I just wanted to start a thread for people to provide updates on whitetail rut observations. Things should start heating up over the next few weeks.
Over the past three days I have noticed the bucks have started showing a mild interest in does in 101, 117 and 121. From what I can tell the daylight buck activity has definitely picked up vs the week prior.
-
Thanks for starting the thread.
I would have thanked you by PM, but your inbox is full..... Apparently, I filled it with my last PM..... :chuckle:
-
Great thread!!!! I hope I can ad something meaningful next few days. Thanks!
-
Great to hear, heading over on the 11th for my palouse hunt.
-
Was in ferry last weekend didnt see much going on..saw fields in 121 with a lotta does..no bucks around yet. will be back in ferry checking cams this weekend
-
Saw one scrape in ferry and bucks are startin to show up again on my cams. A few rubs here and there but still a little early.
-
So a general rule of of thumb on the eastside what do you think the average "peak" rut is? Nov. 10-19? Earlier?
-
As a general rule, the late hunt is pre-rut. Rut usually happening 20th and on. There's no mystery about when the season closes. A decade ago it was open to the 22nd. There's a reason it moved back.
That said some years we get rut starting with a couple days left in the season. Last year for instance. Many years you'll find bucks staking out near does, just not chasing and pushing them yet.
-
Was in 111 all weekend and saw a lot of does but not one buck with them.. Couple weeks and they will be trailing them hopefully...
-
124 - last Monday (22nd) I came across the first scrape of the year on my property. Earliest I've ever seen a scrape, not saying rut will be any earlier just stating the date. I setup a game cam and have a basket rack 4 visiting it every night between 1:00-3:00 a.m.
I covered a lot of ground in N. Idaho over this past wknd and no activity; I suspect things will change shortly in that neck if the woods within the next 7-10 days (pre-rut that is).
-
Something flipped a switch and I am seeing bucks on my cams again as of 10/22. Before that It was a months since my last mature buck pic.
-
On Friday my 10 year old son shot a decent 4-point in 124. The bases of his horns had a lot of sappling bark strips hanging from them. I found several rublines and one that had a brand new scrape along it. My camera had several daytime buck pics as well. None of those bucks were mature but I wasn't getting any day time pics a week ago.
-
Things are heating up it sounds like. Wish I could hunt :'(
-
Didn't seem to be starting in 113 when I was there last week. Was going on hot and heavy last couple of years in the late muzzy season after Thanksgiving. I'll be hunting the modern season this year, Nov. 10-19, so we'll see... :dunno:
-
My personal observations over the years have shown a heavy "chase" phase from 20-25 November. I have even witnessed does being bred during that timeframe. That being said, every fawn drop I have ever witnessed was right around 1 June (give or take a few days). This would point towards 15 November as being the tending/breeding phase and would ultimately mean you should see chasing in the week or two prior. Looking back at my trail cam photos over the years I see the most daylight monster buck activity between 5-15 November.
-
Over the years up north I've seen some really good chasing/seeking action during the 1st week of late rifle.
Which coincidentally was taken away this year
-
Any update on the rut in the Palouse late hunt I will be heading over and hunting the 16th through the 19th.

:yeah: i leave for idaho on friday and 90% of our deer are killed between the 8th-12th

