Hunting-Washington
RULES
1. 30 teams max, 10 Members max per team
2. Team Size will be limited to 5 members until 30 teams have 5 members, then 1 or 2 members may be added to all teams until all teams have 7 members, then additional members may be added until all teams have 10 members.
3. Entries accepted until Midnight Feb 28, 2013. Coyotes taken from Nov 1 to Feb 28 will be accepted.
4. Washington Coyotes Only WDFW has specified that no fox, bobcat, or out-of-state coyotes can be entered.
5. Coyotes May Be Taken By Any Legal Means except NO ROADKILL found on the road dead.
6. State Hunting Licenses & Regulations Apply see: hunting at night, weapons restrictions, area restrictions, hunting near roads, etc.
7. Eligible Hunting Area includes any area statewide that's open for coyote hunting.
8. Licensed Guests/Youth may accompany team members and hunt as follows. A guest hunter is acceptable for a one time hunt. If a guest kills an animal while hunting with a team member then it can count toward your team total as long as someone from the team was there. A guest hunter can't go out by themself and shoot coyotes for any team. A guest hunter's coyotes can only count toward your team total for one hunt. If your guest hunts with you more than once, they must become a team member for their coyotes to be entered. Youth (under 18) can accompany team members and contribute to the teams total as often as desired as long as they are with a team member.
9. Adding a Team Member during the contest is allowed, but coyotes shot prior to hunting with the team do not count.
10 Photo of Kill with at least one team member or a card showing team name must to be placed with the kill and submitted for points to be awarded. Photos must be in as good of taste as possible, with the nastiest side of the coyote NOT shown in the photo. Any photo judged to be of poorer taste than necessary may be disqualified by moderators.
11. This is a "Fun" event. No hand gestures in photos, No money, No big prizes involved, keep it on the up and up.
12. Don't drag frozen coyotes around to different locations and take pictures.
13. Dispose of Carcasses in a discrete manner for nature to take its course, do not leave carcasses where they can be easily seen
14. Honor System Applies
15. Highest Scoring Team, will be based on the point system shown below.
16. Highest Scoring Member, Will be based on the point system shown below.
17. Member Taking Most Coyotes, each coyote taken scores only 1 point regardless of circumstances.
18. Most Coyotes In 12 Hours, Submit one photo, (both ears are acceptable in lieu of a pelt or whole animals).
19. Heaviest Coyote, Submit a clearly visible picture of the scale weight.
20. Best Photo, To be decided by forum-wide poll at the end of the contest.
21. Best Video, To be decided by forum-wide poll at end of contest.
22. Best Sportsmanship, Moderators will choose who exhibits the most sportsmanlike conduct, no kills are necessary.

Where is CamoKen? Last year he was one of the top dogs (61kills), this year he isn't even participating... :dunno:
He is still hunting dogs but his computer access is so limited that I didn't put him on my team. I joined with Team Dogpile and ken will not be doing it this year. It was a pain in the butt getting all his dogs posted up last year. Also because he is not really active on the site we thought it better to not add him. Last year his lack of computer access left me to post most of the dogs on his behalf. I don't think it's fair so this year I'm not going to do that. I understand doing it a few times but not for every dog. This is a HuntWA contest and if a member cant post their own stuff it's not really fair. I know it did my team good last year but it was a hassle I didn't want to deal with again.

It is funny you mention that because he is actually getting blamed for a mouse outbeak in the area because he shot too because he shot too many yotes last year...I'm starting to get a little spooked. Went out to pull the cards from the trail cam's and do some scouting for the late muzzle hunt here. The yotes were on the move good. Saw 4 and 2 of them were out in the open enough to let me setup on them and get a picture. The first one cracks me up LOL

Nice! I did some local scouting today after work. Picked up a nice piece of private property to call. Farmer told me where he's seeing the dogs and wants them dead. Gonna get out first thing Saturday morning. Hope to get some wetside points.

here is the one for me from today
went out with the gf today and did 5-6 calls only seen two this one and one on the way to a call. this one i kicked up while walking in to a set. as soon as i seen him i got down barked and stopped him at 290 yards and shot. hit him a little far back and had to track him about 150 yards or so and finish him off. nice cold day out today.

