I'm not a modern rifle hunter myself, but my 7 yr old son just passed his hunter safety course, and now he is begging for an elk. I know Winston unit 520 is closed during archery but do they open gates for modern deer or elk? Any info would be greatly appreciated

Yes, the gates on the main roads are open. Good luck!

hey don't know if you need help still or not.
from what i hear and read winston is a mad house try to stay away if possible. i hunted coweeman this year for archery elk, i saw a TON of elk. granted it was not all at once or consistently but non the less there are a ton of animals down that way. you can access the unit by headquarters rd. good luck!

Grew up there bud.... Apples and oranges man..... Rifle is scary as hell in both units....
90% of the time the gates are open. You will see some critters if you hit the brush from day one... Just be careful, and try not to shoot them in the open. Dudes WILL still an elk if a opportunity presents (not the locals, majority in that unit are from up North).