Just saw this thread. Great idea DB. Tagging for future use.
-
Hey would you guys start to rattle around the 10th in GMU 101? Is this too early? Last year I hunted around Thanksgiving weekend and saw a lot of bucks with does, and thought they already established their ground and had all their does, thought I was too late for calling since I wasn't successful calling. Can anyone shoot me some advice on what tactics to use opening day. Thanks.
-
Great topic! Havent seen much activity in the 121 yet.
-
IMO the 10th would be prime rattle time! It'll work throughout the rut. Don't believe all the TV shows. A buck locks up on 1 hot doe and when he's done with her he looks for another. During this time if he hears a buck fight he'll assume it's over a doe and come in to investigate...............or fight! Post rut is great too but probably only experienced in parts of Idaho where the season goes until December.
-
Things look good on paper for Saturday's opener in the northeast. Cold snap starting Friday. Snow possible, likely in places. The sun will be chasing what little sliver of moon there is across the sky (moonrise and sunrise are only 2 hours apart), so there will be zero overnight moonlight to contend with. Deer should be on their feet Saturday.
Key word being 'should'
-
For the late palouse havent seen anything yet its been 55 to 58 almost spring weather not nov but heard its going to cool down this weekend
-
Keep the updates coming boys!
-
Seeing lots of scrapes..lots!! The immature bucks are moving alot..tons of daylight photos of them and a number of new youngsters showing up.
-
I pulled a couple cards from cameras in 121. I was shocked at the number of new scrapes opened up just since Friday morning to today. The only big buck I have on camera is still in the dark but moving as late as 5:30 am. Not too far form sun up. I made a mock scrape Friday morning and had 4 new scrapes surrounding it toady. I wish I had a camera on it but it was an afterthought on the way back to the rig.
My wife should have agood hunt Saturday. I wish the bow season opened in 121 on Saturday.
-
gmu 127 bucks harrassing does now..my good friend has a mid 170" buck in his field tonight dogging does
-
things will get really good this weekend with the artic air pushing in friday
-
I am hitting the 204 thanksgiving weekend.
hope to connect with a nice buck.
-
Just tagging along.
-
So a general rule of of thumb on the eastside what do you think the average "peak" rut is? Nov. 10-19? Earlier?
Back in the day when late buck opened on thanksgiving day the rut was in full swing. I've hunted 121 the 2nd of Dec. and the bucks were still rutting hard. I've killed bucks the 11th veterans day that were following does.
-
lots of scrapes and rubs! A buddie rattled a very nice one in 4 days ago.
-
awesome thread! im heading out the end of next week to hunt the last 5 days of my gardner late tag. pretty jacked! hopefully i can get on some whiteys!
-
I am amazed at the number of 2 1/2 year old bucks I have on camera just in the last 4 weeks. I don't recall a year with this many bucks. I expect that some big bucks will start walking in front of the cameras soon.
-
I CANT WAIT ARE WE THERE YET!!!!!
-
just tagging. great thread
-
Spent the day in 124 resetting cams and getting ready late archery. No sign of any rut activity. Couple rubs, no scrapes, no bucks with does. Saw lots of deer in the fields, no horns that I could see
-
Tag. Also, I will be heading up Saturday for the week so I will try and update as well.
-
All of the whitetail I saw last sunday were bedded within an hour after light. Saw one decent buck bedded in the middle of 6 does, but that was it for rut activity, if you can even call it that. Did see several fawns that were alone, which I have heard (and may be complete BS) can mean that momma is ready for action.
-
-The weather on accuweather looks like its going to get real cold starting thursday! That should get them going!
-
The rut is already starting pretty good in the NE. Lots of scrapes and rubs this past weekend while doing some scouting and setting up treestands and cameras. With the cooler air coming in this weekend, it should really start to take off!
-
Well I was told the rut was over :dunno: I was at Cabelas last night and the guy running the archery counter told me so :yike:I said excuse me I don't think I heard you correctly? YEP ruts over you wont be needing any of that rut scent your after "that we don't have".
SO it must be true ITS OVER :chuckle:
-
Maybe it was the same guy at Cabelas who told me last week that he was pretty sure the Primos Can had scent in it, kind of like a dual purpose deal. Sure glad they hired these "experts" when they opened the Yakima Cabelas.
On a side note, will they generally work the same scrapes as the year before? Last year we found a string of scrapes. The scrapes were still there this Sunday, but they look old, like they haven't visited them yet this year.
-
Look for new ones. Old ones are a good in that you know that's a likely area, but look for the new ones and you're good to go.
-
I'm finding more and more scrapes every day I'm in the woods. This shouldn't be shocking as it is November and it always happens this time of year.
-
Unless the weather gets nasty in the next week I don't think the conditions will get any better for the last weekend of modern like we had last year. Single digit temps and 15+ inches of snow was exactly what the doctor ordered. If the temp starts dropping and stays cold that rut will be on like donkey kong! :chuckle: Lets hope!
-
Was out in 101 all day today. Came a across a few areas that were loaded with fresh rubs and scrapes. Jumped some deer in the brush, saw two bucks take off followed by two doe shortly afterward.
-
I'll be heading down to the 172-181 area for the Blues Late tag tomorrow. Hopefully things are starting to heat up! Cold weather the next two days along with some snow should make for a good time.
-
Any rutting reports out of the blues?
-
Saw my first rut whitetail action of the year today in the Dayton Unit. Seems like last year was ~Nov 8th - Dec 8th.
-
Up North. It's in the air.
-
Good rubs right there
-
Them are dink rubs! :chuckle:
-
I havnt been out to look at whitetail but i saw a muleys buck ruttting hard on saturday.
-
I havnt been out to look at whitetail but i saw a muleys buck ruttting hard on saturday.
I've heard reports that the muley bucks on base at Fairchild are running down paved roads at noon in hot pursuit of the ladies this week.
Only 2 days till the whitetail opener up north!! Air was crisp this morning, felt dang rutty to me
-
I saw a few scrape lines and some fresh whitetail rubs while elk hunting last weekend in the Blues. Rut should be picking up down there.
-
This is torture being out of the country right now!!! :bash:
You guys are killing me but keeping me alive too. Thank you.
-
The snow is a fallin' :IBCOOL:
-
I'd have to bet a lot of bucks will hit the dirt this weekend; rut kicking in coupled with a few fresh inches of snow = notched tags. I've always loved the stretch between Nov 11 - 15th.
-
I was out bird hunting w/ my dog yesterday and saw a Huge whitetail. All of the does scattered over the , but the buck was sniffing the ground. We walked to within 100. Yds before he noticed us. I think it scared the @&$( out of him!
-
The bucks are dogging the does.
-
snow on the ground now in 121 and still falling.. only showing 31 degrees tho, hope it drops some tomorrow night
-

