we have 2 horses, both trail great and were thinking about getting them trained for guns and packing, they are both tanks. they would make great hunting horses, until 3 days ago my buddy shows up with 2 4wd polaris quads,l hes willing to sell me dirt cheap. are quads worth using since so many places dont allow motorized access?
-
I've been hunt for 30 years and I've never used one for hunting here or in any other state. :dunno:
-
Not in WA, but are nice in Idaho.
-
Nope.
I have 3 quads for getting around my property, never used one for hunting.
-
We hunt elk on green dot roads, so we use ATVs instead of beating the crap out of our pickup. Makes the hunt a little funner too. We also camp and ride almost year around, so we really enjoy our ATVs. We also use them to work cows and get us to hunting spots on the family farm in Oregon. I would really miss my quad if I ever got rid of it!
-
I used one on private property to get from point A to point B while elk hunting in WA this year. Looks just like C-Money's. I found them to be loud, obnoxious, and smelly. I couldn't stand getting that diesel exhaust smell on my clothes while bowhunting. I appreciate the legs that God gave me and if I want increased mobility I think I'll opt for a mountain bike or horse. :twocents:

Not to mention unsafe. I hear of way too many rollover accidents to feel good taking it more than a few hundred yards.

How old of Polaris quads? If they are the older 2 storke ones then it is not worth the money.
There are draw backs for both horse and ATV. There is a lot more atv areas to ride than some people on here think. You can acess many acres as Cmoney has said. Also you don't have to bring hay and find water to ride the atv. With threats from others on this site your legally parked atv could get damaged. It seems to be the normal thing around here that atvs are the devil.
Horses will get you into pretty much any county around here and are quite. They can pack a bit more than a quad and also they can get into more rugged areas. Just remember you have to saddle and groom them each time you ride. And i some areas you have to get your horses vaccinated and some areas you have to buy feed from the ranger stations.
I have horses to use when ever I need them, but I also used to have quads. I have missed going out and turning the key, off to the races. Sometimes It can be a bitch to go catch the horses, groom them, saddle them, and hook up the trailer just to chase cows or ride for a couple hours.
You have to ask yourself if you will use the quads enough to justify having them. If you and your son want to spend time together exploring some green dot roads or find a local off road park to go have some fun for a.couple hours. They are fun to have around no doubt.
-
worth it no , but a great excuse !
-
I wish I had one or two. There are a lot of places that quads would be very useful, especially private land. It would cut a lot of time out of going from point A to B and would make retrieving game much easier.
-
If you decide not to go forward with the purchase, how about letting me know if your buddy would be willing to sell.

Diesel smell ??
-
You don't smell that?
-
I know the smell. It ends up on your clothing and does stink pretty bad. But it's not diesel. It's gas/oil.
-
I know what he meant. You stink after riding one.
-
If you ever plan on hunting Idaho they are great. We have packed a lot of elk with them in Idaho. I ride mine a little here in WA.....but so many areas are locked up and off limits to quads though. If they're a good deal, buy em and sell em.
-
since you own horses NO! Horses are a PITA and require lots of time so either make them pay by useing the hell out of them OR get rid of them and then find something to hunt from. :twocents:
-
I used to have one, but sold it because I didn't use it enough to justify storing it. It was good for doing some scouting in the summer in certain areas.
But most places I wanted to hunt they are not legal. I also didn't like the new law that requires a helmet. Actually that was probably the main reason that I decided to sell mine.
It costs at least $5000 to buy an ATV. I think you're better off getting a street legal vehicle so that it can be used on National Forest and private timberlands.
But of course it really does depend on where you hunt.
Even in areas where they are legal, the problem I had in using mine, is I never felt safe parking it on the side of the road while I was off hunting. It's too easy for someone to just load it up in a pickup and drive away.
-
Nice to have , but it is a nuisance.
In 1998 I hunted Mt St Hellen's for elk, modern, and opening day as soon it was light enough there was these quads going full throttle up and down the dirt roads. Need less to say that game was no where to be found for miles and miles.
For me it should not be allowed.
-
They are not allowed where I hunt, but sometimes I wish I could just use it to retrieve game. would save my back for sure.
-
They are a valuable tool but unless you have access to a good chunk of private land, you'll find that they stay parked more often than not. :twocents:

Most of the St Hellen's area they are not allowed. In fact, I'm not sure where they are allowed in Margaret, Toutle, Winston, or Coweeman........ :dunno:
-
Big block of state land in the Toutle unit where ATV's would be legal.
But in those other units, yeah, not so much.

