Title: Rimrock
Post by: 92xj on October 23, 2012, 10:02:50 AM
I have a cow tag for rimrock.  Had two guys going with me that backed out this week.  I have been in the unit a few times early this year and last and kinda have an idea of some places to go.  I have never hunted there though.  Never hunted elk besides one day in the NE last year since moving out here 3 years ago.  This whole experience will be new for me and hopefully fun.  So, my biggest question is this...Is there anyone somewhat close to that area that I can have their number for a contact in case of emergency?  Everyone I know lives well east and would be multi hour drives to come help me if anything happens.  I wont call for help packing out or for spots or anything like that, just for emergencies.   Also, if anyone wants to meet up looking for someone to camp with or share a fire or needs help packing their animal out, let me know.  Would be more than willing to help anyway that I could.

My plan is this...
Head up Wednesday afternoon and find a place to sleep for the night.
Hunt/wonder around, stay out of the way of others Thursday, Firday, maybe Saturday and Sunday morning.
Then head home.
Never really hunted big game on public grounds before besides a spring bear where I knew I would not see any other hunters.

My biggest worry is being the new guy in the woods and running into other hunters.  I have heard horror stories from hunters on public grounds.  I know having issues with others is a very slim chance, but being that I am very comfortable in the woods, surviving alone, hunting alone and all that, being the "new guy" scares me the most.

So, just throwing this out there if there is anyone interested.  After rereading this, I am not really sure what my question is or what I am looking for, besides an emergency contact.  So, take what you will from this post and if I dont post after next weekend, come find me please!
I do have a map and game plan marked and written out for a friend here at home if I dont show back up after the weekend.  I plan to drive out each evening for cell serivce to check in.

Now I'm rambling, blah blah blah....

Thanks.

sounds like you need new friends (hunting wise)  :dunno: :dunno:  i don't let anyone bother me and as long as you don't bother them thrn not a whole lot to worry about.  oh one tip which is probably why you heard horror stories, converse and kill with kindness just don't ask "where's the elk or deer". :chuckle:

XJ, I hunt RR each year during early archery.  Shot my cow opening day.  You shouldn't have a problem.  FYI, if you have Sprint or Verizon, cell phone should work up there.  Other providers, not so much.  Buddies all used my phone this year.

Unfortunately, I live on the wet side, so not close enough for ER contact.  If wife hadn't broke her leg and required surgery, I'd come over and bear hunt while you shoot a cow.  I haven't been over during modern, but I hear it can be a sea of orange.

Good Luck.

I do have verizon, good to know!
When I was in there last, down in the bottoms I remembered not having service,  but knowing that I can stay in the woods and get a little bit high and have service is a big relief, so thank you!