That dog on the left I gut shot at 360 yards. He ran about 75 and piled up. Spent some time around Centerville this weekend but that area doesn't seem to have the population of dogs one would expect.Sorry for that we got them thinned down around here!!!!

This little female was wandering around my 600 yard steel target. By the time I was able to grab the Green Mamba out of the safe and get setup, she had wandered in a little closer to 412 yards, I touched off the trigger on the Shilen barreled Savage 22-250 and sent the 70gr Berger VLD her way......Didn't take long to get there :chuckle:

Yeah it probably was a spring pup. I have not seen any big dogs as of yet, so far, all have been between 25 and 30 or so pounds. I saw one the other day that looked like he was still just a little pup maybe 15 to 20 pounds, probably a late hatch :dunno: We are just not seeing the dogs yet this year, maybe we killed too many last winter :dunno: Might have to take a couple years and do something else instead of chase coyotes....Hey... I heard wolves are on the come back 8) :chuckle:

Im not allowed to shoot coyotes where I deer hunt so yesterday I snapped this pic of a mouser. I also called in a deuce from about a half mile away but I was distracted by some deer when they popped in front of me so I failed to get a pic. I still have it boys!!! Seems like every yote wanted to come in, as we got up to walk out. Sand 4 was the same problem. Getting up, one is just starting to walk in (25min mark) about 300yrds away. So i drop down and try to lip squeak him in. Nothing! Go to turn on my foxpro, and smack the remote... Pup distress kicks on. Next thing we know here comes one barreling in to the left (boy side) and slams the brakes @ 100yards. Must of seen us move. Never got a shot . Last stand of the day had this one come in. My boy put him in the dirt @ 320yards. Said he was tired of waiting. 34lb male 1 more for M.N.T.

Same here... I did a total of 3 stands today... All I saw was the ass end of one run around the corner of the logging road as I was hiking out at dark... What gives, where did all the Western yotes run off too? That's 6 stands over two days this holiday weekend and all I saw was one tonight on the way out of dodge...

Got out this afternoon for some calling. Had 3 come in, one single that I just wasn't quick enough on before it got out of town. Then after about a half an hour later and a slight adjustment on my stand a pair came in but I think one of them caught scent and decided to leave. As it was leaving this male stood there and watched his pal leave, I dropped the the stupid one at 120 yards :chuckle:

and oh boy what a day it was. just got permission for an amazing chunk of land. spent most of the day there with no dogs coming in to end with the above mentioned stand (not even the best part of the story). as we were walking back to the truck a farmer that i know really well (who watches the property for the owner (which i know pretty well) that i got permission for) pulls up with a major attitude because he wasnt informed that we had permission. long story short he called the cops was a major *censored* bag and ended up calling the owner making a big stink LYING to him and got us shut down on the property for awhile. cant wait to for the next time i see the land owner in person, he will find out what i think of his watch dog. next time he askes me for help mechanicing on his equipment i guess he will be SOL

It was. I'll look into in some more later on, but I think is has to do with the permit we get, in order to have this contest. I'll see if next year we can add other species to it. But for now, those poor little coyotes are going to take a beating. :chuckle:

Later on after a stop at the ranch for a little lunch, we loaded up the dogs from the freezer from the past week and headed to the taxidermist. On the way there VV spots a dog just off the highway, we stop, I get out and start my trek up the hill through the rock bluffs. Once in view I ranged the dog at 153 yards, gave a couple squeaks on the hand call to stop him and sent one into his right front shoulder. Down he goes, flipping and flopping around then the lil' bastid get's his feet under him, so I cycle in another round, he decides he is in the right place at the wrong time and boogies the hell out of dodge with one really screwed up shoulder, I loose him in the tall stuff, searched around for a good long time but came up empty :bash: Back enroute to the taxi we go, we spot yet two more dogs, I get out, do my stalk and locate one about 120 yards out going away from me. I bark a couple times on Bearmanrics howler, he stops and I put a 50gr V-Max into him and down he goes....inerds everywhere :puke:
Load him up and head back the taxi where we finally unload the dogs from our last few days of calling.

