Title: Man, they're good...
Post by: USAFpj on December 31, 2012, 12:02:48 PM
So I took my 8yr old son out today for his first duck hunt.  We got out to the site at 0700, pitched a dozen dekes out, and nestled into an adequate blind.  We had been seeing ducks fly out of range all morning, always coming from the West.  We're both staring left (towards West) when I hear a couple of muffled quacks out of my right ear :dunno:.  I turn to look, and a mallard is landing in the 'V' of my dekes :yike:.  I lose all calmness, coolness, and whatever patience I had and fumbled for my shotgun.  She starts swimming toward the closest deke, but then sees the one man circus going on in the blind :chuckle:.  She takes off and I'll blame my Modified choke on this one, didn't get her down.  Disappointing, but the boy had a great time and that's all that mattered.  What would she have done when she realized they were not real ducks?

Sometimes they will swim around the decoys for a while, calm down. I had a cormarant peck one of my goose decoys before. Here is one swimming in the decoys. I always shoot a modified choke is there something wrong with that?