I was on FR 25 pass hwy 99, that area. I left that afternoon and went to Winston

That would all be National Forest land, and all vehicles must be street legal.
-
I think everyone agrees that they should only be used where legal, but that doesn't change the utility in places they are legal. And, I don't think you can complain about quads being on roads open for motorized traffic. Whether street legal or not, there is going to be traffic and less game on roads open to vehicles. Don't hunt there if you don't like it.
-
It all depends on where you hunt and the legality/practicality of using one. I had a 3-wheeler for about 10 years that I used for hunting sometimes. When I first got it, ATVs weren't nearly as popular as now and they were allowed in a lot more places. I eventually sold it because the places to use it decreased as their popularity increased, therefore more and more ATVs were being used in the few places I could take it.
-
I know what he meant. You stink after riding one.
Bingo. Yes, you get smelly after sweating on a hike, from the inside out. but I don't think its as bad as petroleum coating you on the outside.
Most of the places I hunt, and ATV wont take you much farther than I'm willing to take my truck anyway.
-
I know what he meant. You stink after riding one.
:o I was thinking in a whole different direction! :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: I'm not sure if it's worth it. Every area I go to they are not allowed and the ones that I do see ride them on the roads and I can do that in my vehicle without the smell and be a more comfortable ride. :dunno:
-
Just ask Carp how he likes his new Samuri!
-
There are limited areas in WA where you can use them. I use mine in the Colockum because it is a much smoother ride and I'm not beating up my truck suspension. It takes about 45 minutes to go to one of our hunting spots by truck and 17 minutes by quad. I get better gas mileage too. Not that we go fast on the ATV but we go that slow in the truck. For areas where quads aren't legal I use a TW200 to get around. The reality is if I'm not on a quad or motorcycle I would be using a truck to go down the same route. The truck isn't exactly whisper quiet so either way, there's exhaust noise coming out of a tailpipe. I'd rather ride past someone in my quad than a diesel truck. Unfortunately, it's the few who stray off course that establish the new laws and restricted areas for the rest of us. As long as you find areas to use the quads in this state I would say it has been worth it to have one. I'm on my 2nd ATV so it must be worth it.
Since you already have horses, that can't be cheap. It doesn't really cost anything to park a quad when not in use but a horse can't be ignored. There's probably more areas in this state where you could use horses. If you go out of state, there are better opportunities to use a quad.

Red Ryder, you sure were spot on with your post. Very well said.

U need them in Idaho, there system is made for quads. They are a must there, I think they come in the back of every truck you buy in Idaho.`

Very useful in Idaho and Montana, not very useful here.

Funny, about 98.99% of the negative replies are coming from the westside rs. But, almost all of the quads I see coming over here during hunting season are from the westside rs. Kinda 2 faced responses in my opinion. Wanna look good on the internet........... ATVs are great.
-
More quads the better. Hopefully more counties accept them going forward. Idaho has it down.

I'm with you on that brother.
-
they are Polaris 400's 4wd with reverse units, a matched pair, he paid $6299 each, and is offering the pair for $3k
-
If they are the 2 strokes with chain drive I'd hesitate on buying them.
the chains are a pain in the butt, and the two stroke is even more stinky than a 4 stroke. The automatic hubs are a pain too.
They aren't a really good quad even new, but 1500 each if they are in otherwise good shape..one might overlook some of the issues.
If your a good wrench, then I'd say go ahead.....but if your taking it into a shop for an oil change then RUN from these quads if they are the ones with chain drive and 2 stroke.

