Title: Caldwell Bend Rest For Sighting In?
Post by: ACLSRN50 on November 24, 2012, 05:39:34 AM
I am considering purchasing one of these Calwell Bend Rest rigs for sighting in my rifles...

I can't help but wonder how much of a role recoil plays of the muzzle 'kicking up' when the rifle is fired that results in playing a role in making sighting in harder?

Thoughts?

looks like that one is the improved one with the velcro strap to prevent kickups

Yes it does....I always wondered - it is best NOT to try and surpress kick ups (sicne this is what is going to happen during a REAL shot w/o a rest like that when hunting) - or - is it best to try and supress any kick ups at all?

I myself was interested in one but the model I looked at didn't have the strap. The comments were complaining it didn't havethe strap. I guess it is best to have it and not use it if you choose to.

I have used Caldwell "lead sleds" with and with out added weight to the tray, a lot over the past few years and find them to work well. I have not used the ones with the Velcro strap, and frankly don't feel it's necessary. The lead sled absorbs a great deal of the recoil from heavy rifles and makes a day at the range with them lot more enjoyable.

IF you STRAP down the barrel of your rifle when bench shooting,, why even bother free floating or worrying about accuracy????

Now if you are shooting a lever gun or a semi auto that has a barrel band or something similar no issue.  HOWEVER, if you are shooting a bolt gun, and it has been free floated and bedded, and all those things, tying down the front end is a huge error on your part.  IT WILL NEVER SHOOT THE SAME in the woods...   because ummmmmmmmmmmm  you do not have that barrel strapped down......

that sure makes a lot of sense and yes my rifle is the bolt....well at least 1 of them is the my othe one is a muzzleloader without a free floating barrel .

I never used one till this year to sight 3 rifles in. The one I used did not have the velcro and worked great. It really helped a helluva lot.

As for as I could tell from sighting my 3 rifles. The shot went to where I wanted it and my spotter would tell me which way to move the scope. I sighted in my 300wssm, 223 and 6.5 Creedmoor on it.

I have a lead sled we sight all of our rifles in with. Instead of weighting the sled down we took the back adjustment out and put in a half inch bolt. It works great and there is absolutley no kickback or jump.