Don't worry about the raccoon he just got in the way.
Out of the freezer and into the truck!

He buys them as is. He does all the work then sales them on a mount. Ones that are shot up will get a head, or shoulder mount.

That's cool!!! It's always nice to get some money back out of it with the cost of fuel! I don't mind all the other costs but a guy can burn some fuel hunting them each year. I forgot how much I hated skinning yotes until I shot the one the other day :chuckle: I have a buyer for the skulls and will sell what pelts I keep at the end of it all.

Last week i went out chasing yotes, spotted 2 out 700 yards, start calling rabbit distress, tried pup distress or whatever i tried nothing , yotes looked my way and walked away. I dont think they're hungry yet
I think food is too easy to get right now. They have full bellies, and could care less. It's easy to ignore an easy meal when it's this warm and bare ground makes hunting a snap!

I try to never hit them in the head, makes the pelts worthless but if you are just out to shoot 'em, dead any where is a good thing :tup:
I need to switch things up, these darn 50 gr. V-Max bullets are tearing them up really bad, too danged explosive. Think, I'll give the Nosler 50 Ballistic Tips a try they seem to be a little bit harder of a jacket and maybe they will not blow 4 and 5 inch holes in the pelts and perhaps slow them down a little.

Sorry about the quality of the photo but by the time I got it carried/ dragged out it was pretty dark.
Had just gotten to second stand, at about 2:30 ,and was taking a few minutes for everything to settle down, Was drinking a cup of coffee and looking over the area and heard a pack in the distance start raising cain, answered with a Coyote group sound on my FoxPro Firestorm. Played it for about 30 seconds and went mute. went to take another sip of coffee and holey crapola here they come 6 of them just streaming to the top of a ridge about 250 yards out( guesstimated No range finder), this boy the biggest of the bunch, was in the lead and he stood there broadside on the ridge skylined well when presented a shot like that can't say no so leaned the Sako up against the tree as a rest and sent a 55grain Spitzer on it's way. He dropped like a rock didn't even twitch no exit hole at all and have to really look hard to even see the entrance hole...The Foxpro went to KIYI and I was hoping the rest might stick around but no such luck they were gone before this lefty could work the bolt on his right handed Sako. By the time I got around to him by going further uphill and completely around the swamp was time to head towards the rig.. an hour later when I finally got to the rig was plenty dark out already then the drive home took another hour.
I know it is kind of a late start for the team but at least it is a start

It has been really slow the last couple of weeks, the weather certainly has not helped....

Would like to if the wind would ever get under 30mph. We did slip out this morning for just a few minutes before falfire had to take his wife to the city. Did see three from a long distance but falfire's calling didn't interest them at all. (his calling didn't interest me either, I thought about waiting back at the truck.) :chuckle: We'll get some before to long though.

I was able to get out for a few hours yesterday morning & get one. On my way to my parents for Christmas Lunch Gringo Called & said he was going to get after it for awhile, I told him I would be back later on in the afternoon & we could hit it hard. Since we still had snow this morning we decided that we had a little bit of time & we would give a shot, at least for a few hours. It was a rough start they just didn't seem to be moving early this morning, & of course it started off as it normally dose with Gringo "Dog Hog" he took the first couple. Than I missed one, & for what ever reason Gringo than had reel issues with anchoring the dogs down after that.... By the time we had gone though the majority of the morning hours we had put down a total of 11 dogs. Since Gringo had so many issues with hitting the pump station, I ended up cleaning up I think the final totals where Gringo 6.5 & 5.5 for myself. WOW what a great morning of hunting allot of close dogs including one that I managed to hammer with the Super 90 as he ran buy....

