Howdy
I have been pouring custom plastic worms for over 30 years mainly for bass and bottomfish. I just started making them in steelhead colors and patterns. I see and hear of guys using artificial salmon eggs as clusters and singles. I have been seriously thinking about buying some hand pour and injection egg molds and making my own. I like to tweak my own color combinations. scents and a lot of those that I see in the store are just plain old straight colors. I prefer to use real eggs when I can but that old "make it myself" bug is getting the best of me. Since I have never fished with them I was curious what you folks think of artificial salmon eggs?
Thanks
-
I love them, always have some just above my real eggs
-
Polar, I would love to get some from you if you pull the trigger for this idea. I can PM you regarding what I am looking for. Something unique...
-
I would be interested in seeing some of your work.
-
I literally caught a steelhead on my first ever cast with rubber eggs (Egg-Bumpers as I recall). They work!
I like singles for fishing under a float, especially.
Pouring them sounds like an interesting project. And they do seem more expensive than they should be for the small bags at tackle stores. I like the softer ones more than the harder, even if they tear more.
-
I am really wanting to buy the injection molds but it would be a couple hundred bucks to get started and be able to do multi/bi color eggs. As with my bass worms, I make them super soft. They don't last nearly as long but I have found over the years (especially when I was tournament fishing) that the fish tend to bite harder and hold on longer the softer they are. I want to make fake eggs as soft as real ones. I also have an idea of making clusters with a transparent outside and a semi-tranparent core. I'm probably going to order some in a week or two. Once I get started and get my colors figured out I will see what you guys think and let you guys try them out!
Thanks for the input!

i have had alot of luck with EZ Eggs, i started using them a couple years ago, its all i use now.....
-
Just buy the mold tight ass so I can catch some fish on them fake eggs!
I just bought some gulp eggs, to test out. Btw I need you to buy me some vmc fast grips at sunbirds :chuckle:, oh I need some yarn too.....
-
Ez eggs work great caught many fish on them just need to watch the places you use them as they do contain scent ive used them in the columbia with great success on a jig. : :)

Paul, I just bought some #1 & #2 Fastgrip hooks at Sunbirds in Chehalis on Friday. The store in Yelm is all out.

I've tried a lot of them over the years. Found that the softer they were the better they worked. Never have taken a fish with the Gooey Bob though I've fished them hard. Best I found were in Canada at Fred's Tackle in Chilliwack. They were a four leaf clover of the softest plastic I've ever seen. Sorry I can not remember the name of them. One baggy was crawfish scented and the fish absolutely slammed them. Some of the hardest strikes I've ever had on soft plastics. I will PM you if I remember who made them.
The guys at Fred's talked me into adding a little light colored yarn applied above the egg sack to stream it over the eggs. Said it gave both a milking egg presentation and helped it catch on the fish's teeth. Hard to compare catching fish up there to down here. But my strike to hookset ratio was sky high on that trip. If I ever get a chance to winter fish again I'll be using them the exact same way.
-
They are good for more than just fishing by themselves. Take a sandshrimp tail and thread it so the end of the tail is going up the leader away from the hook. Run 2 eggs up your hook and over the eye of the hook and slide the shrimp down onto the eggs and insert them into the cavity of the shrimp. The eggs add a little buoyancy and you don't have to mess with your bait loop cutting the shrimp. It's a deadly technique drifted or under a float.
I'm was gonna start pouring soon but I just dumped a whole bunch of money into rod building equipment. Poor me... :chuckle:
-
They seem to work fine. I've caught fish using them with yarn balls and with bait.
-
Alright, I'm pulling the trigger on the egg mold. My question is what size do you prefer? I am trying to decide between 1/4" or 5/16" singles. :dunno:
-
I would choose 5/16 for singles.
-
I would choose 5/16 for singles.
:yeah:
But this comes from a dry lander!
-
Well, technically they are singles in a string like EZ Eggs.
-
The linked eggs like Ez-eggs are better for me as they tie better.
-
I ordered the molds last weekend and should be getting them tomorrow. Going to spend the weekend working up colors.
-
Well here is my first attempt at them, still working out the bugs and colors. I definitely need the bigger mold! This one only makes 4 strands of 10 at a time. It is perfect for working up colors but will be a pain in the butt for production. It is hard to tell from the pic but the set on the right is the same color as the left only with pink pearl powder in it. It darkens them up just a touch. They shimmer very nicely in the water in the sunlight.

nice!
-
Thanks! I just picked up a new jug of plastic and some more vibrant, fluorescent, transparent colors. Tonight and after the Hawks game tomorrow I am going to work up a better red, pink, orange and chartreuse. Gotta talk to my local expert to make sure the size is right and get the final okay on colors before I order the production molds and kick it into high gear.
-
Interested to see what other magic you have up your sleeve!!