I hope so, me and my pops head down saturday for our late tags :P I'm chompin at the bit!

-
Heard of a few bucks being seen on the property ill be hunting on  leaving sunday!
-
Leaving in the morning and will be in the 124 and 117 by dark to check cams. Best review gets the blind in the AM on Saturday! Good luck to all!
(and I'm happy to be going back to E. Washington (been hunting Westside elk.) IF I never see devils club, swamps or giant puckerbrush again this year it will be too soon.)
I also lie as I'll be out on the 14th trying to fill my tag.
-
Leaving in the morning for 9 days in GMU111. Good luck everyone.
-
Headed out to GMU 101 in the AM to do some scouting for my first white tail bow hunt this weekend, I hope they are moving. Will post a report on activity if I can get a signal out there. Good luck to everyone.
-
Guess I'll have to put my snow tires on before I head to 113!
Isn't 113 Closed this time of year? :sry:

-
Everyone ready?? 12 hours from now I'll be sitting in tree waiting for the sun to rise. Good luck all
-
I cant wait, I hope I can sleep tonight. Opening morning eve reminds me of how Christmas eve was when I was a kid.
-
LOTS of deer moving around in broad daylight today. dont think ill be bored at my spot tomorrow, should be lots of action. and ill have a hard time sleepin tonight too. just like last night
-
You guys suck, i have to work tomorrow and dont get to head over for my palouse hunt until sunday

