Title: live trap seen near North Bend???
Post by: usmc74 on December 16, 2012, 05:08:33 PM
Hunting buddy was walking his dogs about 1 1/2 miles behind a DNR gate.  One of his dogs got caught in a live trap.  About 2 foot square by 3 feet long, had a drop type door.  Was baited with a chunk of deer meat (had hair).  WTF!

He contacted law enforsement and told them where it was.  On todays walk, there were tire tracks in the snow, and the trap was gone.

What would they have been trying to catch live?  Cats?  Wolves?  Coyotes?

Coyotes or cats is likely, also, live traps are the only kind that can be legally used by the average trapper.

Sure it was a DNR gate? I know of a cougar trap near North Bend on Hancock lands. FYI, cougar traps are typically baited with roadkill deer.

not coyote or cougar trap. to small of a cage for those animals. Not many even attempt to live catch coyotes its so rare. sounds like a large coon trap or bobcat trap. Someone was exercising their sport hobby interest and your Buddy's dog got caught and I'm sure was unharmed so why are you all upset or mad?

Yup, just WTF

Since he didn't have his "readers" it took a bit to release his dog.

Yes, it was a DNR gate.  The guy drove behind gate to pull the trap

Driving behind the gate to pull a trap and baiting with chunks of deer seems to indicate that it was someone official doing the trapping.  No?

2x2x3 with a straight down dropping door also should be big enough for coyote and bobcat.  How big is the dog that got "caught"?

Depending upon where you are at in NB, there are a few folks who own property deep inside the gates.

Sounds like a typical cat trap. The ones we make are 18"x24"x48" usually double door but some have a single. Lots of guys use smaller ones. I've seen lots cats caught in the 12"x12"x36" traps. Sounds perfectly legal as long as the deer meat wasn't usable. If there was a chunk of hair attached it most likely wasn't.  I know I had a guy get a dog caught in one of my traps up here in AK (it wasn't a box trap) and he called fish and game and took my trap. They cited him heavy for taking my trap and not having his dog on a leash. People don't realize if a trapper is following all the laws fish and game is on your side and will put the smack down on people that mess with your stuff.

I spoke with the guy today who owns the trap. Some stuff as reported is wrong.
First thing there was no deer meat in the trap. The bait was  beaver meat and he did have a piece of fur hanging for an attractant.
Second thing the guy has a key to the gate to access private land behind the gate.
Third thing is the reason the trap was pulled the next day was because he was afraid he would not be able to get to it because of snow pileing up.
I really can't see what the problem anyone would have with the trap. Dog caught, unharmed and let out. Trapper checking his trap every day and pulls because he fears he might not be able to check because of snow.
100s of trappers in the state and it is trapping season. Is it any wonder someone might find a trap?
If you are a non-trapper please understand some people fish some hunt and some trap. This is our time. If you happen upon a trap please do not tamper with it. It is against the law.

There is a leash law in all of king county too, doesnt matter if you in the woods or not. Saw the game warden write a ticket to a guy just the other for that very thing.
