Title: New Rifle - Input please
Post by: MtgHunter on November 14, 2012, 03:18:46 PM
I'm going to buy a new rifle/scope combo.  Thinking .300 Win mag.  Does anyone know a custom rifle builder here in Washington?  I'd like to be able to drive to them and shoot whatever I end up having built.  I know about Gunwerks, Cooper firearms etc, but not feasible to drive there.

Any input is appreciated.

Call Benchmark barrels, they have built my last two customs and my brothers. Great barrels, excellent service and quick turn around time compared to most others. They are located in Arlington, they have been around forever but are just getting their web site going.

Quarter Minute Magnums is located in Lewiston, ID.  Not a short drive but doable.  My buddy just had them build a .300 win mag for him.  It turned out awesome.

Rbros rifles is the premier rifle builder in the Pacific north west.  I have several of their rifles and have shot several more of their builds.
They do a tremendous amount for the shooting community as well.

He is also a site sponsor and his banner/link is at the top of this page.

You know it! :) Their .338 barrels are incredible, once mine settled in. 70 rounds or so, it is SPOOKY accurate. I'm going to have them chamber up my 6.5-.338 Ultra Mag Improved next.

You need to hurry up with that before I build a 6.5/375 Ruger! I just want to see what sort of velocities you get so that I know what I need to do to beat them. :chuckle: But I'll do it from a pistol! :IBCOOL:

RBros does excellent work and is great to deal with.  It may be a little further but Shawn Carlock W/Defensive Edge builds and excellent rifle as well and has the fastest turn around time of anyone I have ever used.  Last build was less than 3 1/2 months.  They are located just across the Wa. border in Rathdrum Id.

Either choice would build you and excellent rifle!!!

How far was the deer? :)

12ft on the first shot, swung on him moving. All I could see was his head and only hair in the scope. Swung on him like with a shotgun, looking over the top of the scope and pulled the trigger. Cut him with the bullet right over his right brow. Next shot was a 379 yards on the move. Dead right there! Any other questions? Still peddling PMR' for close to 1K?   :chuckle:

What do you want it to weigh, and stocked how? Those questions may dictate who you see for a build.

Lol!, Yeah, only a deer.... ;) lucky he didnt drop into a draw or worse yet, dissappear to never be found again >:( But everyone has a opinion on what a good shot is and one that should be passed up. Gladd it worked for you hammer and he wasnt left to suffer :) To many animals die a slow death every year due to sloppy shooting. I like to practice all summer on steel   :chuckle: so I dont miss those shot, especially the close ones! ;) ;) :chuckle:

Mountainman, very nice rifle.  I am curious as to the barrel wrap?  Specific function or just cool aesthetics?

Two-fold. Weight reduction is a definate plus. More importantly, heat transfer. With the graphite the barrel will cool much quicker and not retain the heat which can cause groups to wander a bit. And it adds stiffness, rigidity to the barrel without the added weight of a heavier contour. :)

Check around and talk with different builders.  Make sure you tell them exactly what you want.  Look at the finished details and track records.  The important thing is for the rifle to turn out how you want it.

It's pretty cookie cutter. A trued up 700, ground lug, tac knob, sitting in a random stock I had....I think its an hs, but i can't recall. Bdl bottom metal trigger at 2#, graphite cerakote on all metal, a green mountain 6.5X8 profiled by me (never again). A zeiss diavari 6-24x56 in seekins rings.

I am running 46.5gr with lapua 139's with ease. My original reamer design broke before I had a chance to cut a chamber, so my replacement has less free bore.....but will feed in a sa without a wyatts.

Claude at the shooters shop built my rifle and broke it in . took 90 + rounds to breakin and get grouping . I'm shooting 140 vlds with 52.5 of rl19 . 1 in 8 twist #4 hart with a break . 6.5 s are really addicting my only remorse is the wieght of my build shoulda maybe kept it under 10 lbs .

Could always build your own, or at least do some of the work yourself. I find it enjoyable to do as much of the work as I can.  :dunno:

But that being said, I have no money(I'm a Pastor with two kids in college), RBros rifles look pretty sweet though.

Even factoring in the cost of a lathe, mill, associated tooling, shop space, paint booth, and guns and on and on...??
doubt you can 'build your own rifle with out a machine shop.

I'd have to say that all in all the biggest cost of the build for me was all the goodies . I thaught that the labor involved with my build was low compaired to the time they spent and range time breaking it in. I allowed my builder to sell me my parts with the exception to the stock . I understand that making a few bucks on parts is all part of buisness and fell that if you let who ever is doing the work sell you parts there overall vibe is better and he relationship turns out better .

I have talked to him, he seems like a good guy and obviously puts out some nice work. I have never heard anything bad about them. Talked to one of them on the phone a couple months back when I was looking for someone to instal a muzzlebreak. He explained they no longer do any work other than building guns, apologized for their site not being updated to reflect that and I was on my way. If I ever find that kind of money in my couch cushions I would have them build me a rifle  :twocents:

There are a few guys that have ill feelings towards me because they don't like others I am associated with.  Honestly, I have never met Biggerhammer (Landon).  He called me about work and my lead-times didn't work out with his time frame.  Not sure about the other guys, have a idea and have fixed some of their work.

Unfortunately, full builds are all I have time for anymore.   Occasionally I can squeeze in a muzzle brake install or bedding, but for the most part, full builds and rebarrels take up the time.  Eventually, I will get back to being able to do small jobs, but not for a little while.  Will be some cool stuff coming out in 2013.  I appreciate the input and am glad you guys like the rifles.

I don't understand why when R Bros gets brought up in most threads in turns into bickering... can someone enlighten me? I have talked to him, he seems like a good guy and obviously puts out some nice work. Just don't really understand all the trash talk when his name gets brought up, I do see most of it is only caused by about three individuals.
:yeah:

I've seen these guys called RBros shoot this year. I have a couple pictures of them too. I think they should give me a rifle for doing that. I'd love to have a RBros gun, but I can't even afford a muzzlebrake.  :chuckle:

They know how to build them AND shoot them!

I've seen them in real life action this year.

As you'll see most r-bros shooters don't do much killin, with the exception of does and dink bucks. Lots of great builders out there for a lot less $.

Looks like Rbros just put that one to rest, hows that foot taste?

To true. shreek must be buddies with mordecai.

 :chuckle:!!!!!!!!!

Has been kinda nice and quiet since Mordecai disappeared :dunno: :)
