Title: Best ammo to shoot thru 22-250
Post by: Hunter1990 on December 13, 2012, 09:57:01 AM
Im currently using 45gr. winchester varmint rounds, and they seem to be shooting pretty good. I havent really shot out past 200 yrds with it, and for 32$ for a box of 40 i cant really complain. But im curious if there is anything better for hunting bobcats, that wont make a huge exit hole. The coyote i shot with the winchesters put about a 2 1/2" exit hole lol. But on the other note i did get lucky on the bobcat i shot with them at 60yrds it had a very little exit hole.

Just lookin to see what other input i can get from guys with 22-250 cal rifles!

thanks guys

ive shot the 45gr winchester varmint rounds and the 45gr remington pmc hollow points and the 55gr winchester silvertips through mine, all shoot great although my 22 250 groups best with 55gr silvertips can get a three leaf clover at 100yds the 45gr rounds shoot well too but ive never tried shooting a group with them.

ive never had a shot a bobby so i cant help there but ive shot prairie dogs, prairie gophers, rock chucks and coyotes with all three and all of them were pretty devastating there wasnt much left of the p dogs or gophers even at 300yds and none of the coyotes were salvagable. the last coyote i hit was with the 45gr. rems while it was doing the spin after my buddy winged it, i hit it just infront of the pelvis and practically gutted it at about 70yds.

Ya lol the coyote i shot with those 45gr. winchesters right behind the shoulder at about 80yrds and when i picked it up by the hind legs chunks of lungs started ooozing out, lol. just would hate to ruin a cat pelt if i see another one. I looked for FMJ 22-250 bullets but i havent seen any anywhere.

Sounds like cat hunting is a good excuse to go get another rifle..............maybe a .204 :twocents:

Short of handloading or getting another rifle, I would see if they make "Reduced Power Loads" for that caliber like they do for bigger game hunting.  Slowing down the bullet might lessen pelt damage on cats.  They have pretty thin skins.  A .204 with 32 grain V-Max bullets don't even exit on a coyote.  Just liquifys their innards!  :chuckle:
