Can shoot skunk and porcupine? I can not find anywhere the regs that shows a season on either one.
-
I believe they are in the varmit catagory like coyotes. :twocents:
-
No closed season on porkys. Skunks might be in the trapping regs, but I don't know for sure. If you shoot a Skunk, make sure you shoot it in the head. If it sprays, it will stink for months....
-
Ur good to go on porky's for sure. My boy tried out his 20 g. buck shot on one about a month ago, worked great. ;)

WRONG!
It has to do with the autonomic nervous system. If you shoot it in the head you have a MUCH HIGHER chance of it letting loose with the juice. Shoot it in the heart. Most of the time they won't spray.
-
Not sure if the fishing trip story of hell is remembered on here, but no skunk sprayed after I shot them. All heart shots, or really close.
-
Ive shot a few skunks that didnt spray... Broadside at 5 yards with a 12ga :chuckle:
-
Every skunk I've shot in the head sprayed... That would be 3... Took 3 as well with heart, lung, spine, or a combination.... They didn't spray.... No more head shots for me.... :chuckle:
-
Not sure what the ticket is. Saw one along the Malaga-Alcoa highway hit by a car--no skunk smell. Shot one with a 12 gage years ago--stunk up the area for months! :dunno:
-
Why shoot them unless they're causing trouble?

Why shoot them unless they're causing trouble?
Thats actually how I feel. Skunks do alot of good. I have had to deal with a couple egg eaters with my birds but other than that.

Pretty much the same here.... I've only shot two in the woods just because they got way to close.... If you know what I mean....

I've shot many Skunks just about any place you can shoot a skunk.
I had good luck once shooting it right in the 'ol brown eye, with a 12g. I thought I was onto something so I started shooting skunks in the butt-hole.
needless to say it doesn't work so well either.
A trap designed for skunks is the only way to go, and for you feel gooders you can relocate. Just don't put them near me I'll kill every one of them, just like a mosquito.

FYI: It's against the law to relocate wildlife.
-
Fun to videotape though, especially skunks
-
if you do get any id gladly take a skunk hide and deal with skinning it myself, same with a porcupine.
-
I killed a porcupine last week. They kill trees.
-
Why shoot porcupines? Just for kicks?
-
They kill trees.
-
Don't loggers kill trees? Or beavers? So what? it's nature.
-
I bet you would feel different if you were the one that owned those tree's.
-
I dunno. Guess it depends on the tree. Hell I may keep em around. I'd just feel pretty low blasting some critter from a few yards away with a 12 bore. Thats just me.
-
Ok, let me rephrase this. My family is in the fir tree business we don't like it when they kill our trees. No different then a coyote that kills chickens or sheep. You KILL them.
-
I'm with Grundy on this.... We use to lose a bunch of trees in the orchards and Christmas tree farms I worked on..... It was shoot on site no matter what...
-

to save trees, salt licks, pets, and to make money off their guard hairs. If most people knew how much money you can make with porcupine hair...
Porkies can be a real problem. Like when you have to pick them out of a baler :bash:
-
Can you eat them and/or sell/use the hides? Are they damaging your property? If you can answer yes to either or both questions I don't see any problem with killing them. :twocents:

Private property protection I can see, but just out in the woods, no, I cannot.
-
shoot why do you think they are under unclassified..most of the time they are a pest.

Years ago, a friend, who is now deceased, told me that when he graduated from high school he and some buddies got in a 1936 Ford and drove to Yellowstone Park to camp. When they woke up the next morning, they found that a Porcupine had eaten all the rubber off the running boards on the car. :chuckle:
