My Buddy, his wife and her dad all drew wy tags this year so I got to go up and hunt it with them. The area is not to active in the mornings during the late season so we dont hunt it to hard until evening and then we hike the ridges glassing the open pockets in the timber. However this year being warmer than past years Opening Morning a group of bulls fed along the ridge across the canyon from the cabin and My buddys father in law made a dream of 30 years come true! "He told me he would shoot a cow if he could do it from the porch of his Cabin" Who would of guessed opening Morning a 370" bull would be standing across the canyon! still in his long johns he dialed his Huskemaw into 650 yds on his 6.5x284 rested it on the picnic table and high shouldered the bull! That evening was un productive we seen a couple smaller bulls but nothing worthy of the tag. Next Day my fiance showed up and we all went out to a different spot we hiked up to a ridge we call "Elk ridge" and just got to the glassing spot when I spotted 2 bulls bedded in the timber about 700 yds off, then my buddy spotted 3 bulls down the valley and it went like that until about an hour before dark when all hell broke loose we had bulls coming in on all sides 48 bulls within range of us we spotted a really nice 340" bull and we were setting my buddies wife up on him when my fiance said some more bulls just came out below us I looked them over and there was one bull that stood out he had a split G5 I told here he was probably mid 330"s but had cool character so she wanted to try him and he was only 280 yds so we set her up on him she rested on a rock pile she built when she was a Kid sitting up there with here dad waiting on elk she made a perfect shot with her 6.5x284 he fell in his tracks and was done! When we walked up to him I almost choked I have never mis judged a bull that bad! He was a solid 350" but his body was HUGE the biggest bodied bull i have ever walked up to.! the next couple days we seen 500+ head of cows and smaller bulls but nothing that really stood out then the fourth morning as we were doing our ritual glassing of the typical spots BINGO I spotted the big bull we have been looking for he was 2 miles up the head of the canyon and I could tell he was a true beast. I watched him work his way up into the area he was going to bed then it was time to make a game plan. We headed up the trail to the ridge across from were he bedded. We were early so we waited him out about an hour before dark he showed up 400 yds up the ridge from were he went in, putting him out of range but he came right to the tree line and bedded down, so we decided we could work our way up the ridge to were we would be straight across giving us a shot within range it was getting dark fast so if we were going to go we needed to go then another 6x7 walked out below us @ 400 yds a great bull probably 360" but he was a baby compared to what we were looking at in the trees above him then he bedded down right behind a group of trees. Talk about anxiety having to bulls both 6x7 and both tanks bedded behind trees and you have about 45 minutes of light left I was going stir crazy then The big boy got up walked back into the trees and out of sight we all sat there in dis belief and then my buddy says damn guess We will wait this one out in the bottom and get him. about 15 min before shooting light was up I looked across than canyon and couldn't believe my eyes, There he is I whispered the big bull just came out and was feeding in a meadow across from us @ 782 yds I couldn't believe it I ranged him, My buddy dialed his Nightforce G7 in on his 338 edge I got him in my spotter I watched anxiously as i expected the bull to drop "my buddy just don't miss he is a shooter I have watched him drop a doe antelope @ 1376 yds and 2 deer passed 1k " BOOM and I could barely get the words out after watching the vapor trail go right over the bulls back!! Im talking centimeters over his back!! High i call out he is caught off gaurd he expexted a hit too he chambers another "CHIT he says my guns jammed then he gets it freed and another chambered" you were 1/2 min high from kill zone he is starting to panic the bull is still standing there looking around my buddy zeros in and is just about to shoot and the bull starts walking Damn he will stop he says im calling out ranges he gets to 800 and then walks into a draw and stays in there until after dark we could see his antlers and back the whole time until it was to dark to shoot we backed out and came back in the morning we bumped him and stayed with him for 2 more days then the snow storm came in it snowed for 3 days and we never found him again! The last evening we had to hunt we were Hiking up elk ridge and I caught a flash of yellow in the trees across the canyon I could tell it was a bull so got my spotter out and sure enough there was two bulls bedded in the timber. It was -17 and the wind was gusts to 20 mph it was not the most enjoyable evening I have ever had lol They got up and starting feeding into a meadow about 2 hours before dark I could see that the one bull had a broken main and the other was a solid 340 bull with a beautiful frame long tines and rounded mains a really pretty bull. They walked out @ 656 yds my buddy dialed i checked the wind meter we had a 9 mph cross wind he held 2.5 min of wind I told him that the bigger bull was the bull above I had both in the spotter he shot and I watched the lower bull fall out of view!! DUDE YOU SHOT THE WRONG BULL I yelled he looks up and just chuckled damn I did!! Then shakes his head "This just aint my year I guess" lmfao I laughed and said well damn you made a perfect shot on the wrong bull lol

Distance of the shot had nothing to do with shooting the wrong bull! Its a mistake that anyone could have made especially when you know that if you look at head and horn rather than focusing on vitals and making a clean kill shot you will loose your nerves and make a bad shot.
Every year I hear story's of someone shooting the wrong buck or bull you think that would never happen to me until it does and you realize its not that hard to do! :twocents:
Thanks Everyone It was a great year all the way around for my friends and family we were fortunate enough to draw a pile of quality tags and took some true trophy's this year
