Title: Toutle Cow... How's it Going?
Post by: MuleDeerCrazy on November 22, 2012, 09:19:56 AM
Anybody been filling their Toutle cow tags yet?  Anybody running into any snow... guessing maybe a little way up high?

My 11 year old daughter has a tag and is all over me to get out there, but the wife frowns on going hunting with a house full of her relatives for the weekend... sounded OK to me :chuckle:

Good luck everybody!

We saw one cow killed first thing in the morning yesterday, then later had a 4 point bull at 40 yards broadside.   :bash:

Also saw one elk on the other side of the river, in a clearcut, about a mile away. It was up wandering around for a few minutes, and then laid back down. Too far to tell if it was a bull or a cow.

We're thinking of waiting for the January season.

Oh, and yes, it was snowing down there yesterday, when we got up higher. There was a couple inches on the ground. Truck thermometer said  34 degrees. That was in the afternoon.

I'll be there Dec 1-15 for Archery cow if I don't tag out before then. I'm also curious if anyone's been doing any good down there.

Taking my buddy in tomorrow.  Should be a slam dunk.  I had a bull tag in there in 2009, and took my buddy in last year for his cow hunt.  We've killed three elk now in the same drainage.  I'm going to try and make it four.

How'd it go Silk?  Any suggestions for an 11 year old kid?  I have a couple ideas, but basically need to find spots I can walk her into, spot the elk undisturbed and then get her set up for a shot, with plenty of time.  I don't like road hunting anyway, but it really don't work to kick your little girl out and tell her to shoot at the running elk across the canyon.  There're a few gates on the southern end we're planning on hunting, but always open to new ideas.

Thanks and good luck!

MDC

I was on the South end for the first 7 days of the Bull hunt this year and saw cows/calves nearly every time I looked around Lakeview Peak Lake.  A couple of times I drove to nearly the end of the 7322 road and walked in to the old unit below Lakeview Peak Lake and had cows within 100 yards, once at about 20 yards.  Might be worth a try if your in that area.

if you look up the 6600, around the 6680 i think that is where you will find it... Those are just off the top of my head, but i think they are right. I will look it up and get back to you.

Yep looked it up. 6689, 6680N, that is the top side of lakeview peak.

We were out all day Friday, drove around the entire unit, north, south, east, west. Glassed every cut we saw.  Saw one guy miss/wound a cow early in the AM, that was the only cow we saw all day.  Went up high, down low... It was pouring rain out with strong gusts all day - every rig we ran into was seeing the same thing. I'll be back out there come January, snow will help.

Anyone get any down?

My buddy filled his tag at the end of the 1490 road along the coweeman river I believe. Went in with him to pack it out. The road ends and you can continue on foot. The trail crosses the river to the bottom of a great clear cut. He was able to sneak up on a small heard that he spotted from the road in and get it done. Never saw another hunter back there. It may not be the best option for your daughter but that whole valley is pretty impressive.