:dunno: :chuckle:

Boom Done!! :chuckle:
-
Here are some larger eggs (5/16") and a couple of different colors. Wadda ya think?

The first pic, the ones on the left look like money! The last few years ive really been banging them on the color that looks identical to that!
-
I really like the peach color and the pink.
-
those are good looking
-
That first picture....left side...as mentioned....those are nice!
-
I agree with the first pict on left is a good color. I like your orange and pink..
-
Nice you are on to something. I catch alot of summer fish on them. I would fish your eggs.
-
Can you do them in clusters rather than inline?
-
Thank guys for all the input! I made a batch of the red that seems to be most popular tonight and am gonna make a few more tomorrow.
huntnphool..do you mean like these? This is my next mold but I need to start paying myself back for the other molds before I get the clusters. Buddies just take the strands, poke the first and every other egg through the hook and run it up to the egg loop to make a cluster.

looks great i love the red. works great for out on the hump and the clusters would slay under a lighter bobber for drifting. how hard is it to start making your own worms? i want to make some for seabass and maybe a shrimp tail would work nicly. how do you go about making your worms and such?
-
It's pretty easy once you get the hang of it. I've been doing it for 33 years. The trick is to not burn your plastic and keep track of your color formulas. You can also make your own molds from your favorite worms or grubs. I copied the Kalin's mogambo grub mold for bottom fish and a twin tail skampi. Pour either one of those in a 3 color laminate pattern and the bottom fish LOVE them.
The grub on the left is a rip off of the Mogambo. It is pretty rough but it is only for personal use. The worms on the right I designed in high school when I worked for a worm company. I own the only molds in existance. :chuckle: Send me a pm if you are interested in where to go to and what to buy to get started. It ain't cheap to get set up right but once you do it is a lot of fun being able to come up with your own color combos. I use to love it when I cam up with a hot color and I was the only one around that had it. :IBCOOL:

how can i make my own molds i have so many ideas for molds like a small crab that would work great for bottom and and like a creamy kind of brown 3 inches long and abot a1/4 inch round would kill cabazone and greenling
-
It might be cheaper to buy an already made mold. Lurecraft sells over 900 different molds and has a couple of different small crab, shrimp and scampi molds.
http://www.lurecraft.com/catalog.cfm/molds/plastic-molds/creature-molds/5x447:707 (http://www.lurecraft.com/catalog.cfm/molds/plastic-molds/creature-molds/5x447:707) If you want to make your own you can cast it with RTV silicone. Just make a frame, seal the joints, glue your original to the bottom, mix the 2 parts of the RTV, pour over the top of your original, tap the bubbles out and let it set up. Then all you have to do is take it out of the frame and remove the original. Where you really start getting into the money is the CNC machined aluminum injection molds like I got for the eggs. Some crawdad or worm molds can go for several hundred dollars each.
-
okay thank is the jig made of stuff you melt togeter or is it like a power and wet chemical you mix together and cast the jigs
-
The worms are liquid plastic that is the color and consistency of milk. You heat it up to 320-340 degrees where it thickens up and becomes clear. You let it heat up a little more and it becomes thinner and pourable. You add regular coloring after it has become clear and fluorescent coloring before heating while the liquid plastic is room temp, otherwise it will burn and clot.
-
alrighty cool thanks for the info

Here is some stuff the I whipped up today. The peach colored eggs glow in the dark. These are some of the colors that I have come up with so far. What other colors would you guys suggest?

Some dang fine work there Polarbear...those eggs are awesome!!!

