expert.....
-
What a toad, would have been cool if the kid could have held steady enough to shoot it. I think I may have had trouble holding steady on that big boy, might have shot one of the antlers off not being able to focus. Congrats to the hunter.
-
WOW! Pictures make it really hard for me to score but I heard 217".
-
I don't know maybe it is 230 :dunno:. I guess him to be about 210 maybe. Hard to tell from pictures it just not what i imagined 230 looking like.
-
about 214 net NT...... so 220 class deer.
-
Somewhere between 200 and 300 is my bet. I wouldn't even know where to start, nor would I care.
-
Why even bother trying to guess a score from a picture? It is nearly impossible on a buck like that. It will eventually get officialy score and some of you guys will still discredit the score anyway. That is an incredible deer. I can't imagine being anything but happy for the guy who shot it.
-
you guys will still discredit the score anyway
Highly unlikely! This buck is so nice, it wouldn't matter if the score was somewhere between 200 and 300. Nothing is going to take away from this guy. What a beautiful animal. There isn't one SANE member on this site that wouldn't die to harvest this buck. I would bet most members on this site will never see an animal of this quality alive in this state. I am still WOWED!
-

Did you just mention a net score?? Is it because the Methow is just open for steelies?? Shame on you. :chuckle:
I agree about not worrying about the score on this trophy, but am eager to hear the final score because it's been 9 years since the last 220"-230"ish buck was harvested within a 30 mile radius......to my knowledge. :)
-
and this one reminded me of him too! Figured some of the same genes. MASS wise anyways.
That river have any water in it yet?
-
dang it I am going to ahve to dig that photo out.......
-
What Taxi is this pig at? I wanna check it out!
-
I took the pic and I can say that without question, it does not do the animal justice. If you think it has mass, you should see it in person.
-
Awesome Buck!!
-

That's what I was saying Saylean, When I saw it in person, wow was the only thing I could say. I'd seen the pic's before hand and it was still awe inspiring! I told the taxidermist about the site so last night he read through the thread and had to laugh at some of the guesses, especially about it not even scoring 180. Him and I agree that regardless of score, it's still the buck of many lifetimes and nothing will diminish that. We are hoping that the hunter will come on and post his story since none of use have gotten the whole thing yet.
-
I think its the angle of the pic.... :tung: Clearly that buck will be lucky to clear 180..... :chuckle: JK. AWESOME deer :yike: Sounds like a cool story to  Congrats!!!
Pretty sure that was in jest to a previous monster buck thread we had.
-
Pretty cool to see the two racks side by side, and you all guess which one makes 200 :chuckle:
-
Glad I was lucky enough to be one of the six guys at the check station that day. Unreal.
-
Bone huntin did you hear the guys story?
-
Yeah. It was pretty close to what the guy heard from the taxidermist.
-
You know if he was a local or not?
-
Bone is the other buck your putting it next to the drop tine archery one? If so it should be ready to score in about ten days. What do you think the dropper is gonna go non typical?
-
This pick gives a true perspective on how big he is. I have a name of the hunter but it is not my place to say. He is a friend of my cousin. I also know where he got it. It no secret spot either. It never has been and never will be.
-

