So I'm thinking about buying a coyote light. I have been looking at the XLR 250 which comes in 3 different colors, red, green, blue and then white as well. First of all I'm debating on which color to get, but I hear red and green are the 2 best colors for coyote hunting. So my debate is between getting a green light or a red light. Does anybody have any recommendations on green vs. red? I do know that green is easier to see for the human eye and can be seen further, but is a coyote going to get spooked by a green light? I do know that red is the most common color for coyote hunters, but I am curious if anyone is having better success with a color other than red. I have used white light in the past, but I know that as a general rule white lights will spoke coyotes unless they are really hungry or really curious about the light.
I'm also open to other ideas for lights, the XLR 250 series runs about $140 for 1 color, and $200 for a 3 color combo. Is anybody else out there having success out to 150 to 200yds with anything else on the market that might be cheaper? My goal is to get a decent coyote light for hunting at night and not have to completely break the bank to get it. Any recommendations on something other then an XLR 250? Really it doesnt even need to be scope mountable, but ultimately I would like something that I would be able to mount somehow and not have to hold and shoot.

Check out dealextreme.com they have the identical lights for a lot less.

I have wicked lights bad azz. Rick

I use a cree with a Q5 bulb. Takes (2) 123 batteries. I can visually see whole bodies at 250 yds. and easily see the entire coyote at 150yds through the scope with very fine crosshairs. Can pick up eyes at 4 to 5 hundred yds.
This is with a standard white lens. Length is 6 1/2 inches and very light to carry. Cost is $35.00 at dealextreme and Northern tool and equipment. :twocents:

Lazer Genetics, 'nuff said.
-
I have the Laser Genetics ND3x50 and it might be the coolest thing I have ever seen I can see Coyotes at 500yard. I think I would be comfortable at a 250-300 yard night shot with that light. It is truly amazing. :twocents:

I'd like a hand held FLIR for scanning, and a lazer genetics for kill light.

Nope I just use toe warmers (they are sticky). Saved the money and it works awesome had it out in the teens and it worked great.

I coon hunt alot at night, and have found two things you need in a good light. First, you need a single light bulb, second you need a red lens to cover your light.
Don't buy a spot light with several bulbs, you need a direct light not a flood light. And the red (or green) makes a huge difference as it doesn't spook them as much as a regular light would.
-
Also cr 123's are expensive, not worth it. Most spot lights dont use those, but I wouldn't recommend getting a high end flash light using those batteries to night hunt with

Do you have a link?
I ordered the Ultrafire red and it was brighter than my Olight M20 red led, for about a day before it crapped out.

Saw a predator show and they just used white lights which did not seem to deter the coyotes or bobs. Anyone else just use white? I have a Streamlight flashlight with the high intensity LED (thanks again Grainfedmuley) that puts out an awesome beam for a 2 AA flshlight. It's not a 200 yard light but seems like it would do the job, especially if in a firearm restricted area.

Here is my thoughts. I have spent hundreds of hrs behind a light. Flat out the best light made in lightforce. It will put everything else to shame. Best lights in the world. They make a couple different models that can mount to a gun even though they are a little bulky.
I just picked up a wicked lights kit the other day and so far I am impressed with it. Now mind you, it is not anything like a normal spotlight but it does all that I am looking for. I will run the lightforce and when I spot a critter "if alone" switch to just the wicked light for a shot. I got the white light. It is good to 150-200 on a clear night. The green and red will be a lot less.
I will be picking up 1-2 more depending on how my trials go with this one I just got.
When it comes to red/green white bla bla bla stuff. It really does not matter. I have used them all. If you are running a light in the area when they have been getting pressure, it does not matter what light you hit them with! They are going to run!!!! White light makes for better shooting and you get a lot more range with it. Cats don't like really bright lights in there face. Most of the time they will turn there head away from the lights. Better to use the halo on the outer edge of the light. A red light does work better on cats.

NOTHING beats Light Force!

I can shine them bright as day farther than i can hit them. 5-600 yards plain as day. I have one of these that i use. :twocents:

I have had the 250 Kill Light for two years now and it is AWESOME. Get the red lense, there has been reports the green lights are good for hogs, but have spooked some yotes. I also have a Smart Light headlamp with a red lense pop cover. I scan with the head lamp and have the 250 attached to my gun. The headlamp last 20 hours on high, I can see eye WAY out there. It has no cord, the battery pack is on the back of the helmet. It's awesome. I have hunted with guys with the Light Force, really bright but bulky and cords and heavy compared to the Smart Light and 250. No way I would switch even if it was given to me for free, which they are very spendy. I have $250 tied up in both of my lights. If you want to find a really good headlamp, check out the gear section on the UKC Coonhound site, those guys are in the woods almost every night really putting threi lights to the test.

I have a lightforce but is way too bulky even though it has superior light, A green or red light for scanning and a white for the killshot.Right now i am using the 250 kill light in on my rifle and a green for hand scanning similar to the XR100. I don't do much night calling but this works for me.

I have a Lightforce spotlight that plugs into my vehicle's power. Does a good job. Also have a couple of smaller gun-mounted lights, but I don't do much night hunting even though coyotes are pretty much nocturnal hunters.
