Title: Selkirk bull down (story added)
Post by: mdbuck5x5 on October 27, 2012, 08:30:04 AM
He's not a monster but he's my first bull ever taken so I'm pretty stoked. Here's a pic for now and I'll post some more later with a story. Me and my dad got some work to do and a fairly good packout ahead of us.

We may have seen you today.  I won't give a location, but on your trip back up did you see 4 adults, kids and dogs walking up the road?. Nice looking rack in the back of the truck.  If so, we have property up there, so if you need a hand, P M me.

Yeah that was us...we just got off mountain, but thanks for the offer. Me and my dad are completely wiped out. It took every bit of energy to get that bull out from where I shot him.

Well one day later and I feel like I was in a heavy weight fight and hit with a sledge hammer. Although this is my first bull taken this isn't the first time I've packed out an elk as I had helped my dad in 2005 when he shot a 7x6. We had to take the day off today, before we head back up tomorrow to get him his hopefully  :o. If we hadn't packed that whole bull out last night I don't believe we would have made it back up today. As it was I shot him at 7:25am and we didn't make it back down until 9:30pm. While the story isn't the best here it is nonetheless.

So yesterday morning we decided we wanted to be up high at first light and woke up at 3am to get our gear loaded and eat some breakfast. I really wasn't looking forward to getting up this early but knew it had to be done. By 4 we were walking in with flashlights up to the higher country. On a normal day where we don't get anything we make a 8 mile or so loop that lasts until dark and its pretty grueling. About 2 miles in we decided to split up. We forked off and decided we would meet up at the hight peak some point later in the day. At this time it was roughly 6 and was still completely dark. The fog was rolling in and out and there was about 3 inches of snow on the ground and was still coming down so the conditions were perfect. I decided after we split that I was gonna sit down under a tree and relax until it became more light to see. After about 45mins it started to get light and I got up and started walking up and old logging road that went around a point on the ridge that overlooked a clear cut that I was going to sit on for a while. Well I never made it that far. As I was walking along about another mile or so I came up over a little rise in the road. I was looking down the hill stopping and glassing and as I looked up the road about 50 yards in front of me I noticed antlers right away. His head was down but I could see he was a 5 point on 1 side and they were kind of swaying back and forth as he was eating some of the grass on the edge. Immediately my adrenaline started racing thru me to the point where I couldn't breath. After a few deep breaths I raised my 300 win mag on him and found him in the scope but realized I had to wait becasue he was facing right towards me behind some brush and I didn't want to take that shot. I waited for about 20 or 30 seconds for him to turn himself a bit and once he got to a point where he quartered toward me I took the shot. Not exactly the shot I wanted but I didn't want to wait any longer and spook him. After the shot he started to run down the mountain but after going about 20 yards he slowed to a semi jog and went about another 40 yards and then I lost sight of him in the brush. At this point I was so pumped I didn't know what to think. I decided to walk over to where he was standing when I shot and noticed a fair amount of blood in the snow. Now excitement was setting in as I knew I hit him good. I called my dad on the phone and told him I just shot a bull and told him to make his way to where I was. He was about a mile or so up the ridge from me and said when he heard the shot he knew it was me. So I started my way down thru the brush where the bull made a path in the snow and noticed blood every so often. I walked down about 20 yards looking downhill and then I noticed him. He was laying down and just looking up at me but wasn't startled at all. I raised up on him again and shot him a 2nd time in the neck. He flopped over and that was all for him. Its really been the better part of 12 years hunting elk and 20 years hunting deer hard in the 113 for me to finally get to this point. Anybody that hunts in the Selkirks for elk know how hard and arduous of a hunt it is and really luck plays a part in it. Its just all about getting in there and putting some foot miles on and hoping for the best.

Selkirk bulls are my favorite for several reasons!!!   Congrats!!  Bases look pretty darn massive!   Way to go MB5!
Yeah they were pretty decent. I put a tape on them and they measured 10".

Nice bull Jeremy, your old man should just quit hunting. I really dont think he will ever do better than the beast he shot a few years ago.

:chuckle: Thanks Jay. Yeah I tell you what he is one hurting puppy and honestly I don't know what the hell we are doing trying to get him his bull. I'm not sure either of us could go through what we went through the other day again. But you know its all for the love of hunting!