On Sunday I just wasn’t sure if I wanted to go out & hunt, so I hung around the house until almost 8. I just couldn’t take it any longer & through the gear in the truck & was off to play in the fresh snow.
WOW!!!!!
I am glad I got out & got after it, first stand was almost perfect. I took the both shotgun & rifle with me (Boy am I glad I Did) double right out of the gate..... :IBCOOL: Hit the first one with 3'' dead coyote at 30 yards, figured he was done so I switched up to rifle to get the 2nd one before he got back to the orchard managed to drop him 5 steps from the edge of the orchard. As I gather up my gear I realized that the first yote was gone :dunno: WHAT THE..... I grabbed the 6.8 & headed out in the field, only to find a huge red spot filled with fur. As I look around & spotted him as he was just getting to the edge of another orchard.. He did not make it in to the orchard. :IBCOOL:

I am thinking at this time, man what a great way to start a day. Little did I know that it was only going to get better. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
I managed to get 2 doubles & one group of 5 throughout the day.... No I only got one of the 5, (To Many choices) :dunno: 5 dogs at once is just to many for one guy! :yike: :yike: :yike:
But it is a good problem to have! :IBCOOL:
By the time that day had ended I had had my best day especially for hunting by myself. I took 9 dogs... :yike: What a perfect day ......

Falfire and I went this afternoon, saw this female messing around not paying any attention to us at all. She was moving away from us so I told him to give me some numbers. Went out today to sight in my gun after getting my call from my buddies work. sighted in at 200 yards shooting 3/4" groups. from there i went to take a look at some of my field i hunt and seen two dogs out sunning. first one with snow on his face was 492(dialed) and the second face down was at 540 (hold over).
tomorrow billboard and i are going out.

billboard and I went out early and got to our first spot just after lite, as we hiked our way up a hill not more than 100 yards from the car a dog jumps up ahead of us and was gone(dog1). we then moved down the road to another spot where i have seen a couple dogs before, hiked down about a half mile or so and climbed out on a rock cliff and called from there. billboard seen two dogs way out(dogs2,3), but they vanished too fast after 15-17 minutes of calling i look back to my rite toward the road we drove on to get to the spot and see dog 4 standing there at around 600 yards, he starts to move in a direction to where we wouldn't see him again i'm sure and drop him at 580 yards. after another no see set we go further down the road to spot where we can over look a huge canyon bottom, as we are hiking in billboard sees one at around 1000 yards(dog 5) and we sneak in as close as we can to get a shot. we get about 300 yards closer to a high point and notice is coming rite to us, as he is coming in i'm ranging and dialing, ranging then dialing, this dog was coming fairly quickly, we finally stop him at 450 and i shot and almost split second billboards shoots, we both hit the dog and he is bouncing around leaving a big blood trail. as we are watching the canyon we see two more to our rite and one more to our left getting out of there(dogs 5,6,7). we go down and make a few more stands and billboard sees one way out on a hike he took and i don't see any more. on the way home we saw two more dogs making for a great day out in the snow.

This little guy wasn't very smart, he appeared out in a winter wheat field as I" was walking back to the truck. He had spotted me long before I spotted him, he just stood there as I continued back to truck which put me 347 yards away from him. I took a steady rest & let it fly, was a little low as it passed through both front legs & he went down. I was about 200 yards away when I realized he was still alive, put one in the pump room & he was down for good. When I got to this little guy I realized I did him a favor, he had certainly seem better days. The picture dose not do him justice, he was extremely mangy...

They majority of the dogs in our area, usually have a pretty bad case of mange. That little male in the upper right is a perfect example of it, the other 2 females & one male are what we would call top notch dogs for our area, & we just don't see those guys to often.

what kind of camera are you using on all these pics? looks like moisture in your lense or somethingYeah could be but it is FOG .... It has been seriously foggy over here on the coast .....I am hunting only a couple miles off the salt water and all I had was my cell phone ....I have to hike a ways anymore to get to where everything is ...everything has a gate on it ...THOSE COYOTES were no more than 15 yrds from me and I used my phone to take the picture before they got shot in the neck :chuckle: :chuckle: O Well I will get after it again soon !

Spotted a coyote this morning sitting on a mound so I decided to take a poke at it. Put the cross hairs on it and just to its right was the other one laying down. I could tell the one laying down was the male so I double checked my distance @ 384 yds. and........ The female is now looking for another mate.

Fog was really socked in till about noon but after that it was pretty good. Just before it was time to pack it in for the day three dogs came trotting right at me. The first went down at 181 yds., the second one tumbled at 239 yds. The third one went out of sight to quick to get my third round off. That's ok, doubles are always nice with a bolt action.

Stepped out of the shop about 4:00pm today with the neighbor and he noticed a dog up in the field. Went over to the house grabbed the 243, got a range on her and down she went. I can't do the distance that Calib and his guys can, but 633 yds. isn't bad for an old fart.

Last night went out to call an area where this big dog has been. Saw his tracks up in the deep snow twice. Parked quad and walked into clearing. Two dogs already walking up the road. Just sat down and lip squeezed him. 2-3 minutes after sitting down...DOG DOWN. Got him near Kalama river area.
Sure wished it was that easy ALL the time.

Just got my new 6X6.8 barrel from BHW so I wanted to get it dirty. It helps when you set up and the little thing isn't 300 yds. from you around the corner, comes in and stops at 144 yds. The whole set took less than 3 minutes. I'll take luck any day. ( Sorry you had to work Falfire. ) :chuckle:

Yes, it's amazing what survival instincts animals have. I thought what I could see of her hind legs looked a little odd. Years ago I saw a Mule Deer buck that was running withone hind leg dangling by some skin. Always wondered if he made the winter. Good shooting, VV! :tup:

Seems like the event ends just as the coyote season gets good. I'm SEEING more coyotes now--just can't seem to connect. You guys like Long Range Dogs...Come hunting with ME! :chuckle:

I have really let my team down this year :bash: :bash:. I have killed 11 bobcats this past winter and a couple coyotes with a lot of blood and gore with my 7mm so I couldn't post them.

Fine I said ! He ask what we were doing ? I said spotlighting coyotes ! He says , I am no warden :dunno: I said thank god :dunno: :chuckle: :chuckle: He then ask if it was legal ? I said yes it is ! He said , have a good night !! thank you So much for understanding officer ....I really appreciate that :hello: ;) it is getting to be a joke on the westside anymore ...thats why I have not been doing as much as I would usually do because everything is so restricted over here anymore ....SAD SAD STORY !

Yep, I agree with VV. The 90% of the pelts aren't worth anything now. Besides don't know for sure but I imagine that the permit Dale had to get was for a specified time. Will let him or Raul speak for that. Besides I've been shooting them pretty much 3 days a week since Sept and I'm getting tired andI Imagine that Raul is tired of counting. :)

I hunted the westside for over 25 years so I know first hand just how difficult it is to call or even see a dog in all that brush. I put lots of miles on my rig once I realized how my hunting success changed when I learned to hunt the eastside, many of my weekends during the winter months were spent driving from Puyallup to Moses Lake area chasing dogs.
By the way, no one has tried to totally eradicate them from existence, the ranchers want them controlled but not exterminated.
I say we end it as the rules stand and next year we should consider a Jan 31 contest ending date.

This was a poor year for me, seems like I was missing 10 to one on the dogs this year :bash: Could simply not pull it together :dunno:

Last stand of the morning I set up, and with in 3 min ,in comes a Bobcat. :yike: First time I have ever seen one in the wild. Had him @ 70yds and was just so shocked to see it, that I didn't shoot him. :bash: Maybe Next Time.

Yes, WA state law prevents doing a contest for wildlife without a permit from the WDFW. If you guys want to have a topic where you post bobcat success photos that is fine, but there can be no prizes based on success or size, etc.
There is a possibility that if we submitted an application for a permit for a bobcat hunting contest we could get one. We do get permits for contests for deer, elk, bear, cougar, coyote, etc. If there is enough interest in a bobcat contest I would check into it, but please start another topic about a bobcat contest, I don't want to highjack this topic with bobcat contest posts.

This contest came to being in my brain about 5 years ago. I had my back up against a big ole pine tree and a fire built in front of me. It was fogged in and snowy and WET, a late mule deer tag burning a hole in my pocket. My mind drifted to this contest. Yeah, that was before the government, in their infinite money-grubbing wisdom, decided to allow a coyote contest only if a permit was obtained from WDFW. Another permit would be required to include Bobcats.
