I'm considering what I'll do if I'm out on a hunt and get a chance to pop one. If it is just me, I'll pop it. If I have one of my kids with me, or my wife, I'll need to give them a reason why it needs to die... It took me some time to get my wife in full support of deer hunting, but this year she embraced it and loved being able to provide the family with meat they loved and was as 'organic' as it comes...
This isn't a trick question and no right or wrong answer. Just wondering if I'll get more responses like "who cares - it is legal and it is just fun to shoot them" to "they are a nuisance and we are helping save fawns, pets, and small game by thinning them out" to "You can do XYZ with the pelt"...

You pretty much covered all the bases on what we will probably respond with.
If your kids are with you, you can use the coyote as a very valuable lesson on how to clean and skin an animal.
Show them how to skin an animal properly and why fur used to be so valuable. You know, like what its uses are?
Then take the skin home and you could always just do a simple dried hide hanging mount.
When they ask what to do with the meat.... well, you could always cook someup for them.... though, they'll probably hate the taste. lol.
You could just say that you miss placed the carcass after skinning it?

I'm not sure what I would do. You pose a very interesting point.
Obviously, as a wildlife lover, I would shoot any coyote I saw.
Their only "natural" predator used to be the Wolf.
But we pretty much got rid of wolves forever ago.
Now it's our responsibility to manage the coyotes to ensure they don't wipe out any other populations of animals... like quail, grouse, or ducks and geese.
I've seen coyotes completly waste out nests in the spring.

If you have any doubts about how vicious and relentless they can be, go to youtube and search for "coyotes killing fawn" for example, but be prepared, because it is nowhere near a Disney production.
They do make challenging trophies when you try calling one, as they are in possession of excellent eyesight, hearing and smell. And some can make very striking mounts and rugs, and can have a somewhat limited value in the fur market, but as has been said, Washington coyotes don't bring premium prices.

I appreciate all the responses. I have no problem letting one lay where I drop it. But would be even better if there was a practical use. I'm in the Snohomish\Monroe area. Any place I could donte one in the area?

so many options. i like the educational aspect the best. teach the kids about the yotes & thier impacts on the environment in which they live, be honest & dont sugar coat it. better than haveing them learn from a different source.

My wife has bear spray (we do see a few each year) and she is pretty good about taking it.
After last weeks attack on a Griffon that the neighbor was out walking I imagine the concern about me whacking a few coyotes is gone. The neighbor was fortunate that it only required a vet visit and some stitches. If she hadn't been close behind the coyote would have had dinner.
Trouble is (IMHO) the neighbors don't aggressively discourage the coyotes from being around and it didn't take the coyotes long to decide there were some easy pickins. I have encouraged a few to stay out of my place and it seems we see one to re-educate every year or so, otherwise they steer clear.

Here is a good example of coyotes living inside city limits and also what littlemac is saying about folks opinions of them. These were set-up on the sidewalks along the Golden Gate Park in the middle of San Fransico....
Griffith Park in California had a serious problem and MacArthur Park as well as I recall from an article in American Hunter awhile back.

well you can get anywere from $15 to $40(perfect fur) for a good coyote! fur prices just arent what they use to be, how someone could pay 2 to 300 dollars for a coyote im not sure...fur buyers are just sellers too, they have to turn around and process it (skinning, stretching tanning etc.) they cant sell em for that much! you can however get into highprices with bobcats, that can be a different story! do some research their are fur buyers in this state, george brady of pateros is where i take my furs, good luck!in north dakota right now you can get 2 to 300 for a put up skin, guys are buying them for as much as 70 dollars in the round

Funny, I just shot my first last week, a big male to boot. Was thinking of doing something with the hide but the damned thing stunk so bad I just pitched it. For me it's getting rid of a nuisance pest, saving deer, turkey's, etc. The farmers around my place love to hear of them dying as well.Skin while it is still warm No stink :tung:

My friends get one day of hunting deer for every coyote he shoots on this ranchers property.
That's funny, I had a rancher near Dayton that said I could try to call the cougar that had been seen around but he didn't want me shooting any coyotes because they helped keep the groundsquirrel populations down. I thought he was a little bonkers, but didn't see any coyotes anyways.
Many science/biology teachers would probably be interested in having a tanned hide donated to their classroom. This might cost a bit of $$ but could be good PR. They might even have some money in budget to help.
