Opening day was today. Anybody score in the Winston??
-
I had no luck, but I saw 5 bulls down and 3 other gut piles.
-
know of a camp that got a bull and 2 cows
-
My wife shot a 4-point raghorn. It was her first branched antler bull, so she was pretty excited.
-
No luck for me, saw a few 4pts and one monster in the back of someone's truck. I was honestly pretty shocked at the number of people flooding into St Helens tree farm and the surrounding areas. This is my first year hunting in Washington and felt like no matter how far I hiked there was still somebody in sight. I must have hiked 10 miles today! And the road hunters... :bash:

Welcome to rifle elk in Washington!
-
You got to find locked gates.
-
not to be negative but good luck finding locked gates on the weekend. there are a few gates locked up during the week. you would have to call the hotline as the areas open to hunt will change during the week as the active logging areas gates will usually be closed. i hunted a different area of the tree farm yesterday. the road hunters were as bad as always. did not see any elk saw one doe. thats rifle hunting thats the way it is. im takeing today off will be out there tommorow and most of the rest of the week. i hunt a different unit in the tree farm. dont hunt the winston usually as its usually alot more crowded!
-
we got one 4x4 first elk for the hunter
-
I took my son out we saw 1 cow all weekend but we heard of a 5x8 that was killed in there opening day

Almost makes me glad I didn't have the money to go out elk hunting this season. Only thing you're gonna see in the Winston is a lot of trucks and lots of orange, and empty Busch Light cans on the side of every road! :chuckle:

Makes me appreciate archery season that much more, other then opening weekend of both the early and late season, I rarely see other hunters.

Shot a 3X3...Had "Hoof rot"; one hoof only.
Seen another guys 5x4(?), it had some hoof rot as well.
-
We went down for the opener. Seen 8 cows down low. One of the cows had a real bad hurt back leg. Looked to be very painful. Up higher only one grouse to be seen:/
-
4 of us tagged two rag horns 50% success rate both were 3x3's now out to get the other tags filled.
-
Sure did, I smoked a nice 6x5 at first light...saw a ton of people camped along the river. My shot was the first of the morning.Started hearing shots shortly after.Talked to a guy at the Market store that had a nice 6x6 that could of been my Bull's twin.5 hrs to get it to the truck,Feels like i went 12 rounds with the Champ still...

You weren't the guy with the yellow mtn bike were you?

Took my dad out beatin the roads for a bit this morn. Saw some guys dragging out a nice bull about 1/2 way to the top of the hill as you head up to the gate where you drop over to Green river hatchery. 1901 I think.
-
No..we were in the ford ranger with all the rope and tow block
-
We hunted the lower end of the unit, 4500 road system I think. Saw 2 cows and only 1 bull in the back of a truck. Everyone we talked to said the hunting, amount of animals seen was the worst they ever saw. I talked to a couple of old timers that have hunted the area for 35 and 40 years, and they said it was terrible!
I agree with the earlier post about not being able to get away from other hunters or roads. I hiked in many skidder roads only to have someone drive past me or I ran into other roads. I hiked into the dark timber on Saturday to get away from roads and hunter only to have a truck drive by about 70 yards away! Here I thought I was in the middle of nowhere, but I just hiked to the next road! :chuckle: I'm going to go back down Fri and Sat hopefully. I need to find a new area of the tree farm to hunt.

thats weird...esp since archery didnt do so well

Heard the opposite. Lots of bulls down opening day. Two killed on our family tree farm. One had bad hoof rot on three feet. Sad. True, only time Weyco. opens the gates, and they have opened every gate this year. They want the elk gone. Because they spray for "total vegetation control" the clear cuts don't have the feed they used to--just tansy and thistle. So what do the elk and deer eat? Trees! The elk even pull them up. That's why the WDFW wants the heard reduced 25% (at King Weyco's command). Just wait, once the population is down, they will lock up full time.

id bet it has alot to do with the amount of rifle cow tags they've been giving out the past years...

Up the 19 mile a saw dead bulls everywhere. 18 to be exact. 10 of those were fives or better I have never seen so many mashers. There were people on every corner. I saw 2 elk alive. The best elk I saw was a 7 pt on one side and it was busted off above the third pt on the other side. Killed by a boy about twelve years old.

I agree 100% about the extra tags. However, it isn't just the modern guys, they give tags to master hunters and muzzy as well. Last year 515 total elk where harvested. The year before 525 total elk where harvested. The extra tags have taken a toll on the heard population, no doubt about it. A unit cannot sustain that much harvest year after year and not show the effect of it.

My bad I shouldn't have singled out mf guys. You said exactly what I meant
-
Ditto....the area will never be what it used to be...

There were 3 bulls taken out of that hole over the weekend.
-
My little cousin killed her bull at about 1230 on opening day. We spent the rest of the day trying to get it back to the truck. It was the most difficult pack out of a hell hole ive ever been a part of. We had the bull down at 1230 and got him out at 630. Little 4 point with hoof rot, but it was a great experience. I was able to film the kill and will have a video made by next week for you guys to see
-
Hoof rot, hoof rot , hoof rot? sound like this could be as big of an issue as cats and wolves?
-

this is much bigger then wolves an cats...at least wolves an cats get full eventually..
i think this is why wa is wanting to kill off its elk herd...so it can rebuild a new one with out any hoof rot :twocents:
-
My bussy killed a cow in the winston last year and due the the hoof rot the bones were greenish in color and the meet was garbage. :bash:
-
Bussy...WTF... Buddy

Gotcha, I have never heard it called 19 mile. I seen 3 bulls that got pulled out of the timber right along the river heading up the 1901 between Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. I seen a couple of other gut piles low when hunting in that area Monday, but I would have never guessed 18 bulls came out of there opening weekend.
-
My brother shot a 6x6 at first light on opener up the 1900 area.

Not that wierd if you think about the hundreds of cow permits given out every year. I've only hunted there for about 6 years and have seen a sharp decline in that short time.
thats weird...esp since archery didnt do so well

I came home from hunting up there since last Monday... I was never on the 19 mile road system this year or anywhere near kid valley and I counted a total of 34 gut piles that I could see just by the side of the roads. That is not the ones that I counted in the clear cuts and a few that I found yesterday. I camped at camp 9 and they had 2 nice 6x6 bulls and a 4x4 taken from just that camp. 1109 and 1113 roads were really good this year. I talked to a couple of hunters up there Saturday and they got 2 bulls running together on the 1109 said there guy piles were on the main road there. Well we found them yesterday and right next to it was a 3rd gut pile. Well today we drove by there on the morning hunt to hunt on the other side of that cut. At 8am there was a 4th gut pile and at 9am someone took a cow out of that same hole. Also while glassing the clear cut I believe there was a gutpile down below as there were alot of crows and a young bald eagle eating on something down there. The funniest thing I seen today (Monday) was a Racoon someone killed and hung over a sign and put a coors light can in its paw. Sad but funny as hell!
-
My hunting partner and I spent four days there last week and only saw one Bull (a spike) in the brush along with a couple cows. Several in camps and back of trucks. Biggest teaching point for me was to learn the roads better. After busting my way to a spot I thought was somewhat isolated I found a couple guys over a nice 5 point at the top of the cut.
Walked over and just had to know how the hell did you get here? Response as they both pointed the road is right there at the top of the cut...well sheet :bash: if I had known that....guess better luck next time, but I did get to watch a cool Owl catch a rodent less than 10 feet in front of me while in the brush
-
It's almost like there was no archery season in there this year....... Go figure. :P
You can imagine what it's like during the rut.
-
:yeah:
Usually closed for fire danger
-
I heard that Archery was only open for 1 day up there... My dads boss goes there every year and they had to leave cause DNR and Weyco shut the land down to hunting for the fire danger. So that is why there were so many bulls taken out this year.
-
My first elk hunt was last weekend in the Winston Unit. Great country but so many roads and people.
We hiked for what seemed like hours only to run into more hunters.
We saw no elk. I'm assuming due to lack of experience in that unit and so many other hunters moving the elk.
Sounds like we went up to high and others had more luck down low.
Better luck next year! I was looking forward to elk in my freezer.
-
I live on the opposite side of the hill (north) from Winston Creek on the Mossyrock side and there are lots of hunters around the unit. Other than just plain luck, once you are past the first couple days of the season, you have to look to smaller clearings and pockets of timber where elk are likely to hide out and sleep. There is plenty of sign & tracks, just a matter of being there when the elk are.
I'm still looking too.

Not true. They got at least 4 days this year.
Port Blakely was shut down before and during the season. Weyco shut down during the season and DNR did not shut down.
-
DNR land was open all season. We hunted the land up there, but not with much success
-
Ok I'm sorry!! When I was up there we were talking with a DNR guy who was checking Discover Passes and he said that it was shut down. I was just going by his word.
