Title: Alta late muzzleloader
Post by: ss91 on November 19, 2012, 06:21:45 PM
I drew the late Alta tag and have not been able to get away from work and family.  I am hoping to get up there Saturday and maybe Friday to do some scouting.  My question is should I concentrate more up by Twisp are further down the valley towards Alta Lake?  Thanks for any help.

gold creek to twisp would be your best bet. you will find a higher concentration of deer closer to town. Good luck.  Don't be to picky. you will have tag soup if you are.

Gold Cr and Libby creek drainages. Hunt up the different canyons. Don't listen to those that say the deer are all down low.

I was over there for all of early muzzy deer.  There are deer everywhere.  We seen alot of deer in the alta but we hunted the gardener.  Good luck you should have a good hunt.

Just got back from helping someone with the late modern permit.  Hunted both the Gold Creek and Libby Creek areas, from high to low.  My advice is to concentrate on the Libby Creek portion.  Gold Creek was nearly sterile.  Wasn't until Saturday evening at dinner at Antler's that we heard why.  Another late tag holder and his son had been up the south fork Gold Creek road hunting and came upon a trail where deer had been being followed by 4 wolves.
Last word from WDFW was there was only two wolves in the Lookout pack.  What crap.

Good Luck!

I actually didnt take any photos of it.  I was hunting by myself and didn't think about it.  He wasn't that nice.  I did see one nice buck just couldn't get in a position to get a shot.  I was suprised at the lack of quality bucks I saw either I was in the wrong area or they weren't there.  I would be interested to hear how others did the only other buck I heard of being taken was a small 3x4.

I helped a friend on the late modern hunt. We were primarily in the Libby Creek drainage. The night after I left he heard wolves howling behind his camp. He ended up shooting a spike on his last day. He was told by a bio from the area that the wolves had mooved on. Wrong!

I had the tag two years ago and covered a lot of ground saw a lot of decent bucks.  I saw one absolute pig sat on him all day because I couldn't close the distance. At last light he fed towards me and I got a shot and the cap didn't go off.  Got another cap on took a long shot and missed.  The unit doesn't have the animals that it used to.  Damn wolves :bash:
