So today I was heading to a co-worker's house to hunt Blacktail on his property which he says is swarming with deer. As I pulled up to his driveway I saw another driver pulling something off the road. When he pulled away I stepped out to see what was going on. I found a Deer on the embankment that had obviously been gut-shot by an arrow. Probably someone hunting around the spot I was heading. She was sitting miserably there just shaking. I thought about moving on and going to my friend's house but I just couldn't bring myself to leave her sitting there. I didn't judge her as a big doe when I was standing there and was regretting having to fill my tag with her but I was convinced it was the right thing to do. I grabbed my Bow and an arrow and finished her off. All in all it was a really sad ordeal. I got my friend and he helped me load her in my truck (she was much bigger than I thought) and as we were doing so the County Sheriff stopped by to ask what we were up to. I explained what happened and he was appreciative that I took her because she could have made her way into the road again if I hadn't. I feel a bit guilty grabbing another hunter's Deer but I had no way of knowing if he was just around the corner and gave him about a half hour before I had her in the truck. She didn't bleed much at first and I found out it was because he knicked her kidneys as the arrow passed through and she had been bleeding internally. Before anyone gets worked up, she and I were NOT on the maintained portion of the road. Please don't flame the heck out of the hunter who lost her as it seemed like a relatively fresh shot as I don't think she'd have lived long with as much internal bleeding as she had. It was a bad shot and many people around here have put an arrow where they didn't mean to. If you're on here, thanks for dinner, it was good! Time to wash the blood off and go to bed, tag filled, season done, conscious clear. P.S. I have no pictures as it didn't really seem like a picture worthy event. :sry:

Good on you.

Good on ya!!! It's about respecting the animal not the hunter. Glad you were able to put her to good use and she'll feed your family nicely.

Well done.

Very classy and ethical move.

Thank you!

Maybe not the hunt you were dreaming of, but you did the right thing. When the scores are tallied you got meat in the freezer and you ended an animal's suffering.
-
awesome man, thats a pretty sad picture that poor doe shaking and suffering like that. I know it happens but it wouldn't happen near as much if people would practice more and take ethical shots. Alot of donkeys out there :(

No one will flame you, you did the right thing

As far as making a good shot..don't you think with the winds we been having that the arrow could have easily been thrown off course? :dunno:

Thanks a lot guys for all of the positive responses. I suppose I couldn't have earned more of your respect by bringing down a trophy buck. The biggest reward is getting to be a part of a community of hunters who share my values. After getting her all dressed out I found she was much meatier than I thought she'd be. No idea on weight but I suspect she might have been a non-productive doe who's been doing nothing but putting on pounds. My only regret was not preparing better and learning how to skin a deer to save hide. Her's was REALLY soft, not like a lot of buck hides I'd felt in the past. Would have been cool to keep as I don't really plan on hunting Doe for their skin in the future. Oh well, I'll learn.
RadSav, You'll be hearing from me soon ;-), thanks for the offer I appreciate it.
3nails, I will take you up on that offer when the season opens next year if it's still available. I had NO luck with Bear this year and could definitely use a few pointers. I have no hunters in my family so I'm very happy to meet new people and learn from them.
Russ_mcdonald, I absolutely think there can be a lot of factors to throw off a shot. I hope I didn't come across as too negative about the original hunter. It was evening, getting dark, and I could easily be in his or her shoes. Better to leave the judging to someone else. It's also a densely populated area and if a deer doesn't drop in thirty yards around here it's gonna jump a fence and be somewhere else quick.
h2ohunter, I agree, would have been worth it if she was on the white line!
A final note, I'm happy to announce that my most Anti-Hunting co-worker was appreciative of how things went down yesterday. It only took a couple of hours for him to regress and start calling me a filthy poacher again but that's ok because I had a couple of hours of peace.

i agree your the type of hunter i would hunt with. I was helping a buddy on an elk hunt when we ran into a couple kids who told us they had a cow elk walk under their stands with an arrow hanging out with a bad limp. they didn't shoot because they wanted a bull. i guess its their tag to fill but i didn't like the decision. Good on you for taking the doe. congrats