I would have let him walk.....he is not a whitetail .. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
What's amazing is the deer is whole. Usually if you ever get a chance at a big buck even half that size you have to pack it out ten miles up hill both ways. So double congrats to the hunter on a mighty fine buck and an easy pack. Some guys get all the luck. He's probably married to a super model to!!!!!
-
If you guys look at the color of the antlers, it will give you a decent indication of we're these type of bucks grow big... Just saying there's places all over the eastside that can produce large deer, just got to hunt in the right areas..
-
Exactly, but those areas have to have the right genetics running around.
-
True Bigtine, but most do :)
-
No matter what the score, amazing buck! especially for Washington
-
I think its the angle of the pic.... :tung: Clearly that buck will be lucky to clear 180..... :chuckle: JK. AWESOME deer :yike: Sounds like a cool story to  Congrats!!!
Pretty sure that was in jest to a previous monster buck thread we had.
:yeah: I thought the JK for Just Kidding and the smiley would be clear enough about my comment not being at all serious..... :chuckle: We all like to show off our deer in the best possible way. Longarming angled pics, close ups etc.... No shame in that. As a matter of fact I think it shows attention to detail and respect for your quarry to present it in such a fashion.
But this deer :yike: :yike: IMO would be impossible to show as NOT HUGE!!!! I dont care what state, province, public, private, up high, down low, prairie, mountain whatever, you are on. You see a deer like that and there is no doubt its a world class buck. Im not a picture scorer so wont even guess, And I am not trying to diminish the other buck either. But comparing all the PICTURES of the other " Record Buck" and this one well.... there is no comparison.
-
Kind of the attitude I have towards 200+ inch bucks. Lots of tape stretching out there, but when you see a REAL 200+ inch buck or a 220 inch buck, you really don't need to guess.
-

If you wouldn't mind sharing the location of those "areas" I will do what it takes to get there. Please. I live in SW as well. I'll drive if you tell me where to go...

The Tiipod burn. From LoupLoup to half mile of canada! :chuckle: :chuckle:

The Tiipod burn. From LoupLoup to half mile of canada! :chuckle: :chuckle:
It went into Canada, and there are only "Dinks" in the Tripod Burn. :'(

Thanks for clarifying where the big ones went and the DINKS still are. I am in mass confusion with all the info on this site! :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

I don't know of many areas around 6000ft with roads, but there was obviously a road very close by to get that big son of a gun in the truck whole! Amazing. What a fricken giant. Congrats to the hunter, bet he ruined that pair of britches!
-
I just keep coming back to this thread to look at this guy... what a specimen!
-
Should have the story on this buck up tomorrow -- just waiting on better pics from the hunter.

Helluva deer anywhere on this planet.

Holy snikeys.

I sure hope he got some good field photos...
-
That deer is huge! If you look at the pic of the guy (with sweet shades) holding it and the whole deer on the ground...Makes a person amazed! That is a heckuva buck and a true giant. Congrats to the hunter!!
-
I gotta say, with more and more pics showing up there is not a camera angle that makes this brute shrink an inch. Typically a guy can play tricks to make the trophy look larger, bottom line this is a giant. Wouldn't surprise me one bit if he exceeds 230" gross.
-

I though state record was alot higher than 224. :dunno:
I think typical record is gross 225 and final of 218. Nontypical is 266 final according to the 3rd edition of the "Record Book of Washington Big Game Animals".

Id like to see a field photo of the buck

Story is, her and her husband got off to a late start that morning, started their drive into the hills when she said "stop, there's a buck" He stopped, she jumped out and as he was saying "make sure its le"..........pow. He hadn't seen it before she shot, right place right time. How many guys drove past that buck that morning in the dark heading to their spots. :chuckle:

Phool is correct, I was talking aobut the "New state record".
I couldn't find the pics of the earlier buck. Its pre computer/digital for me. Next thought was it seems like it made it to a magazine, I was going to look for it next. If I reember correctly it had more mass than this guy. Its been awhile. That thing damn near made me ill to look at.

The monster muley was one of the last of 49 deer recorded by WDFW biologists Scott Fitkin and Jeff Heinlein as they checked 253 hunters during both weekends of the modern firearm season that ended Sunday (Oct. 21).
“One of the last deer we checked for the season turned out to be a very large 9x10 point mule deer with a 33-plus-inch antler width,” Fitkin said. “This is likely the largest set of antlers seen at the check station in at least the last 17 years.”
Fitkin added that the “lucky hunter harvested the estimated 4-1/2-year-old animal in the Tripod Burn area which appears to be producing excellent summer deer forage six years after the fire.”