No experience with horses but I have ridden quads for all of my life growing up for farmwork, fishing and hunting. I use quads and enduro bikes extensively in the woods and never leave a green dot. To prevent the "smell" that is often associated with riding a quad I suggest investing in coveralls you climb into before your ride and take them off before you start your hunt. I also have found that the quads are only loud if you are ripping around like an @$$. I try to leave early, drive slow with my helmet on and never fast enough to roll it. If your going fast enough to roll it....your going too fast, shouldv'e just left earlier. You can also buy silencer kits that mount to the rear and direct the exhaust down towards the ground (or just dryer hose). I may be the lucky one, but nobody has messed with my ATV's or motorcycles in 12 years of leaving it next to the road. Overall, it's all how you percieve motorized equipment. Some hate it and some love it but the bottom line is as long as it gets you out hunting, who really cares how you got there. :twocents:

Thanks 'meat. Dude im not anti atv. Hows the weather over there?
The snow is gone at my house. Had 5 inches at 3800 feet Monday plus 2-3 more on Boulder Pass today. Gonna warm up and most of it will be gone except on top.
-
Wow. $3k for both? Buy em! I used to have a Polaris Sportsman 500, and it was awesome! No they are not 2 stroke or chain driven. They have CVT belt drive which works flawlessly. Mine had the full independent suspension and had all the bells and whistles. The cadillac of quads. Polaris ATVs are just bout the best you can get IMHO.
As stated by many others, WA has a lot of red tape areas and lots of Dbags, so access may be limited in some areas you want to hunt. Just use your horses for those areas. I also think that ATVs are the best scouting tools out there as you can cover a lot more ground much quicker than in a bouncy truck.
Smell? I never noticed it. In fact when I rode on mine I actually got closer to animals than in my truck. It was as if they didn't mind the sound as much as a squeaky creaky truck. If you buy them which I think you should at such a good price, camo them up a bit so if you so park them off a road somewhere, they don't get vandilized or stolen.

I would honor the opportunity to hunt game from horses. Walking up on a number of big with horses sounds like a very exciting hunt.
Very Cool Way To Hunt!........... :fire.: :cmp1: :EAT:

Horses are ok and fun. Sometimes. A con against them, is that when you nighthitch them and take off, you gotta come back to them. No big deal, until your way far from them and your closer to camp than the *censored*ters.
-
Another option I chose is a dual sport motorcycle. licensed for roads but capable of off road even trails. i purchased a Yamaha TW200 equpied it with racks for carrying gear and rifle/bow for $3100.00 and a 4 year warranty. gps holder. now i can hunt on off road. map out my routes and mark areas during scouting. it gets 75 mpg compared to my diesel truck. I can ride on and off road on public lands something you can not do in Washington state without getting a ticket for operating an unlicensed vehicle. easier to store and haul. can use it during off season as commuter vehicle for low cost transportation about half the cost of a quad. cons: have to put feet down to stop. can't haul large loads or pull utility or other trailers. no automatic clutch. take more rider skill on challenging terrain. no endorsment test required to ride. I love my TW and found some awesome hunting areas that are only accessible by some kind of off road transportation

on many of the roads around where I live your vehicle has to be licensed and the driver too or you are open for a ticket, sucks that I can't ride from my house anymore like I did for most of my life.
Idaho is awesome, on most gates is a sign that says if your vehicle is less that ***" wide go around the gate and continue on.
-
So what did you decide?
-
:yeah: :dunno:
-
So what did you decide?
Yeah, what they asked.. I believe they are illegal on most forest lands... :twocents: :dunno:
-
You pretty much can't ride them anywhere in western Washington for hunting unless on private land. Eastern Washington has a lot of areas that are more friendly. Just watch out for all those that don't have one. They think they need to damage them for some reason.

Just watch it, so some jealous west sider doesn't vandalize it. Or carry a shovel just incase you catch them.

I hunted off of one in Idaho years ago and it worked really well. Got around in the snow a lot better, didnt beat up the trucks, and got a lot better gas mileage. It was my buddies.
I hadnt rode one or hunted off on since then, until my buddy won one in a raffle 3 weeks ago. The thing is sweet. Takes 3 minutes to load up or unload. Get to the forest roads and dump it off and go. We use it all the time now. Like said earlier is gets a lot better gas mileage and doesnt beat the hell out of my truck. We dont abuse the privilege and go off the proper roads.