Money, you should give a bunch away at work....
-
could you make a almost see threw pink with silver flakes?
Yeah but it won't be as transparent as the chartreuse.
-

Thank you very much!
-
Money, you should give a bunch away at work....
What you talkin' bout Willis? I already gave you a bunch, now your gonna have to pay! :chuckle: Dave doesn't even have free ones yet, but I made a special batch for him today.
-
Need some small pink ones, hit two fri both using them small red ones in my rig. Gonna need a few more small red ones too :chuckle:
-
Did you try the bigger ones or just the small. I don't have any small pink and only a few small red. I figured that the 5/16" would be the most popular. I'll make a few batches of small tomorrow. By the way, I made some of that clear flo orange and a glow in the dark pink that are sweeeeet! I'll show you at work on Monday since we are shipping together. :chuckle:
-
Great, your line down? I did, only thing that worked was one set up and we threw all types of stuff at em. Ill tell ya what it was at work, not on a public forum...... :chuckle:
-
:chuckle:
Yeah, my line is only scheduled to run 7-8 hours each day except Friday then we run Amp! Not looking forward to that.
-
I've always wanted to try a "nightmier" (red and black) pattern egg. I've done very well with several plastic egg clusters and have started seeing the nightmier color on the net, but have not found them in stors. Done well with the nightmier jig color for steelhead so I've been wanting to try them with these plastic egg clusters.
-
Last year I made some nightmare grubs for a guide. He said they worked well. I can't make these eggs in a multi color pattern but I could see where single black, white and red egg treaded on a hook or jig would work. I was actually thinking of making a batch of pure black eggs or maybe with a little red and silver flake in them just to see. :dunno:
-
Meh...I think using a white corkie with red or pink eggs and a tuff of black yarn would work to get the nightmear apperance. or maybe a white corkie, dark...DARK red eggs without the yarn? Anyway you go, i'm sure you can hook some fish.
-
Great looking eggs. Let us know when u start production. I'd be in for some steelhead worms too...
-
Thank you!
I'm in production already. Been selling a few eggs and worms (bass worms as well) and working on a website with paypal buttons. I think that I have all my major colors down. I'll take and post a pic tomorrow of what I have come up with.
-
Here are some of my colors so far. They are much brighter in person than in the pics.

Nice looking stuff!!
How small are the ones in the back row? Or is it just a optical delusion!!
-
Hey now, quite broadcasting my secret worm. Im the only one who gets to use it.....
-
Nice looking stuff!!
How small are the ones in the back row? Or is it just a optical delusion!!
The eggs that are closest are actually smaller (1/4") and the rest are 5/16"
The bigger worms are 4 3/4"
Paul, Don't worry, I put a special ingredient in yours! By the way, I got some UV anise oil today to try on them.
-
Wow. Those are all pretty neat. I thought I was up town spray painting buzz bombs. :chuckle:
-
Try some darker flo red worms. Killer...
-
The colors come out better in this pic.

I need to come visit and pick up some...
-
Absolutely!
-
you ever put u-v stuff in your eggs? when i tie steelhead flies i always have at least one part u-v. really think it helps. mike w
-
I'm trying to find a good uv plastic additive that won't burn but what I have found so far is very expensive. I have been adding a little Mike's UV Anise to the bags for a little lube.
-
i wonder if there is something you could add to the bait after it is made, like scent, etc. mike w
-
They will absorb whatever scent you put on them. For storage I just use unscented oil to keep them soft and from sticking. If I am taking them fishing I soak them in anise or shrimp oil. What is nice about soft plastics is they don't lose their color when fishing and will pick up any scent that you want. I just Put some Mike's UV Anise on a batch, going to lat it soak for a day or two then am going to hit it with a UV light to see if the UV has soaked into them or not.
-
Ive never poured plastics but I've wanted to for a while now, so I don't know if this will work but what about adding a bit of the pro-tec uv blast powder paint? It come white but turns clear when heated. Just an idea... :dunno:
-
Nubbs I do the same for my jig heads... I htink it makes a difference.
-
I'll try a tiny batch with the powder paint. My fear is since the plastic is around 340 degrees that the powder paint will solidify once cooled and ruin the texture of the egg. I'll try anything once though. I keep reading about how the UV has very little effect in clearer, shallow water such as streams or rivers. It's effectiveness is more in the 15' - 60' range in off color water. :dunno: I did find some UV additive specifically for soft plastics the is very reasonably priced, however the shipping alone is more than twice the price of the product. They will only ship UPS Ground. MAybe it is toxic or something? :dunno:
-
Have a snort when you get it....you should know pretty quickly.
-
:chuckle:
-
Got this up and running. Still tweaking on it a little and adding on. Check it out.