Mulies are going harder than the Whitetails in the blues but over the past 3 days I have watched things start to heat up! Good luck to everyone.
-
I'm hitting the late Nov. 25th archery in 105. Any reports of rut over there?
Y'all think ill hit the post rut or hit the tail end of the peak?
-
Just got back from 101 kettle falls area. What a let down, the deer didn't seem to be where i usually see them. Of course theres tons in private fields. Sat in the tree stand for about 5 hours and that was all the cold I could take, so I hiked around until dark. Last year I hunted Thanksgiving and it seemed a little better not to mention there was a ton of snow then too. Went to Curlew and up Lambert creek rd. never hunted up that way but some neat country for sure. Saw lots of whitetail does in peoples yards and fields for the first few miles then the rd entered Forest service. The higher I got I started seeing Muleys. Man I guess I need to start asking permission to hunt where the Whitetail deer are actually at :). Can anyone give some tips on these areas Thanks guys.
-
Hunted this weekend North of Deer Park, south of Chewelah. We saw a few does, and a couple of small dink non legal bucks, and didn't see any indication that the rut is kicking in. It was 13 this morning...I need some new gloves!! Hope others were successful this weekend, and that things pick up between now and the end of season.
-
Well I just had a buckin 124 run to within 30 yards of me standing in the open cus he was chasing a doe and had his head in her crotch. Wouldnt come to calls though
-
just saw first sign of bucks in NE being rutty today. had an 8pt follow a doe and a couple fawns into my spot and he was hounding them a bit and snuffling the does pee. he hung out bout 100 yards in front of me for an hour or so but i figured he could use another year.
-
Yesterday seen a nice buck pushin a doe but that is the first sign of anything i have seen! Lots of groups of does this eve and not a buck pushin them! Maybe tomarrow!
-
Finding lots of fresh rubs and found a scrape today. Also saw a small buck chasing a doe around this morning.
-
GPS coords plz
-
I've never seen this before...
Saw two whitetail bucks running together as fast as they could. They ran about a mile or so that I could see and probably kept going. They never stopped or looked over their shoulder :chuckle: to look behind them, maybe they were just speed cruising for hot does???
-
Saw these two bucks fighting as well in Colville.. The NE hasn't been to great so far- Hunted 3 days- a few scrapes+0 rubbing.. its still early:( I don't know for late modern if we :dunno:will see the rut:(
-
I have seen a ton of scrapes and rubs in 117 and 121. My friend shot a mature buck following a doe on the first day of the season.
-
Sat in a treestand all day Saturday in 121. Pretty sure I got hypothermia but the deer were on their feet all day. Nothing legal though, all small bucks (and no does, which I thought was odd). Sat again all day yesterday and saw 2 deer, both small non-legal bucks.
I do have a marauding band of longbeards that seem to have laid claim to the ridge my stand is in at my place. 22 of them to be exact, all mature toms. They were running off all other hens and took to chasing the smaller bucks as well. Never seen anything like it, watched them do this pretty much all day Saturday and Sunday.
Anyone ever seen this? I doubt it has any effect on the rut or the bigger bucks. All the legal bucks I have on camera are still showing up in the dark.
-
I was out with my wife this morning. We had a hot doe that drug 3 bucks past us at about 30 yards. None of the 3 were shooter's but it was exciting for a few seconds as they came by spaced about 50 feet apart in single file trotting and noses down.
-
Saw zero rutting activity from whitetails, the mule deer were going nuts tho.
-
Whitetail rut is going! Saw several bucks chasing does the past couple days.
-
The rut is still early but picking up. Im guessing that in any given area a few does are coming into heat early. It only takes one hot doe in an area to get all the bucks fired up. Im guessing this is the case for the guys seeing signs of the rut, for the rest of you guys that arent seeing it just wait it will be here in the blink of an eye.
-
-Glassed up a medium 3pt bedded with a doe in a clearcut late morning, that was it for whitey action today! Had a Monster Mule deer buck run right by me chasing a doe! He was Full Rut! Maybe this rain tonight will get the whitey bucks out!
-
Went into an area on Sunday and found 5 scrapes and the start of one rub. Plan on going in there in the morning and calling and seeing if I can get something to come in. Have not seen a buck with any of the does that are around. They have always been by themselves.
-
I just got back from hunting the first 2 days of the late hunt. I found fresh scrapes and seen lots of does but the rut was not happening where I was at, however I ended up getting a small buck.
-
Just got back from 130 and the rut is not happening yet.
-
My partner and I have been seeing good sign including fresh scrapes and rubs in 111. I got a dandy 3x3 Sunday evening by taking a stand and watching a small logged over area the last couple hours of the day. Hiked in a cat road about a half mile. We saw another nice buck yesterday morning while driving my pard to his spot. Busted across the road about 20 yards in front of us. Tony got out and looked around but no luck. Will post pics when I get home. My good camera decided Sunday was a good day to refuse to work, so I have to retrieve pics off my cell phone.
Oh and my buck's neck was definitely "swelled up".
-
Just got back from 130 and the rut is not happening yet.
Well looks like I have to update my post. I just got word from my brother that a friend went into the area my daughter and I had been hunting and rattled a very nice 6x6 in and shot it. It is a dandy buck. I don't have permission to post pic so please don't ask. Late palouse tag.
-
We saw two bucks chasing does today! The buck my daughter shot tonight that we rattled in was pretty rutty.
-
THey were almost firing yesterday.....I figured this morning would be hot
-
This one had 3 does with it and was all swollen up in the neck and stinking!!! Buddie of mine just got one that was grunting a bunch a few steps behind a doe. Had a 3 point in the field chasing a doe also. ITS ON!!!!!
-
Tommy that's a brute!!!
-
That's a stud buck. Nice job Tommy. Way to get it done!!
-
In past years how long do you guys see these NE whiteys rut hard? 1 week and 1/2 or 2 weeks?
Curious how much rut I'll have come the 25th.
-
Tommy, your picture is missing the snow.....Where were you at where there isn't snow?
-
Tommy, your picture is missing the snow.....Where were you at where there isn't snow?
In the right spot!
-
This was on the 8th, last hour and last day of tribal decendants hunting season.
-
the 25th can be hit and miss..just varies area to area...first few days can be okay but other than that hope for extreme weather to get the big bucks up and moving
-
Healthy rut going in 139. Never hunted the rut before, what a kick!
-
I just returned from unit 113. I shot a small 4x4 but my buddy got a 200lb 4x4 with a big neck. We found a few scrapes and fresh rubs. I was up for four days and deer activity seemed to increase in the last two days.
-
Congrats to you and you buddy Selkirk! Any pics? I'm headed up there this weekend.
-
Just had a small 4 point chasing a doe in my backyard. I am in 49 degrees north
-
Congrats to you and you buddy Selkirk! Any pics? I'm headed up there this weekend.
mdbuck5x5, I took some old school photos (35mm) and it will be a week before I can post. Good luck this weekend. Selkirk
-
Selkirk,
Were your in N end or S part of 113?
-
Reading these posts it sounds like it's kicked in this past week. I'm chomping at the bit here at work and will be in the woods tomorrow - Monday. Can't wait :IBCOOL:
-
Any snow around Springdale and Hunters?

