Title: West side Elk And Weather
Post by: RB on October 31, 2012, 12:21:15 PM
Just curious what do Elk (west side) do during heavy rain wind? Are they like Deer and hunker down or do they keep moving about their day regardless? I would presume with pressure they will be in the deep and steep anyway, but how will weather affect them?

In my opinion the elk will be where they are.  Not being a smart a** but they will just go about their business as usual.  Hunting Pressure seems to he the deciding factor.

in wa ive had em hide during snow storms..and then ive had em hang out in then open all coverd in snow  :dunno:

if there's thunder an lighting tho hard telling...i don't have to much experience with this but this year during those September storms the elk went crazy an ran for cover..an never ever stopd running it seemd

Rain doesn't affect them at all, but the wind usually does. Like has been said already, I've seen them lay out in the middle of huge clearcuts all day. Since they can't count on their nose they rely on their eyesight to spot danger. Either that or heaviest nasty timber they can find!

:yeah: I couldn't agree more.  They are a lot more sensitive to people then a little bit of rain.  It takes quite a bit of snow before they start changing their routines.

I agree on the deer and elk getting out and about when it's dumping rain.   I think it is just too noisy in the woods for them to feel safe with all the big drops coming down.  They seem to like getting out in the cuts where at least they can see. :twocents:

I agree.
When I was really ambitious I loved to hunt BTs when the weather was so nasty that the power would go out. If the limbs and trees were falling I was hitting little swails in the larger cuts.

The best is during these freak ice storms!  Trees down and deer and elk start wigging out! :chuckle:
