so my bf just left for work and didn't sign off this forum, so instead of telling everyone he needs a bikini wax, I need to ask for some help... i want to go duck hunting... laying in a duck blind instead of housework, kids, or chores sounds like heaven. the problem is that my bf says i need to shoot the shotgun before he will take me... now really? c'mon aren't there like 150 chances of hitting something with every shot fired? is it really necessary to waste a day practicing? please, i need some help here guys. :)

He is right- start shooting first.

you make it sound so easy.
he probably wants you to practice before hand so you feel more comfortable handling his pump... and for safety reasons. another thing to keep in mind is that if your born after a certain date you need to pass a hunters safety course to purchase a license and if you want to shoot at a duck you had better have a license... how old are you anyway?
-
I'm 41, so i don't need to take the class. I have shot the AR and a couple of his other rifles and loved it -and i was a pretty good shot too :) I know he wants me to be safe, and I will be, but we don't have a lot of time, he works nights, i work days... so it's tough to find time... and on his days off i'm sure it would be more fun to hunt than take me to the shooting range. :dunno:
-
I dont see anything wrong with it, get set up and when the birds come in he hands you the gun and lets you have a try :dunno:.
-
screw it, just go duck hunting, its not like big game hunting where you can make a bad shot.
-

My thoughts exactly! Thanks... maybe if he thinks that he won't be frowned upon by his fellow hunters he will take me. :) Thanks!

Thanks! It's not like i'm accidentally going to shoot a flying person or something... and if i do, it was probably necessary!
-
haha, get pics!
-
Shooting a flying critter is way easy....swinging the barrel around and blastong away is kids play hunting....get out there....doesnt sound like you to waste time busting clays.
-
Pics, that's half the reason i want to go... i love when my girlfriends post pics of animals they shot... i'm jealous...
:hello: hey... i'm over here and i want to go hunting!!!

:yeah:
thanks guys! i hope you have all helped me persuade him! Clay pigeons just don't sound very appetizing... i want to shoot something i can eat, or at least feel good about riding the world of... like a coyote or a racoon. ;)

just don't try and tag along with him when he is hunting with his buddies. there is always some poor beaten soul who asks if he can bring his wife along. on hunting trips... that just makes it awkward for everyone, unless its discussed long before hand. don't put him or his buddies on the spot, of course the best thing would be to have enough sense not to ask in the first place. guys need guy time and women need women time and thats all there is to it.
maybe that is the politest way possible that your BF can think of to say "I NEED ME TIME AND YOUR NOT INVITED" it doesn't mean he doesn't like you it just means he wants to be in the outdoors by himself for a little while. everyone needs that, some more than others.
:twocents: if he wanted you to go duck hunting with him it probably would have happened by now.
-
I was kidding. Not in a million years would i want to hunt any bird with a man, woman, old fart, nebie youth until they have practiced in a controlled envirnonment.

We've only been dating for a year, I would never try to disturb his alone time, friend time, etc... i have my own life too; however i think huntng sounds fun but have never had the oportunity. I don't want to impose, just want to try and see if it might be something we could have fun doing once in a while together... nothing to do with taking him away from his buddies.
I feel sorry for the guys that have to take their girls everywhere... personally I'd rather have him hunting and having his alone time/buddy time in he woods or a field than at a bar or elsewhere... and it's definatley better than him home and grochy because he doesn't get his "time." ;) ;)
-
alright....I guess your ok ;)... no whining about being cold, or complaining about those poor little ducks and you will probably get asked to go again.
you could always buy him a day at a preserve and tag along. that would be fun casual outing with a little killing involved.
-

I was hoping I read some sarcasm in your response H2O.... ;)
I would agree, you will have a much more enjoyable time if you are not shooting the rear ends off of ducks and watching them glide off into oblivion, or just shooting an expensive box of shells at the wind.
screw it, just go duck hunting, its not like big game hunting where you can make a bad shot.
Really? Hope there was sarcasm in that one as well. :dunno: All game animals deserve for us hunters to be the most prepared we can be to make safe, ethical, and effective shots. Racoons and possums, maybe not.... ;)
-
nope, its real, you cant control the pattern of a bunch of bb's enough to make a realistic kill shot. can you control it enough to hit the bird? probably, can you tell exactly where you will hit it? nope.
-

dang... c'mon really? is it really that hard to shoot something in the air? maybe i won't hit anything, but it's not like i would be harming anything if i missed... and i have shot a gun before, just not a shotgun. :(

Shooting a moving object has very little in comnon with other shooting. No harm in missing huh....tell that to the person to your left or right as you swing on the shot. Im sirry but to me your attitude sounds reckless and dangerous.

Your right, its different, but easier, as there are a bunch of BB's spreading out, start using slugs and get back to us.
The person to the left or right dont care, in fact, they are probably happy as they get a chance at the shot.
Reckless and dangerous? So you only ground pound them and never shoot them in the air, right?
-
Who me? Nope....ive hunted birds safely and been resposible with the gun. I dont treat it a "how hard can it be". Ive spent enough time at practice to keep those around me as safe as possible while doing my best to take clean shots.
-
Thats good, me too, its pretty easy.

I cannot understand the cavalier view toward the life of a duck that I am hearing from some of the people here. If you do not shoot at a target, how would you learn what kind of a lead to give at different distances, how do you know when it is too far away to even have an effective killing pattern, etc, etc.
At least go to the range and shoot at some cardboard/paper from different distances to see what the pattern looks like at those ranges. My wife loves shooting clay pigeons and wishes we would do it more. I think she actually has more fun on the clays than shooting at ducks.
And yes, JohnV, you can control the pattern enough to shoot a duck in the head/wings vs the ass with enough practice!!!! Glad to heaqr you are a natural expert shot.

Right, I would love to go out and see you make a headshot every time, as you sound to be the best shot on the board.
Your welcome.

I'm not meaning to sound reckless or dangerus, i know the dangers of shooting... my uncle was shot with buck shot by a reckless buddie when i was a teen and I popped bb's out of his skin until the day he died. I would never take a reckless shot in any way... but shooting clay pigeons doesn't sound fun... you can't eat them and a photo of myself holding a broken one isn't very impressive.
-
If all you want is a photo op then i dont know what to tell you. Im done on this....maybe you should leave your fellas account to him and start your own. Good luck and happy hunting.
-
i'm not saying i want to go shoot at everything i can see with my naked eye... i am a good listener and don't wish to just harm an animal, i just want to try it before another window of opportunity has passed... we don't get much time together and i don't want to make him waste his time taking me to the range, i'd rather go with, give it a try and if i suck i'll practice before i go again... but i am a fairly good shot with the rifle and i do understand the physics of distance and shooting... so i'm not trying to sound reckless. Considering the responses i am getting here, he may be right (hope he doesn't read this post- haha), but maybe i should go shoot with the camera the first time and see if it is as relaxing as it sounds.

Really? You quote about as well as Obama. Nowhere did I say I shoot every duck in the head that I shoot at, but because of time spent at the range, I know that I do not shoot at ducks past 35-40 yards and prefer to have them closer. I also have an idea of how much to lead in different situations so that I am not shooting tail feathers off and watching ducks fly away with potentially lethal internal injuries.
I cannot believe ANY hunter would condone shooting at game of ANY kind without first practicing at least once. To me, this is not a safety issue as I am sure someone who has never shot a shotgun can still see if they are pointing in an unsafe direction.
I am now done on this so have fun. :bash:

Is this thread about duck hunting or relationship advice? :o

I wonder if the bf found out she was on here with his login?
-
Yep....he posted some comments in another thread. Sounds like they will get some quality time shooting some clays. Hope she enjoys it enough to want to get out and hunt up some birds.

:yeah: x2 I practiced shooting trap before I went on my first bird hunt. I even managed to hit 20 out of 25 on a round of trap last time I went, so I don't consider myself a bad shot. Ducks are MUCH harder to hit than I thought though. I went through over a box of shells shooting at ducks and only hit one. (Just ask Stilly, after I ran out of my shells he let me use some of his too.)

:hello: We had a great time shooting clay pigeons today... I think i did pretty well... and he really needs to start signing off of this forum when he isn't around. :)
Thanks for the advice guys! Happy hunting!