Any snow around Springdale and Hunters?
Last weekend, yes. Tuesday, yes - but it was melting quick

Thanks..figured that was the case

Rut seemed to kick into full swing on Monday. We started hunting Sat. saw our first buck Monday night, 3x4(killed it). Got 2 more on Tuesday(4x4 & 5x), saw 4 other shooters that day. We hunted 117. Good Luck to all!
-
Paddlehunter, We were in the south side of 113 on public land. I finally have a digital pic of my buddy's buck. I'll post with his okay. Selkirk
-
The deer have been ripping the hell out of stuff in our property in 124. Massive, violent scrapes since last weekend, destroyed trees, and does peeing all over. There also seems to be alot of evidence of fighting or does being dogged, hard to tell in the melted snow. I was able to rattle in two bucks on wed. resulting in a kill for a buddy. The big guys arent giving themselves up to be shot, but I have been seeing some tremendous animals in the middle of the day. Its on!!
-
Just got back last night from 113. Didn't seem like the rut had started there yet. Saw a lot of does, but no bucks showing interest. When I hunted the blackpowder season there, after Thanksgiving, the rut was going strong then. I thought this time I could rattle some in just out of curiosity, but no takers.... :dunno:
Hunted 4 days and came home because I was sick of the Patchy Fog. And the weather was forecast to get worse for the next 4 days. :bash:

just got back from idaho and the rut had definatley heated up in the past few days. about wednesday our camp started seeing alot more activity and several bucks chasing does. should be real good thru turkey day
-
Whitetailslyr, I was going to email you pics at work but the spam filter blocked me. I'll post next week when I have photos of both bucks. Selkirk
-
Mature bucks moving all hours of the day during the past week....usually following a doe... the rut is on!
-
Hunting the Chewuck unit and today was the first sign of rut activity. Killed a nice 4x4 after a doe. It will b a nice addition to the wall!
-
Just got back from a run and saw a 4 point trotting down the road in my neighborhood. Was acting like a rutting moron. He stopped and let me walk to about 25 yards then went back to trotting. I'm in liberty lake for what it's worth
-
They're going nuts here right now! (mt) One of the best chasing phases happening that I've seen in years!

