Title: BT 1, Hunter 0... Ego destroyed :)
Post by: Vo2max on November 23, 2012, 08:36:52 PM
Sitting there by the tree this AM I did have one inclining of "why am I here?" As the rain pelted me and soaked the arms of my "waterproof" Stormkloth. I waited for 75minutes before making a slow creap into what I thought would be the thickest woods I could fin. Before leaving my stand I decided to dump off my quiver... Who ever needs two or more shots right? ;)

I made my way throughthe thick alders and cedar thicket moving at a snails pace seeing tons of fresh sign but no deer. i came to the edge of the same clear cut i was sitting on to begin the hunt and i was on the lefet side of a logging rd pegged by a doe for 20min... Wet, cold and shaking due to staying in one position I crouched and waited. She moved into clear cut and all of a sudden a big 'ol 4x4 BT  stood up and started to chase the doe. She moved a bit but the buck started toward me. He came toward me on the opp side of the rd... He got to 30yds (from 100) and I realized I could not move. He got right next to me (thank you ASATcamo as well as scent control/killing spray and soap two bathe) and tried to get my release on the d-loop. He saw me move a bit but still did not spook.i looked over my shoulder at him and he looked at me but he didn't budge nor did I. He then walked into the cut and I spun around and drew... He was walking still and at 40yds by now... I released and the arrow sailed over him!!!! He stopped and I then realized I had left my quiver by the tree where I started earlier that AM :).... Good times. He sauntered off as if just moving on to greener pasteurs as I was left to find my arrow and are sure that he was for sure unscathed which he was.

Ohwell... Such is life. I've either gotta shoot more, distance judge better (couldn't get range finde r out) or quit! I've got the hunt down...just not the kill :)

Sorry for no pics but with this rain I dared not bring any electronics afield.

That 's why they call it hunting!!!!!

Next time.

Man, blacktail hunting will break your heart over and over.. then one day, it all comes together like it should, and you suddenly get it all together.... once that happens, there is no going back...  Unless of course you would rather hunt dry country, instead of wet so you are not shivering and shaking from being soaking wet.

Since I grew up on the east coast of the US and cut my teeth hunting white tails it has take me a few years to figure these things out to be sure! I have yet to connect with a Mule deer or a BT buck...got a doe two seasons ago but this was my first arrow loosed toward a buck. Frustrated to say the least but he did not seem too concerned or spooked so we'll see if he comes back on Sunday when I go back. I'm looking forward to connecting finally tho!

If nothing else, A good lesson. Sounds like a good hunt though. I tend to do more learning than killing while I'm out too. I figure as long as I learned something, It wasa worth going out there.

Good Luck on Sunday!

Bring some estrous scent with you, might bring him in if he's around.

Good luck.

I've been learning for awhile now! I want to connect :)... Son enough, soon enough.

Does the estrous scent have to be from a BT or will whitetail scent work? I'm bringing rattling horns and a grunt tube with me tomorrow and I'd things aren't moving I hope to get them moving toward me I hope.
