Title: Fox Hunting?
Post by: Tyson0317 on November 25, 2012, 07:20:01 PM
Hi Guys,

I wanted to look for information about fox hunting in Washington and I have not found much here or on Google. Only thing I know about fox hunting is what I read about gentleman's hunts in England 200 years ago - guys on horseback, bugle and packs of dogs running around a field.

I assume that modern fox hunting is somewhat different. Where do people go? What is the general course of action? Where can I get more info?

IMHO, you're more likely to see a Bobcat than a Fox in Wa.. and that in itself is no easy feat... I've seen one EVER...

I heard that they can be found in the SE corner of the state. I assumed that people use some sort of decoys/calls. I have seen foxes twice in Ada County, near Boise ID - that's not so far away... Is it really a fool's errant to go after them? Why do they have a season then?

Interesting! I live in Seattle, so Puget Sound is a lot more inticing than SE corner of the state. Can you give me any more detail about where you have seen them? Why are they looking for on the beaches, scavanging low tide? I assume they would be near woodland? Or do they like brush ground like coyotes?

most foxhunting on horses to hounds is done in the southern states where they have a strong tradition and a good population of foxes.  There are no actual foxhunts held in WA that I know of.  Many foxhunts now dont even involve a fox due to animals rights activities, often its just a scented course or a drag that the hounds and riders follow.  I've always wanted to foxhunt, wanted to run stags with deer hounds and horses too and would love to go open field course and falconing ..... WA isn't real hound hunting friendly so pretty limited here with those types of activities.

Well, I have neither horse or hounds (just a good bird dog). That said, I was hoping that people would give me some tips on where to find them and how to lure them in...

Taylor Town, south of Shelton is the only area I know of on the westside that has fox AND you can hunt them.  I saw a few to the NE of Taylor town when I lived out that way back in the early/mid 90's.

Could try calling if you can get permission as it's pretty much all private from what I remember.

I have lived in WA my whole life and never seen a fox on that side ... I know we have a few, but not the populations they do in other places.  I know a few guys on here have killed them on their farms, I am not sure I have read any calling stories more opportunistic, or known den area.

Would also love to know what works for calling might be fun to try.

There is a large population of fox down around Redondo Beach, Des Moines, Tacoma, all around the wooded areas of the Puget Sound area, I used to see them regularly in the wee hours of the morning.  Problem is, you cannot hunt any of that area, much too populated.