Thanksgiving week in Liberty Lake can be quite entertaining with the rut. Every year the bucks show up in town this week, dumb as hell :chuckle:
I wish I could say the same for where I was at in 124 the past 3 days :bash: 3 days of hard hunting, saw 4 deer

The snow and cold snap we had a week ago got the ball rolling in motion but I think the rain and warmer weather we have had recently definitely put the skids on the rut. I was up in 113 yesterday and I jumped a decent 3 or 4 point with a doe that never stopped to offer me shot and a doe with a fawn but that was it. They didn't seem to be moving much and alot of that depends on the weather.
-
Grunted in and shot a small 4pt in the Huckleberry sat. Seen alot of deer but few bucks. They weren't exactly glued on the does yet were I was. Off to Idaho now to try for a big one!

I think you're right about the weather putting the skids on things. The first few days of the season were looking really good. As soon as it warmed up and started raining it seemed like it died off quick.
-
Im in 113 right now and I would agree on the rut taking a skid. I did see some chasing, but it was the younger bucks. The big boys will wait until the does REALLY ready and the swoop in to do his business. That part just hasn't happened yet.
-
10-15 Nov. I had a lot of mature buck daylight movement on cams (unfortunately I couldn't hunt those days). One thing I will say about this rain....it sucks...... Tomorrow we will be back at it again...embracing the suck.
-
I can't speak for everywhere but the areas I hunt, the rut is only as good as the weather. The nastier and colder it gets the more activity you generally see this time of year!

I took a drive around my place in 127 on friday..saw 35 does..only 2 bucks and they were together. this typical drive in the peak of the rut I see 15-25 bucks...they are not there yet in 127
-
Unit 204; On Friday the 16th we saw a 4 point glued to a doe & would not leave her even though we were only 30-40 yards from them in the truck. On Sunday the 18th spotted another 4 point with a doe and he followed her until he couldn't anymore.

Just got back from 101 and it was definitely on in the stand I was in. I chose not to shoot but 3 of the 5 in camp tagged out. I was in 121 yesterday and walked up on a buck that was with a doe. Neither seemed to care much.
-
The rut is 100% on. Had a 170ish buck chasing a doe yesterday. The rain may dampen the spirits but it's not going to dampen the rut.

I hope the videoing still goes in the rain. Can't wait to see what you guys stick. Who's shooting first? Or are there two cameras?
-
Just one cam... but we can only hunt one at a time because of the little ones. We didn't have the cam out today... too much rain...tired of it already.
-
filming in the rain is a pain and adds more stress to making sure that high dollar cam stays dry! I am using a freezer bag with the sticker fleece on the outside and a layer of duct tape on the inside..I cut a hole for my mic and lens the view finder opens underneath

I even purchased a petrol rain cover... it's still not easy... I am interested in what you are explaining...trying to picture it. Do you have a shotgun mic that sticks out? Do you cover the mic. The rain cover I have makes it a PITA to use the viewfinder (even though it's a clear rain coat... it has a hole for the mic (and or a mount for it on the outside too) but then I still need to cover the mic with something.
-
I have read about putting a condom over the mic but not sure how much that effects the sound

Heading out at 3am tomorrow for the much anticipated late archery up in 105. Can't wait!!
Any updates on if the rut has taken off again up there?

The bucks are still moving but they are definitely roaming outside their core range and much less consistent on trail cam.

You think they are at the stage of hunkering down with the does then?
-
Yep... I think a lot of them are locked down on does right now.
-
I was up putzing in my shed this weekend in 105. Haven't seen much for any deer all season. So last nite just at dark I'm starting the burn pile and letting the Q-tip out to run off some steam. I think I hear the neighbors Boar grunting next door. Nope I have a low 140 class whitetail wandering around in the pasture playing tag with about 5 does. He had way to many choices he was like a teenager at his first dance. Racing around and around. He was still chasing when it got to dark to see. :chuckle:
-
Just got back from hunting northern Idaho on Saturday after a week over there. About half the does we saw had a buck on their heels with them every step, and others oddly didn't have any with them the whole time we were there. Weather wasn't good, we tipped over a couple decent ones the first two days with the snow, but then the rain moved in and it got pretty slow.
-
Hunted 121 yesterday. It was slow but I knew it would be based on my cameras activity. Still plenty of shooter's around but haven't had a daytime pic (shooter) for a week. I believe the bucks in my area could be tending and don't need to move much regardless of time of day. I was just hoping the "right" doe would stroll in with big buck in tow. I had a couple of young bucks stop by for a few minutes to fuel up and head back out on patrol. It is pretty easy living right now if you are a deer. Outside of the urge to breed there isn't a lot to make them move much.
-
Seabass, Im seeing the exact same thing. No daytime pics of mature bucks in about a week. Have seen a couple of random bucks cruising with their nose down.
-
Same deal in 113.
-
Just got back last night and my experience sounded just like Seabass's. Driving to my stand in the morning it was 11 degrees and averaged about 25 degrees during the day and was about 18 degrees when I would get out of my stand at dark. I had little activity during the day. A handful of does, mostly with fawns and a handful of small bucks. My trail camera on the other hand would tease me each morning as it was loaded with smasher bucks. One 8x10 that I would donate a left nut for. A couple other real chunky big 4's and also just some plain nice shooter bucks. Not sure if the moon played a roll but it was definitely out in force. Cold and clear sunny skies during the day not sure how that helped either. Anyway one step closer hopefully to figuring these suckers out.

Hunted today just because I could and hoping to get lucky. In the past 36 hours I have 4 brand new bucks that anyone would shoot all at night with one exception. I baited a new spot for a buddy on Sunday afternoon. I went in to hang his stand today and on a 48 hour soak of a brand new bait site he had two mid 140's bucks in the middle of the day. Go figure. We need some weather!

You going to make it back over for another hunt?

DB you going to be wandering around up there this weekend?
I have been requested to get Grannies Lights up on the house.

Unless I fill my tag I will be up here this weekend. Starting Saturday I will probably shoot the first 130+ buck that comes my way if I can capture good video.

Man I'd love to if it wasn't a 6 hour drive for me to our cabin then another 45 minutes to our stands. If I wasn't so busy at work right now I'd still be there. Originally my dad and I had almost a week planned for it. Especially since we came a week early to set stands and bait piles. We'll see.... I might get a wild hair and an opportunity to head back over.

Also last year when I hunted the same spot this time there were a lot more deer cruising and bucks grunting. Hardly heard any grunting this time. What does that normally say about the rut? My dad and I wish we could have been there on the opener a couple days earlier but with Thanksgiving and all... Next year Turkey Day better be later in the month :chuckle: My dad and I are new at this whitetail thing but so far we have a pretty good spot locked down now just need some luck.

Good luck on your hunt for the big one. Hopefully you can make it back over and stick an arrow in him. The last week of the season should provide some good opportunities.

This year I had the most daylight mature buck movement between 10-20 Nov with 13-19 being the best seven day period.
Glad you are discovering these Washington Whitetail. We have it good here.

Cool that's what I kind of figured following this thread. Pretty nice to have this luxury for planning and preparing.
Thanks

yeah...I started this thread when Dan-O and I were having a discussion regarding the rut.. I was pleasantly surprised that it has received as much attention as it has. Hunt-wa is definitely a great resource for stuff like this. I will have to remember to start another one next season.
-
looks like the tail end of the rut is starting to really kick in at our place with the bigger bucks trolling and competing/fighting for does vs. tending like they were 7-10 days ago. last few days i have seen a few of our 4 year olds trolling aimlessly. had one of the big 4pts hit the stubble at 10:30 this morning with his mouth wide open. he lip curled several times. definitely a shorter but much more intense rut than last year. lots and lots of bucks trolling this year and/or bedded with does in the wide open. has been fun to watch.
-
Seen a 120's buck with its nose to the ground and hot on a does a## today. I thought I was going to get a front row seat how the doe was acting.

Going to head over to the Colville Kettle Falls are the last weekend of hunting the 7,8.9 th of December. Any advice on how to hunt that time of year? Will scents still work or just hunt the food sources? Will the bucks go nocturnal or what. I do know where to hunt I usually hunt the early season just havent hunted this late into the season. Any help would be great, takin my 16 yr daughter over and hoping to get her 1st deer with a bow, has already got one with a rifle when she could hunt the youth hunt, now that is over for her so she hunts with a bow now with me
Thanks

Im hoping the second rut will be going strong the last week. Usually hunting over bait late season is a good move. The deer are usually tired and hungry from chasing tail non stop and are looking to re-fuel.
-
Everyday I go either seems to be duck hunting weather or sun tanning weather and the woods are dead. I did get day light pics of the buck I've been looking for all year 3 times last week. Also have day light pics of a young 4 pt with a swollen up neck this last week
-
I'm not seeing any rut activity where I am hunting but some of my buddy's are still seeing quite a bit of rut activity as recent as last night. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for some nasty weather.

