OK so looking to replace my old truck one of these days soon. Problem is the age my kids are getting to be, it kind of needs to be a crewcab, and all the new trucks I look at seem to have problems. The newer chevy's seem to have shifting/clunking/transmission problems, and the new fords have similar problems. There were even apparently a batch of 2011 F150's with faulty transmission pumps or something-where they would dump nearly all their trans fluid on the side of the road.. I've always had Fords, and i've seen way more problems with dodges over the years than any other brand. I tend to lean towards the Chevy, because they offer 21-22mpg highway with the 5.3, and the only ford that comes close is the new hopped up V6 (which is not available in the supercrew4x4)... I know everybody has Brand loyalty, but it's aggravating to see both brands having problems, What do you all think?
-
Buy the Ford RAPTOR crewcab! they don't have problems and you can jump them!
-
yeah cause the regular ones arent stupid expensive enough..
-
For comfort I prefer Chevy over Ford. My dad has had a 2006 f150 and now has a 2012 with the eco boost. They are both boxy and uncomfortable to me. My mom has a 2007 Tahoe, I know not brand new, but its WAY nicer to drive. Sight lines are much nicer and the interior is much more comfortable.
Maintenance and performance wise neither takes the cake IMO. If I had to choose though I would go Chevy, I prefer the ride over Ford

Buy a Tundra and be done with it  Seriously though, if you haven't test driven one you should take one for a spin before you make up your mind.

Go look at a Nissan Titan Pro 4X, very nice truck with lots of leg room front and rear.

I like Ford and Chevy best out of all the new trucks. And you can get the 3.5L V6 Ecoboost in the Super Crew 4X4. All of the F150 models have the option of the ecoboost. The Ford F150 w/ Ecoboost will haul more and has better payload capacity than the Chevy...........I'd give the edge to the Ford. :twocents:

The tundras are looking better to me but there going to get 14mpg? I've never been a ford fan, nothing drives as well as a chevy
-
I've thought about the tundra, but never really looked at one, I dont think it will be discounted as much as the ford or chevy, would probably cost several grand more. (but i'll look) I have a friend that has a z71 ext cab with the 5.3, and he gets about 22mpg on the highway- guess I need to drive one and see about the ride. The Titan has had it's share of problems, rear differentials, brakes, etc. and when i looked at milage ratings and such on line, the titan was the worst, with city mileage of like 12mpg.. the titan and the dodge can be gotten the cheapest.. but I tend to keep a truck 10 years or more, and I want something that will last...

And get 14MPG ,better have a deep wallet if you drive alot. Not being a jerk but their MPG is a lie.You will never see 18MPG in these unless you modify it and dump 5K into them

04-07 Duramax
-
:yeah: The 07 duramax classic 3\4 or one ton  my favorite
Dodge 03-04 HO with the nv5600 6spd and 3.73 gears another great truck
-
I will agree on the duramax. Had an 04 with 135000. Never had a problem with it. Got 21 MPG after installing a chip and exhaust. Can't beat the ride of a Chevy.

In the 4.6 it's doable, I averaged 17.5 with mine before I swapped tires. With the 5.7 no way it's possible.

I had a 2010 F150 4.6. Worthless. Wouldn't pull my trailer without overheating big time. Gutless pulling anything. Bought a 2011 Chevy LT Supercrew, 5.3, OMG. what a difference. Heated mirrors, Sirius radio, OnStar, comfy with about 14.9 mpg. I have big tires on it with Flow Master dual exhaust, airbags for towing too.

Haven't you seen the end of the world commercial where the guy driving the fore didn't make it? You got to get the Chevy :IBCOOL:

285/70/17 I also had the 2 inch spacer installed in the front. My nice chrome wheels rub a bit on my mud flaps because of the offset.

i got the 2012 F250 6.7 diesel...love it. plenty of power/torque for me. pulls my 26' trailer with no problem. this decision made after 4 mos of bickering back and forth with dodge/chevy/ford. plenty of room. didn't get all the bells and whistles but you could for the right $$$... oh, and i'm running 35's and get about 15-17mpg city, 17-19mpg hiway...depending on if i can keep my foot out the pedal. :IBCOOL:

That's a 45K option, 04-07 duramax is half that :twocents:

I love my all black 2007 Chevy Silverado Crew Cab. 6.0ltr vortecMAX LTZ. Way more truck than I intended to buy (too many fancy options), but I got a deal I couldn't pass up. Loving the heated leather seats after a long morning of steelheading in the river while it's 25 degrees out. I know, I'm getting old and sissified... But I won't lie. I like the seats. Sun roof is a nice touch as well. And my wife loves it when I take her out on dates in it. It cleans up nice for a night on the town, and yet handles the back roads and mud just fine.
We did a road trip this fall from WA to Montana and Wyoming and back. Then again a few weeks ago from WA to California to Tucson, AZ and back (including a nasty crossing at Grants Pass). Truck was awesome. I never got sore or uncomfortable in the seats. Best road trip vehicle I've ever been in. I've only had it a few years now. But it will be pushing 145k miles, and between me and the previous owner, it has never had an issue.
The only down side has been the gas mileage. The last road trip, where I did nearly all highway miles (but averaging 75-80mph), we ohly got 14mpg. But I love the power and responsiveness, so I can deal with that

What kind of real world milage are they getting?
Another question I have, Since I have never owned a diesel,
Has anyone done a comparison of the cost of diesel factored into the gas milage saving diesels usually have over gas?
Diesal is usually anywhere from .50 cents a gallon more expensive. That's roughly 20% - 25% increase in cost on a tank of gas?

I did it before I bought my new truck. I would have had to average 18+mpg with a diesel just to break even on fuel costs. When you start to factor in the initial purchase price and other maintenance (mainly oil changes) it takes a long time for the diesel to pay for itself.

The main reason to own a deisel is for long hauls and towing... Thats it. (at least in trucks) Most people make a comprimise when it comes to owning a full size deisel. What many people should do is buy a deisel and have use some econocar for communting... Short haul in a 3/4 1ton 4x4 deisel is not what they are designed for. Its kinda like using a sledgehammer to swat a fly. :twocents:

Lately there has been a new thing for kids with getting diesels. They don't care what it is its just got to be a diesel, loud, and smoke a lot.
Then they slap some HID headlights on, cut the muffler and cat out, stick a stack or two on and let the smoke roll.
I rarely drive my 07 F350, I would much rather do my daily driving in my Tacoma, parking is a lot easier and saves wear and tear on the ford for when I need to haul the boat, or maybe an out of state hunting trip. The king ranch seats are a nice change every once and a while though.
-
I would continue to look at Chevy, Ford and Dodge. The guys who keep pushing Tundras, they have had problems just like the others. In my opinion Toyota makes a great small truck, but lack a lot in the full size market. Have you ever driven a Tundra off road on very bumpy terrain? I have and the gas pedal was super sensitive, the RPMs where jumping all over making the ride feel like crap.
I have had 2 Chevys and have had no negative comments about both of them.(2003 and 2007 new body style) I have seen a lot of good comments on the new Eco boost from Ford, but also I have read some horrible reviews of a couple owners that have had major problems with that engine. Also the new Dodges have seemed to be doing well with a few minor problems.
I agree with special T diesel is not the way to go unless you are going to be using the truck. Diesels are meant to work not drive to work and drive home. Even with the newer diesels you really don't get the saving with mpgs.
-
I dont pull or haul enough to make it worth buying a diesel. I think the heaviest thing that I have hauled in my '03 ford was a bull elk.. it's a 4.6, and has been fine for what i do. Yeah looking online reveals problems with just about everyone. Some folks having shifting/clunking problems with both ford and chevy new 6 speed automatics, some engine problems with the new ford Ecoboost..Even a batch of 2011 fords with total transmission failre before 10,000 miles.. never know whether the reports you see online are problems one percent of the new trucks are having- or 50 percent.. Always been a Ford guy, but the Chevy 5.3 that shuts down to 4 cyl operation under low load conditions seems to make more sense than the ecoboost.. for those with 5.3 chevy's what kind of MPG are you getting? The Ram advertises the same technology but everyone I know that drives one isnt real positive about MPG results..
-
I have a 2008 Chevy Crew with the 5.3 a 6" lift with 35's I get around 14MPG. I got 77,000 miles never had a problem yet.
-
I just got a double cab Tacoma and love it! Averaging 19mpg after three tanks. The quality, ride, feel... everything is far superior to any Ford I've had or been in. Thought about an F150 with Ecoboost but read about far too many issues of the engine cutting out plus the Toyota will hold its value longer and likely have fewer problems in the long run.

Did you calibrate your speedometer for the bigger tires?
I just traded in my '04 with the 5.3. I was getting about 15mpg commuting back and forth to work. My new truck is an '11 with the 5.3 that shuts down to 4cyl. I am running 295/70/18's with a 4" lift. I will post my mpg after I fill up on my way home.

I have talked to 20 different people that have purchased ecoboost f150's and one electrical problem that was fixed and never re-occurred are the only complaints I have heard so far.
highway mileage has ranged from 18-23 depending on which individual you talk to.
I have never heard of that transmission problem you mentioned, and that transmission was included on the 2009-2010 models as well.
I have been looking real hard at buying a 2009-2010 used with the 5.4 motor with the 6speed transmission, but I have committed to waiting another 9 to 18 months. I really don't like car payments, but also need ths space for kids and car seats.
-
I've got a '12 F150 Ecoboost Lariat (Off Road). It is a beautiful truck. I have had it about a year, but only have about 6k miles on it.
It averages about 17-18mpg, but it is FAST and I drive it FAST :chuckle: I have driven it "gently" just to see what I can get and it'll do 21-22 at 65 mph. I usually do about 80 mph over the pass to vantage and 70 from there back home to Colfax and I will average about 17 or so.
Did I mention that it is fast?

Just filled up. 15.4mpg and that included a trip up into the hills to play in the snow on Tuesday. With a tuner, I should be able to squeeze a couple more mpg out of 'er. Mind you, this is with 34" tires and a 4" lift. :twocents:

My 2007 5.3 Chevy with the active fuel management. Which is the cylinder cut off feature. I was getting around 15 - 16 in town and about 18-20 on the freeway. I used to watch the display on the dash and it wasn't shifting into 4 cylinder mode very often. This could of changed in newer years but I don't think it was worth it. Even driving down Vantage it would kick on for a couple minutes. I had a crew cab 4x4 1500 with 3.73 rear ratio.

Sorry but I gotta say it CUMMINS u won't regret it
That's about the only good thinG about a dodge is cummins , everything else on the dodge is garbage , rough ride and just about everything other then motor falls apart

FF4607 is right, the Tundra has had its issues. First, a low, intermittent growl sound began. Toyota replaced multiple parts in the rear end. Still was hearing a noise, took it to another Toyota dealer, and they replaced 16 parts in the front end, and the water pump was leaking so it was replaced. Been a year now, with no new issues. We bought the Tundra thinking it was the best option for reliability. :chuckle: Also, FF4607 hit on something very pertinent. The gas pedal is super sensitive for driving off road. Not fun. it is near impossible to drive it smoothly off road due the changes in RPM cause of that crazy gas pedal. The 5.7 V8 is a power house! Lots of towing power. Average MPG is 15.5, up to 18 at highway speed.
-
I never go to dealers anymore. I have had too many throw parts at the vehicle to fix it. I can do that my self until the problem is fixed for much less $$$ your supposed to pay for EXPERTISE not some hack job! :bash:
