Title: if you jump a blacktail
Post by: pastormike on December 25, 2012, 05:57:18 PM
If you jump a blackie...
1. Should you hang there for awhile...will they come back around?
2. Will that be a place to post up in the future, or will they leave it alone after they are jumped?

I jump 2 today but left them alone after...so, they just got up and kinda skipped off. Will they be there tomorrow?
Pleas advise....I've been trying to figure these guys out for 4 yrs. Now...starting to get embarrassing and definately more difficult to justify buying equip. To my wife!

Thanks for any help in advance and Merry Christmas!

Blacktails won't blow out of the country. Chances they will be within a mile or so.

I don't believe a blacktail will leave the country unless its heavily pressured and pursued. However you just educated them, and they will be tougher to find in the future, but my guess is they will still be there.

if its a buck he will just hit the thick stuff and wait for you to make another mistake. watch the wind and set up cameras to see they are doing. if you keep jumping them in one spot find out why they prefer that spot over others.

Its been my experience that they will usually run 80-100 yards and stop if they are in timber our reprod. I have killed many blacktails by jumping them and listening were they go. I head for where they went and try to see them before they takeoff. If I jump them again, I just repeat the process until I get a shot or they blowout of the area. Some of them get curious and will stand there while you are stalking up to them. Most of the blacktails I have killed have been at less than 40 yards.

When you jump them the hunt starts again. Don't figure they are gone. Slow down, work the wind, use your binocs, keep working the deer. You may get a shot later.... Make this single deer your hunt.

Cut 100 yds downwind real quickly, sometimes you'll catch them circling back to get behind you.

All good points here...

While I haven't done it with archery gear, I have with rifle and pistol before... Jump them, then let them settle again. Go where they were and look at what gave you up from where you were spotted/winded. Learn from it. They'll move to something that probably gives just the same opportunity. Super quietly, circle beyond where they went, playing the wind and views. Try to get the upper ground and work in once you see them.

How close are the deer when you jump them? I think you are "hunting" too quickly...  Read Boyd Iversons Black tail trophy tactics 2 It will enlightne you a BUNCH about BT deer.

ok...what happened was a truck came by and I stopped to look at them pass, took a step and busted...they were 60 yards north, up wind and gently trotted off into the wind, not looking, but had their ears pointed my way...it wasn't the truck that got em up, I know...they were bedded ten ft below the upper edge of a large bowl I was working around I think the truck piqued their attention then they heard/saw me...yes, I was probly working a little too fast too...best darn hunt I've had in 4 years though...Hopefully better conditions in a bout an hour cuz im headin back out.

When in the heart of hunting, I think its best to move REALLY slow. take a step, look around, step, look around. I also like ot make bigger movements when there is another noise to cover mine up if i have to do something...

A huge buck will jump and go about a half a damn step and hunker down, a doe will head for parts unknown, after huntn the grey ghost for many years I know this all to well, a lot of time a big buck beds on stuff where he can move a very short distance and hide in plain sight, if you jump a buck and you see him hunker down, you will have to go right at him, the longer you give him the further he will crawl his sly butt away, and a lot of times you will walk right to the spo where he should be standing and then you will see a tiny piece of him standing or laying just feet away, do not make eye contact if you can, look above him and scan while your raising your gun or bow, good luck to ya

This is all to true. I have watched b.t. bucks lay their head down in the ferns in hopes that you will just walk by. I have walked to within feet of them bedded down before busting them. As said they often will not go far. My uncle shot one last year that he jumped and listened to it move away. He heard it stop he estimated 100 yards or so away from him. Me moved forward 40 yards quickly then stopped and started glassing heavily ahead of him. Took him about half an hour and 20 more yards to find him bedded down again in the ferns next to a log. Spotted the white ring around his eye through the brush. One shot at 40 yards and done.

:yeah: Very true. I hunt blktails and over the years I noteiced when I work the wind and jump a blktail they run and stop 30 yards or so. I scan the area for ears and antlers. Most of the time they stop, but if the deer see me they will run or crawl away. Years ago I throw a stick in a brush pile and herd a deer jump up and then nothing. Most of the time I have found that it is more than likely a older deer or buck sneaking off. I radioed to my buddy which was 60 yards away when I jumped the deer. (talking to my buddy)  He is sneaking his way to you.  My buddy got on a tree dead fall and waited.  Five minutes went by then I herd a shot. He bagged a nice old 2x3. The old gray buck was on his belly crowling. My buddy said he was 15 yards away and he didn't know if it was a deer or a coyote, because in was so low to the ground until I saw the antlers. Then he shot him in the head with buck shot.  I have seen them sneak around me before. When possible I like to hope up on a log and toss rocks and branches to jump them. Just last week I had shoot a doe I jumped. The old doe didn't know if I was a deer so she ran, jumped ,and sneaked 30 yards away then stopped. I just scanned over the last place I saw her. I could see ears about 30 yards away just behind a dead fall. I took a neck shot with the muzzle because that was the only shot I had and dropped her. It was the last day and last 30 Min's of the season.  Freezer full.  Well good luck hope this helps.

So, based on what everybody has said...there weakness is this?

When u find/jump them, they react by being sneaky if they don't see or smel you that is...so work where u find them...
1. Super slow with binos
2. Staying downwind
3.if u hear them moving go downwind quick to possibly catch them trying to find ur scent
4. But if it Is a buck stop and glass
5. As swartzeneger said...if it bleeds u can kill it.
On it...

I have used cow elk urine to cover my scent and a bunch of it for some reason you can get real close to blackie bucks with it . I almost had to shake one off my leg last year . they will hold real tight often if you feel you have moved through a area to fast , stop and back track going real slow they will get nevous and move though with a bow but can be done.

Reprod is a term used for young, super thick trees that were planted in a clear cut. The stuff that is 6-20' tall and so thick its almost impenetrable. Blacktail love it.

Some great advice here. If you ever jump a big blackie buck in the snow you'll know exactly how deep their bag of tricks is... Everything from making big circles back to the spot they were spooked, to tight figure 8's with absolutely no pattern. I've seen em stop in a mid run, turn 90 degrees and jump 10 feet into some brush and keep running...then repeat. Considering that they're hunted their whole lives by cougars it's no surprise how well they can evade pursuers and hide a scent trail. The one thing i've been able to depend on most of the time is the fact that they rarely run straight away. So generally after jumping a buck i'll cut left or right depending on the terrain and wind, hoping i cut him off as he circles around.
