Title: Skagit chapter Pheasants forever?
Post by: Stilly bay on December 01, 2012, 01:06:38 PM: is there one? I know on the website they have it listed but I couldn't find any contact info.

I realize that hunting season probably isnt the best time to get ahold of anyone in pheasants forever, but I have been sending emails to other west side chapter inquiring about skagit and so far no reply.

anyone in the know?

if there isn't one who wants to start one? count me in.

Post by: Cascade_fisher on December 01, 2012, 06:46:52 PM: I don't think it exist anymore. Chapter 257 (meets in Fife) is the only one on the I5 corridor, I believe. There may be one in Vancouver.

I wonder if several west side chapters would be beneficial or not? Skagit, island, and whatcom must have plenty of pheasant hunters that would like to join up but would rather keep it local. then there is the whole peninsula.

To do what?

work with wdfw to find new release sites in our areas.
maintain and improve the ones we got.
help fight to save release sites that are being threatened or shutdown.
help fight to stop DU and WWA from flooding perfectly good pheasant release sites.
get volunteers to work with the release program.
have fancy shindigs where we can raffle things off.
meet up with other like minded individuals.
give the pheasant hunters in our area a voice and direction when we need it.
have local people talking to wdfw to make sure they don't overlook our little corner of the world when decisions go down.
start mentoring projects for kids from broken homes or limit resources
ect. ect.

maybe pheasants forever isn't the place to look for these things, maybe we need to start a Western Washington pheasant hunter/upland association. all the upland opportunities on the westside are pretty few and far between. even the put n take and pay to play are disappearing before our eyes.

Im not sure what organization was in charge but down by Oly I saw several "Upland restoration" areas. they were all well taken care of and they actually attracted and held hold over pheasants, wild quail and grouse. it would be cool to get more of those going.

For our local release sites ( on the Kitsap Peninsula) we have a group called the Peninsula bird hunters assoc. you could look it up online and contact some of the folks involved to see how it is doing. I know they keep the web site up pretty good. They used to have meeting each year in August (and may still) to get the plan for the year going. Who will get birds, who will release, who will open and close gates everyday, who will show up for the youth hunt, when the year end clean up will be, etc. They also would have a rep from WDFW, generally a game warden, and a rep from the DNR since our site are on DNR land. I used to participate before the kids got bigger and are into everything and it was a good time. I am a member of the PF chapter and in the last 7 years I have made one meeting, but all the banquets. I enjoyed the meeting but quickly felt out of place as I was one of the few in the room under the age of 50 and probably the only one under that age that was not there with my Dad. They have habitat projects and lots of plans but it is all on the east side and I believe on public land. I will certainly try to make more meetings but for me Fife at 600 on a Tuesday is tough. With my kids in sports and the boy having scouts every Tuesday with the awards ceremony generally the same night as the PF meeting, I can only do one and for now he wins. Good luck in your quest, and I hope you can find enough support in whatever you decide to do over that way.

I'm sure the biggest hurdle would be finding people with the TIME to organize, be the leaders and nag us all to the meetings, banquets and actually doing the improvements you are suggesting. It is a big commitment. Good luck.

Post by: ghosthunter on December 02, 2012, 08:39:05 PM: In the past Jim Splane was the man for PF in Skagit. He was awarded many rewards in regards to his work both Skagit and National. I think he is in the book.
