Title: Public hunting land near Mattawa?
Post by: jkhbuchanan on December 07, 2012, 09:22:15 AM
I have relatives that own a house in the desert aire community just south of mattawa. I am planning on making a weekend trip over there soon. I am trying to find public land around the area for hunting coyotes or if anyone knows of private land owners even that want coyotes gone. I have googled public land around mattawa but the information around that area seams to be very limited. Any info would help and be very appreciated. Thanks!

If you go north to Beverly there is the Lower Crab Creek Wildlife Area.  Also there is some Bureau of Reclamation land along the river.  The Saddle Mountains have some BLM land, but make sure you know where you are at because there is also some USFWS land too.  The White Bluffs is south of the highway, not sure if you can shoot coyotes on it or not.  Check the regs on it.

I have never heard this or read it anywhere.  I know it is a restricted weapon area,  but nothing states the limitation on coyote hunting.

Lower Crab Creek should keep you plenty busy. Lots of coyotes there. Go thin them out to save some of the upland birds!  :)

I can confirm that the HRNM is a protected coyote sanctuary. I had that exact discussion with State Wildlife law enforcement less than a week ago.

Bring your shotgun. the area is very flat with chest high sage. Limited visibility in most spots. And then there is the wind...
