Just completed the second wounded warriors elk camp that I have hosted.
We got one raghorn in camp this year, but I got the guys on animals on all but 2 of the days out.
The one pic below of the 2 young Marines with the great big grins says it all.
I could care less if I ever shoot another elk as long as these young men have a good time and get to experience the joy of elk camp.
Semper fi.

Your the man !!!!
-
:salute: Awesome job man, very cool.
-
That is great. More pics! If you ever need donations of beer or other essentials for camp please post it up....I'd be happy to donate when able.
-
This is the best post of the season it just is wonderful that you did this they sure deserve some fun.
-
Much respect, sir!
-
My only complaint is about WDFW. I have tried to get help from them with tags and access for these purple heart/disabled vets and have gotten squat.
Started thinking about moving my camp to Montana for the guys instead. Though I love to be on Mt. St. Helens.
Ah well, such is life.
A good time was had by all. ;)

More pics -
The mountain.
My daughter on her first elk hunt
Marines being typical Marines while at a resting point while humping the 5500. ;)
-
I agree with Buckhorn, best post of the season. That is really cool! Nice job!

I'm shocked.....................................................Not. Thats :bs: on the part of WDFW
Very cool what your doing

7 men in camp this year. My daughter came to camp midway through the season.
Among the 7 - 4 Marine grunts, 1 Marine tanker, 1 Army reservist grunt, 1 Army Command Sgt. Major.
Pic below - watched this bull for about 10 minutes on the morning of the 12th. He gave my daughter and I a beautiful broadside shot at about 75 yards. Unfortunately, he was on the wrong side of the 7400 rd and in the Toutle unit.
-
Great view of Mt. Rainier from on top of the switchbacks above the 5500. :)
-
 Great work.
to bad wdfw isnt helping them out...
-
Great work sir!!!

Thank you for the offer, but not sure if this will continue after this year.
We will see what happens with the charity organization (WWIA) I am working with as far as funding goes for this seasons camp.
-
Awesome!
-
Wasn't there a version of this several years back as well?
-
Thats a great thing you are doing.
-
Ooo-rah Cpl! that's awesome what you've done for fellow brothers and yes, the Army grunts to :chuckle: the pictures of the hard chargers is classic, I can almost assume what the discussion is about in my head now. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: congrats and awesome job Devil Dog, Semper Fi!
-
If you need help with more funding, my wife has lobbied in DC for the Wounded Warrior Project and knows a couple people in that organization that might be able to help. PM me if you think she can do anything
It's awesome of you to take the initiative to set something like this up!

Thank you, I will keep that in mind for the future if need be. Gonna see how things pan out with the current group I am working with. Things have been a bit sketchy lately, so will see when I submit receipts
I've got no problem financially absorbing the cost of 1 or 2 bodies myself, but the WWIA wanted me to expand that amount this year to 5 or more and they would cover the cost of supplies and fuel.
Checks in the mail ;) Ha. :P
Hell, I'm just happy that the guys thoroughly enjoyed themselves and got a bit of that healing only the woods can bring.
-
Very cool!
Likewise, if there is a need for some support next year, please save my info and shoot me a PM.. I love to hear about stuff like this and would be happy to be able to help.
Best regards!!
Brian

Thank you. :)

I would happily donate to the cause as well nice job Corporal I hope this camp can continue in the future. Semper Fi.

 looks like everyone enjoyed themselves

That's a good program you have going. Glad to see local.people involved. The wdfw sure does want the elk heard brought down in numbers but just can't ever think of the right way to do it.... just figure they could throw in some mudflow tags or toutle... :dunno:

Hell, I was trying to get some cow tags anywhere and still nothing.
WDFW isn't very helpful unless alot of money is thrown on the table it seems.
-
this is great and i know a few people in fundraising who have raised money for wounded warrior projects holler if you need more connections I can get you in contact with them.
-
Thats awesome man....
I wish I would have known... I have extensive knowledge of the area, and have killed several bulls down that way.
I'd have gladly put in some miles for a Wounded Warrior....
I work with a bunch of Purple Heart recipients.... A chance to be normal.... Its all they want....
Great job man....

Excellent story and hunt!! I can also say I love your choice in Brew!! Henry's!

Gosha damn that's nice. Beautiful country as well.   :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :hello:

If you need any help next year, let me know. I could come in and be camp cook for a few days or whatever.

