Just wondering how the late archery elk season is treating you guys. Haven't see much activity on here. I was thinking since 328 got cows back there would be some more posts. I'm started a new job so I will Unfortunately will not be hunting this year.

Went up in 328 on wednesday and spent the day hiking in the upper part of cooke canyon and every track I saw was at least 5-7 days old. Talked to another couple of hunters and all they saw were branched bulls. I think it was a bad year to get cows back because of the fire.

Yeah I was wondering if that was going to be a factor.

congrats on the cow! I was down there also. Spent a few days hunting with my dad and we got on some cows and had a few within range but didn't get it done. Did you kill your cow in the reprod, timber or a cut? And what time of day? We saw elk only in the first hour of light and hunted all day.

I shot it in some timber between cuts and it ran out into one of the cuts and died in a slash pile. It was about 7:30am. We saw lots of elk, about 30 cows/ calves. 6 spikes and a raghorn 4pt i could have shot 10 times if it was open for bull.

Nothin for the lil naches nile units for me. Trying to figure where their at is the trick. From what I noticed they are up higher than I expected, once I figured that out my weekend was over. But a few animals hangin, not much.

Use to be bulls only the last week or so and now no bulls at all in the Winston late season :bash: That was one of the hunts I waited all year for. I enjoyed it more than bugling in hunters bulls during early season. Now, I go because of friends and the wife. But it no longer gets me excited for weeks prior like it used to.
Shooting meat is great and the Winston cows are definately good eating. However, once they closed it to bulls I have them within range all the time. Just gets a little too frustrating for me. Myself when the freezer is already full I'd rather eat my tag in Fall River and have a chance at a bull than have nearly a guaranteed cow in the Winston. But my vote doesn't count much these days as the wife and friends truly enjoy the Winston cow shoot.
Congrats on your success buglebuster! Did the cow you shot have any signs of hoof rot?
