So my hunting trip was almost a bust. I arrived at my sisters in the NE corner Wednesday to hunt Thursday through Sunday. Well there was a little tidbit in the Waterfowl board that it is very unlikely to shoot ducks while deer hunting. I beg to differ :chuckle: After not being able to get a shot on a beauty of a buck due to brush, I headed back to the cabin. This cabin is on a huge field with a small pond at 2700 feet (No other water for a few miles). Well I look out into this pond, and there are about 15-18 widgeon stacked into this little pond :yike: :IBCOOL: I grabbed my dog and shotgun, from the cabin, and we went and shot 2 :IBCOOL: The hen landed a ways in the field, and it became like a pheasant hunt. My dog flushed it up, and I luckily put more shells in the gun, and was ready 8) Now if I could only get duck too taste like pheasant :chuckle: Anyway, the next day, I could have shot another large group of widgeons, but the season was closed :P The future hunter in the pick is one of my nephews
Back to the deer hunting, it was kind of slow. If I had a moose tag, I would have done well (like always) :chuckle: Lots of does, but the bucks were slim pickings. I seen the very nice buck the first day, and busted another good buck on Friday. Then the last day to seal the deal came. I got 3 shots at deer, and missed all three :yike: :bash: :bash: :bash: An 80 yard shot, a 50 yard shot, and a 20 yard shot :yike: :yike: I am a great shot when it comes to rifles, and then I remember my big binos falling on my scope. I went to shoot my rifle, and sure enough, it is wacked :bash: :bash: I now have no time to hunt until late season. So the truck is all packed up, and I am heading down the driveway and reach the bottom. All of the sudden :yike: :yike: Stop the truck!!! I rarely see a buck (ok so it is a spike) from the truck, but I am not complaining :chuckle: So we park away from the deer and open up the back :yike: What do I use?! Everything is buried. Rifle......scope is out of whack. 9mm....... kind of small and only had FMJ rounds. .45 Colt......buried, and good luck getting the ammo out of the bottom of the bin :yike: Hey, the 12 guage is right here, with the buckshot :yike: :chuckle: :IBCOOL: But wait, I still have to shoot. Luckily I got within 20-25 yards, because it was right around the corner so I could really get close. (I put my rifle on the shoulder, and carried the shotgun ready.) It looks at me, and BANG! Down it goes.....then it got up and started running :yike: BANG! Down it goes again, and back up, then down, then up :yike: The third shot I had to put right in the roasts :P At least it was only buckshot. The three shots were probably within 6 seconds. The third shot, made it stay down. It was still moving on the ground, so I ran up with the 30-06 and ended it.............................No late season for me :whoo: I would definitely NOT recommend buckshot too anyone, but it is all that I had, and it did get the job done. There were 4 (8 if you include entry and exit) holes in the heart alone :yike: :chuckle:
We went back up the driveway to my sisters house at 3200 feet (different from the cabin) got it gutted, and hung it for an hour, then packed and left for good. My youngest nephew in the deer picture was super excited. He just turned 2 while I was there. He is sooooo smart too. He can tell a deer from a bear from a elk from a moose from a goat, from a ram.....and a lot more. He is definitely a future hunter 8) When he saw my deer, that is all that he could say :chuckle: "Deer! Deer! Deer!" :chuckle: He also made quacks sounds when he saw the ducks :chuckle: it was a good trip 8) Even got a little snow :IBCOOL:
