Title: NEW HUNTER DESPERATE FOR HELP
Post by: huntingdog16 on December 02, 2012, 12:34:12 PM: Hi I am 17, and I have wanted to start getting into big game hunting. I have never hunted in my life only fished. I would like to learn how to bow hunt. I live in skagit county,wa near Sedro Wolley. Any tips help. Thank you for reading and helping.

Next, try to find friends at school who hunt and ask if you can go along sometime. Also, ask your parents if you can sign up for a hunter education class in your area. You can google WDFW and get on their site and find a list of classes throughout the state. Also, see if there is a shooting range or gun club or bow range in your area and ask your parents if they will take you there. There might also be an archery shop with an indoor range, but you need to ask your parents about all of this before taking any further steps.

Post by: texasbuckmaster on December 02, 2012, 12:50:26 PM: if your dead set on bow hunting i would suggest getting with someone who knows a bit about the sport so they could help you with choosing the right bow and teach you the right way to pull back and hold your bow, tune your sight and etc. other than that i will just say once you have a bow practice practice practice. Their is no worse feeling than hunting for days on end and finally getting a shot and missing. I work in the archery shop at wholesale sports in lacey so if you have any other questions just let me know i love getting others into the great sport of bow hunting.

You live close by! If you get a bow or just want to come check us out. We are open to the public and have several 3d shoots each year. we are CHEEP to belong to as a club member. Business meeting is the 1st Monday of each month 7pm... We will be starting our indoor flint round games soon. A great way to develop/ hone your shooting skills. It helped me a bunch.

Get out on weekends and start scouting now! Get up early! It will help keep you out of trouble:) As other suggested start talking to others about hunting. Be careful of who you hang out with as you can get in trouble by just being with them. Judging from the interest in young females in archery and hunting you may find some company that smells good in the morning to scout with!

Although this year is pretty much done, you can really do a lot between now and next season to prepare yourself for a good hunt.

There is a lot more to hunting than just buying a tag and going afield. There has been some good advice shared and here is some more.

All of the successful hunters that I know, basically hunt year around. What I mean by hunt year around is simply this: They shed hunt in January, February, and March. They are glassing clear cuts in June, July, and August, and setting up trail cams year around.

January and February are 2 of my favorite months to be walking in the woods. The under story is dead and you can get the lay of your land much better, visiblity is better and you can walk in the woods without all of the brushy stuff.

There are a few books that you can read as well. Cameron Hanes "Bowhunting Trophy Blacktail" and Scott Haugens "Trophy Blacktail" the science of the hunt.

There are plenty of guys on here that can help you out and I will help you in anyway I can.

Also, you should really think about joining a local hunting organization and attending meetings. You will find comradery and folks that will help you out and more than likely be contributing to a good conservation organization.