Within the last three days I have had a buck on a doe on cam... but I haven't seen any action

So your hid out up North now?

For a little while longer. Still no opportunities at one of the giants.

I have to work this Thursday and then Saturday to Thursday. I will be back at it the last two days and shoot a doe on the last day if a buck I want doesn't come out.
-
This buck has come in during daylight hours but never with does and never when my butt is in the seat.
-
I think they're mostly done down here. I have been strapped to my work (we have students shooting targets for the JROTC National Rifle Match this week), but I have a buddy with a muzzy tag that is still out hunting. Talked to him tonight and he is still seeing bucks, but none pushing does. Every buck he's been seeing is stuffing it's face...
-
I was bird hunting in the Almira area last weekend. A whitetail buck chased a doe right toward me. They were running full speed, and he was grunting.
-
where we were hunting in 127 the last 4 days we saw bucks chasing does everyday
-
Saw a buck chasing 2 does here on the south end of 117 - 2 days ago.
-
I am still learning my area and the slippery whitetail, so i have a couple questions.
Going back up for 3 days to the 204, should i sit in my tree over feed and be patient
or should i try any calling? (rattle-grunts-bleet can) Any tips from you diehard whitetail
guys would be great.

Thanks for the tip, i have only started hunting this area a couple seasons
now and haven't been there this late in the year. Deer hunting anyway.

I'm hoping the rut is completely done in 101. We are going to have a nice cold snap next week and I want the bucks away from does and on the move!
-
looks like its pretty much over..My dad is getting alot of feeding buck pics..groups of does showing up now
-
Sweet! I'll be hitting it hard all next week. By the end of the week the night time temps are supposed to be in the low single digits and teens during the day. Just my kind of hunting weather

Where would I find that picture? I am curious now.

I fed and pulled camera cards yesterday. I have been hunting a buck I call "spot". I have never captured a day time pic of him and never seen him in daylight. I pulled a card yesterday that had a pic of a doe at 5:55 am. Not a single other pic until 3:58 that same day (11 hours later) and it was spot. I hope he is starting to slip up a little. I had lots of pics with multiple bucks feeding together. I'm sure there are still some does left to breed and somone is wittnessing some rut activity somewhere but it's not happening where I am.
-
Killed "spot" last night!

Just waiting for my partner to e-mail them to me. We didn't get home until 2:30 this morning and I'm cutting him some slack. It was a nasty pack out.

I think the rut is pretty much done for the most part. I was sitting in the stand Friday and had a small 4x4 come in and feed for about 30 minutes then he took off and started dogging a doe.
-
Sorry it took me so long to get a picture posted. I almost became "that" guy.
It's not what some of you may have been thinking. This buck is no record book buck but for whatever reason I became obsessed with him from the first time I saw him on my camera back in October. I had some other bucks on camera that were definitely bigger but I always had him in my head whenever I envisioned taking a shot.
I ended up hanging 3 different sets to finally see him in the daylight at a brand new stand Friday morning. I didn't get him that morning but he came back around 4:15 and finally made a mistake.
This deer has a bunch of weird stuff going on. First off he is tiny. I'm not saying he's young, although he is not old either, he is just scaled down. His feet are tiny, his head is tiny, and I would be shocked if this deer weighed 130 pounds on the hoof. I think he is a Pygmie. Haha He has none of those lanky awkward appearances of a 2 1/2 year old he is just a dwarf. He also had black spots on him and super long hair. Just weird all around. I was bummed to see he broke off his g-3 and g-4 on the weak side. I knew the 4 was broken because he did that a couple weeks ago but he had the g-3 when I shot him.
-
Congrats

Nice buck Seabass!

Nice work!

Very nice! Congrats on getting the buck you were after.

Just saw this thread hit 12K views....far more than I ever figured it would
-
Thanks fellas! It was a great learning season.
12k views is as many as I can remember without some major controversial topic.
This one will need to be re-started next year at the same time and maybe we will get as many contibutors as viewers.