This isn't always true. I help run the local chapter of heroes on the water (we take vets and disabled active duty members fishing from kayaks). We had no problem getting a group license that covers crabbing and fishing for all of our participants. Obviously a different section of WDFW, but you get my point, there are some good apples in the bunch.
-
So funding for camp was pretty much all on me for last year. Had to use a good portion of my tax return to repay monies I borrowed for the logistics of camp last year.
With that in mind, I'm not doing a wounded warriors hunt with the charity and bringing in new guys this year.
Instead, I have invited the guys that were at camp last year back as members for this year where we would all split the bills.
All but one or two are returning, which I am really happy about seeing as they only got the first 4 days of the season last year. (Another snafu with the charity on booking flights last year).
New thread and pics in about 6 months. Hopefully we will draw a group tag this year. ;)
-
What your doing is awesome  Good luck with your draws ;)
-
Well, none of us drew anything ....... again.
Camp will be good to go regardless of any frickin special tags. ;)
-
5 days till I leave to set up camp. Most of the members will be flying in/showing up on Halloween.
Here's to hoping everything goes well and involved have a good time. ;)
-
Headin out tonight to set up camp. Will post pics and sitrep upon my return in about 3 1/2 weeks. ;) Hopefully the pics will be a bit bloody.
-
Best of luck to all the well deserving veterans!
-
I had lost track of this thread.... How did you guys do? :dunno:
-
Tag soup for all this year.
We were into the elk all but 2 days of the season. Just nothing to pull the trigger on or to quick of an encounter in the heavy jacks to be able to.
Caught some more wolf tracks this year - tough competing with them

My father passed about a month before the season last year so didn't do the camp last year.
This year we are moving camp. My son, daughter and I drew Margaret cow tags so heading down on my bike this weekend to check on spots to set up camp along Spirit lake hwy.
Any suggestions?
Have 3 Jarheads coming in from out of state, 1 Army dog and 1 squid from here.
Can't wait for the season. ;)
-
Sorry about your father. Good on you for taking this forward!!!!! If you need any donation or hand me down gear. shoot me a pm> I'd love to start something like this myself. Do you mind sharing how you started?
-
In the past with that tag, we've stayed at Seaquest state park although it's a little ways from where you will be hunting. I know people camp in kid valley too which is closer. At seaquest they didn't have a problem with us hanging elk as long as it was covered, and it's nice to have a shower. good luck to you all in the upcoming season! Sorry about your dad, been through that and it sucks.

Swung in there yesterday and talked to the ranger on duty. It's a possibility. Wanted to check out Eco Park, it is much closer to the upper access gates, but the gate was locked and it looked all but abandoned.
-
St Helen's tree farm is closed due to fire danger. I don't think there will be many people camping like last year.
-
Fire danger should be low by November's season. Hopefully anyway. ;)
-
I used to stay at Eco Park all the time. Guys name was Mark that owned it. Great guy! I think I stayed there for three hunting seasons. I went back this last year and all was closed and locked up. I tried calling and got nothing. I tried emailing through there website and again, nothing. I emailed Marks personal email and nothing! I never found out what happened up there! Kinda bummed it was a cool place to stay. I had a yurt the first year and a little cabin the last two seasons I was there.
-
Awesome! If they ever need a guy to help them in Little Naches it would be my pleasure to help!!!
Outstanding job!!!!
-
Finally got a reply from Eco Park. Was told they are not taking hunters this year.
I am starting to think of staying in our normal area and doing some day trips into the Margaret. Oh well.
On another note. Finally had to swallow my pride and ask for help.
I have started a gofundme . My neighbor's son posted it here on the charity thread I think.

I have family in Lewistown, MT. So I got an "in" on some good area. I have also kicked the idea of Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming, etc. around. It all depends upon the logistical costs.

Just had a funny encounter I was reading this thread on my break & shortly after replying a guy on the hangar floor who I pass probly every other night asked if I served I reply and state the branch and he reaches out with a firm handshake & tells me thank-you! Quite coincidental if you ask me. But I hope you are able to keep this great camp going

Coincidences usually aren't. ;)

Screenshot from my gofundme this morning. Not too bad for a week.

Pretty much decided on setting camp up in my normal area near the Kalama Headwaters.
Gonna be a bunch of driving to get myself and kiddos into the Margaret, but oh well. ;)

A bunch of two hours one way worth of driving. Seems as though there are some campsites around silver lake that would be quite a bit closer.
-
Cowlitz County's new Harry Gardner Park on the South Toutle River is pretty much empty right now. Kid Valley might have a spot, also.

None of the other Vets coming from out of state have cow tags for the Margaret. The 2 that are returning/have been to camp before are familiar with the headwaters area.
My son and daughter are only at camp for the weekends. Both are in high school and can't miss a bunch of classes.
I figure the Margaret is going to be a pumpkin patch anyway, so will just take my kids on some day trips into there.
