Title: AR trigger talk
Post by: KFhunter on November 14, 2012, 04:28:51 PM
My trigger is nasty, funny thing is I hear the Sig Sauer M400 has a nice trigger for a mil-spec AR  :dunno:

this thing feels like its got sand in it, gritty nasty thing.

Will it clean up?

I took the upper off and pushed the hammer back and clicked the trigger a good 100 times today and caught the hammer and pushed it back over and over, it might be a tad smoother but not much.

I know your all going to tell me to get a giessel or something aftermarket, but I wanna know if this one will clean up or if I can polish it first.

My buddy can fix it for you Chris. You'll be impressed.

If I remember correctly there was a pinned post over on AR15.com awhile back on how to polish up the factory trigggers. Be careful about taking too much off and removing the hardened surface. I've tried it and ended up with a aftermarket as I still wasn't satisfied. Changing the springs also helps

I have used a fine knife sharpening stone to polish the faces on the trigger.  I can't really get into the hammer notch, but polishing the trigger helps.  Then, I take a dremel with a cotton buffing pad and some Flitz paste polish to get it close to a mirror shine, then try to get the hammer notch too.  This can reduce the grittiness significantly, but won't effect the length of the pull.  I want to do that trick using a set screw to reduce the trigger's travel, but I can't find a 1/4-28 set screw.  :bash:  Sure, every hardware store has 1/4-20, but not 1/4-28...  For this same reason I haven't done the mod using a set screw to retain the rear receiver pin detent and spring...

You do have to be careful when removing material from a trigger or hammer, especially mil-spec.  These are usually case hardened and if you remove enough material to expose the soft metal beneath, you have ruined the trigger.
