This guy crossed my trail camera last night. Never seen a blacktail of this size before. If I do see him while hunting I will probably mess my pants before and after flinging an arrow!
What are your thoughts on a score??? Suggested strategy?? How soon before first light should I be in and sitting?? Or will I even seen this Hog in the daylight?
-
HOG!!!
130+
-
Holy Horn Porn....
I killed a masher about 20 years ago.. he just missed the book... your pictured one makes mine look like he was very malnourished... :yike:
As for Score?? Who cares.. would be a trophy of a lifetime when it comes to blacktails.
-
138- 142...
-
Crap who cares shoot away
-
WOW! he's a show off. I'm guessing 142---145. That thing is a real STUD
-
Score does not determine what I shoot at. Just cannot stop thinking about every aspect of this horny guy!
-
Could go gross boone
-
Could go gross boone
Bullchaser, what does that mean?
-
Boone and crocket 135" minimum
-
135-7/8 +/- 10"
-
128 4/8
-
A 5!! What a beautiful animal!! Good luck getting on him. No clue on score, but honestly, who cares!?!

-
WOW!!! Good luck steadying your aim if he does step in front of you! That is a beast!
-
Get an arrow in him and get a tape on him. My guess is 125 to 135 gross. Great pictures, good luck and hope we see pictures of you holding his horns.
-
Sheesh! What a monster!
-
I come up with about 127. Fairly conservative on my guesses so could go over 130
-
Yep he's still alive, because he likes to move at night. Good luck, hope you get him.
-
130-140 5x4 with eye gaurds! One of the best blacktails I have seen in a long time
-
We may be neighbor's
-
Suggested strategy? How soon before daylight should I be in and sitting??
-
Id be there an hour before and be settled in.if you dont i can..... you dont want that little thing spreading his genes around your spot do you :chuckle:
-
We may be neighbor's
Wow, that sure does look like the same buck. You guys need to get together and discuss strategies!
-
I could be missing it but I don't see the bonus (not for score, who cares) # 5 on the lefty side. I'd put him at 135ish'. Corker for sure.
Strategy, minimum half hour before all the way to half hour after dark....whatever it takes to stay warm and lucid for 10 hours+. I know a lot of experts say an hour morning and evening is enough but dandys like that will surprise you with a mid-day appearance when they've been up all night like your sweet photos confirm. Seen it more than once, for sure. Doesn't stand to reason but I wouldn't leave my blind/ stand for anything all day.

This BT scored 126-7/8........Mr.Ts' future buck blows it away IMO :twocents:

:yeah: I would rather feel like I "over hunted" than "under hunted"
-
Stay all day like said....if its clear at night they will be chasing and feeding all night and bed down early morning...then about 11am-2pm they will get up to feed again..if they stay down that long...i watch one clear cut all day long and deer movement is best first 2 hrs in the morning, middle of the day and the last hr of light
-
Thank you. Have primarily hunted mule deer in the sagebrush, and now learning a new beast. Truly appreciate the advice.
-
Not a problem....i watched a big 2 pt today chase a doe all over at 2 pm today from 40yds and he didnt care i was there...it wouldnt hurt to put out some blacktail doe estruss too...lay a scent trail on your way in and make sure to use cover scent  goodluck and cant wait for the pics
-
Those 2 are both mashers, but I do think they are the same unless I just cant see the 5th on the 2nd buck.
-
Regardless of score that is a huge blacktail.
-
135-7/8 +/- 10"
I agree
Gotta be right in there somewhere.
-
You wouldn't happen to have your cam set up in Oregon or on the fringe of mule/blacktail GMU would you? Because if that's a legit western WA BT.......you sir have your work cut out. 140+
-
hey ,,if you need help I am available :dunno: :chuckle: Look at it this way , if someone does not kill him he could die of natural causes , get eatin by a cougar or poached ... 8) :dunno: ;) :bdid:

I'm with you both on the score. Try dropping napalm on the entire area then look for the burnt antlers!!! I've been hunting my ass off for years looking for a buck like that (blacktail) and they are ghost. I do hope you fill your dream of killing a buck like that, they are ghosts in the darkness. Good luck.
-
I will meet you in the morning and we will head out to hunt him. As you are crapping your pants I will shoot him, I will let you score him after the drying period.
-
That fifth on the left I didn't see originally................so two different deer
-
Is it just me, or is that blue thing in the background of the picture above ^ the same thing that bucks eating apples off of in "Neighbors" picture? you guys must be close neighbors! :dunno:
-
looking at the end of the left main beam id say they are the same buck . my buddy Bob shoot a stud this year in his yard in mv so they are there for sure . Keep the apples comming and add some grains and beans to the mix that boy is gonna want to bulk up after seeing the ladys . I'd be sitting in the stand a couple hours before daylight on that stud . Have different stand on the fringe of his habitat and just because he looks to be a urban buck dont miss play the wind . Good luck thats a 140 class buck no doubt .
-
those are 2 differant blackies and what studs they are, you both got some serious huntn ahead of ya.....my ass wouldnt even be able to sleep with those sniffn around the back yard... good luck fellas
-
Leigh... that buck is an amazing blacky! So is the other of course.
-
To the OP.. That's a stud BT!!! 140+ imo..... And I don't think those are the same bucks.... Look where the 5th extra come off...
-
I agree with those thinking 140+ gross. Think he will lose 6 to 8" in deductions on the net score. I have a 127+ hanging on the wall and this buck makes him look like a dwarf. That's one dang fine blacktail!
-
129 7/8 for sure in the book rifle or archery. I think archery is 90, but I could be wrong. good luck
-
Leighzerr, 145 6/8 gross 136 5/8 net. Not that it matters, beautiful buck.
-
early mornings the only time youll see him
-

130+ You need to be out early in the morning big bucks like that normally go nocturnal and you may only see him the first few minutes of light... If he's rutting hard and chasing does you may get a day time shot. I was dragging out my deer one year with my buddie and saw a monster blacktail on the edge of a clearcut during the rut, so they do occasionally come out during the day. Set the time up on your trail cam and see when he's moving you don't want to miss a chance on a AWESOME buck like that. :twocents: Good luck!

140

Here are a couple recent pics. Have not seen him while in the field or during the daylight on my camera :bash: Over the the last couple weeks all pics have him in the area before 3am. Re-positioning of trail camera has given me a pretty good idea which direction he typically comes from. Putting out a 2nd trail camera tomorrow to try and get more info on his whereabouts (Thank you stormin85). He has appeared twice around 6:15pm, which has given me more hope. I am losing too much sleep thinking about this monster  I will have some consecutive days off before Christmas. Any suggestions???????
-
Your camera is just on a trail, with not bait or scent? If so it could be that he's still in the area at other times, just doesn't happen to go by your camera. Try using some apples for bait, or maybe some doe in heat scent.
-
There are apples by the trail camera. Had a trail camera in this location for a few weeks and it was not until I used apples that I had him on the camera. The apples continue to draw him to the trail camera. Have only been able to get out and dump apples on the weekends.
-
Maybe lay a scent trail with doe estruss down the evening before your going to spend the entire day there....i did that and it kept the buck i was after around in the daylight...made him mess up and keep looking for the doe
This is him

like i said when we were talking last week, because of the layout of his range, your best chance will come from long sits in a blind or tree stand, unfortunately pushing through the brush isn't going to work, its too thick and bringing someone to help a push could ruin it, long sits are going to be the trick, be in early, or potentially sit overnight, with my cam out there hopefully you can pinpoint his travel route and schedule, or at least an idea, and then every possible thing a deer eats goes out there, and cover the surrounding area with doe estrus.
i am working on a third cam for you, then hopefully you can spread them even further apart and get a good idea of what his range is, and hopefully his core to where he beds. then as the season gets close to end, you move closer and closer to his bedding area.
no matter what PLAY THE WIND, he's big because he's smart. hopefully he'll be dead because your smarter.
and remember WHEN you draw back to let the air out don't look at his rack, find a spot on his side and put your pin there, you can look at his rack once we drag it out.
also, even though there are a few other good looking BT's showing up, keep him in mind no matter how many shot opportunities they may offer, you let them walk.
-
unless that buck is chasing doe's you wont see him in the daylight. :bash: even when they are on a doe a buck like that wont move until it's dark sorry man there is still that 1% chace that he will screw up just enough to keep you out there.
-
Find the trail HE usues.. Probably a different one then a main trail the rest of the deer use... It won't be as easy to find but will connect into the main trail when he come into the bait... Then get farther away then you normally do.... Still hunt the wind as quietly as possible and try to find a pinch, ambush point that he will come to early enough for a shot if he's still coming in after dark... Which he will be...
-
I would use all of the tricks in your aresenal on this guy. Try a 3d doe target, scent, and doe bleats. Let us know if you stick him!!!!
-
A buck like that won't be on a main trail for very long. You need to spend time 20-60 yards on the down wind side of the main trail area looking for his travel route. This will be where you kill him I bet. He will move along the down wind side of main trails scent checking. Keeping himself hidden until dark.
