Title: Finding a good coyote bullet.
Post by: aer212 on November 04, 2012, 09:34:01 AM
I need some help finding a good coyote bullet. I have a 18 inch, 1 in 7 twist barrel on my ar. What do you guys look for? Violent expansion like a vmax or controlled expansion(mushroom)? I'm looking for something in the 65-70gr range and came across this one from sierra http://www.midwayusa.com/product/199027/sierra-gameking-bullets-22-caliber-224-diameter-65-grain-spitzer-boat-tail-box-of-100 (http://www.midwayusa.com/product/199027/sierra-gameking-bullets-22-caliber-224-diameter-65-grain-spitzer-boat-tail-box-of-100).

Depends on whether you want maximum destruction or do you want to save the pelts?

I though I put that in there, that I was saving pelts. Went back and read it and see that I didn't :bash: So yes, I would like to save pelts.

There is really no perfect bullet for saving pelts IMO.  It is all in where you hit them.  I have shot coyotes with just about every size of bullet and gun and have blown holes and made dime size exits with them all.  I have blown bigger holes with my 223 than i have with my 270 so that is why i decided that accuracy is more important and will deal with the hole once it on the ground.  The best scenario would be shooting all your coyotes with a shotgun but that wont happen

there is no perfect bullet, no perfect range, angle, size of yote, or situation, velocity or cartridge.

I have had good luck with the 50 or 55 gr vmax from the .223 but the same size bullet from a 22-250 makes 4 inch or larger holes. With that said, I emailed a bunch of bullet companies and Sierra said the 65gr SBT would be a good one for me. He said to keep them at 2800 fps and they should do good on fur. Anyway I have a box of 60gr vmax on the way as well as the 65gr SBT.

The TRICK to a fur friendly bullet is as stated , slow them down , Nothing over 3200 fps , 3000 or less even better . stay away from vmax , I use a speer # 1035 H.P. for the last 12 years or so , Its the best i have found .

Whats up CARL  !!!!!!  :yike:

The secret to a perfect Coyote bullet is a 17 cal something.  I happen to perfer a 17 Remington, but there are a lot of others just as good.  Larry

Try a .20 cal. like a .204 Ruger with a 32 grain bullet.  40 grainers are more destructive if you don't care about hides.  Usually no exit hole wit the 32s.

Good choice, FMJs might be a little easier on the pelts.

Carl , Proper bullet is a 17 HMR ,Call sequence, One lone howl @ 200 decibles , for .3 seconds followed with a pup distress on a diaphram turned backward to sound like a goose fart . You should be facing 45 degrees to the up wind side ( but only if the wind is .0007 MPH or less) .If not just go home . I prefer goat , BUT it must be a male goat and the sound would be a male goat pissing on its head .
No need to thank me , I would help YOU out any day .
