Title: First time hunting elk - late archery.
Post by: KyleMB123 on October 22, 2012, 11:52:45 PM
I was just looking through my game pamphlet and realized that I can hunt late archery elk during my Thanksgiving break, so I think I'm going to give it a shot. I'm not new to hunting, but I've never hunted elk or anything with a bow (although I do have a hunting bow). I'll be in the Yakima area and was looking at GMUs 336, 346, 352, 364, and elk area 3681 (western part of GMU 368). I was hoping I could get some advice on which GMU would be best to start out in because I've never hunted in any of these areas and I'll only have 3 days worth of hunting during my break. Any tips or help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Pretty much any of the units/GMUs you mentioned are equally the same in success.
I would watch the weather it can effect you. No snow higher GMUs are better sometimes. Snow and they get hard to access.
Because of the limited GMUs they get pretty popular in the late season. I would look for national forests over state lands unless I had property to hunt. lots of private lands in the 3681 area. But there are lots of areas you can hunt also. JMO.

Bring your chains for your 4x4. With all this early snow the elk will be moving down. Most likely won't be able to get into the higher units. Good luck. I love hunting in the snow.
