Title: Margeret unit elk hunting / special permit
Post by: Superfly on January 04, 2013, 04:12:22 AM
I know this is last minute but my hunting partner drew a margeret antlerless elk tag and we are leaving hear in a few to head down there. has anyone on here hunted this unit this year ? or does anyone have any vast knowledge that may help ? Weyco and the department have sent us maps and talked with my buddy on the phone and said basically hunt here and here and you should be able to drive right up on a cow and kill it....
He said really, you mean like hunting at northwest trek and they said yes that is how the cow hunting is there......I kind of don't belive that ******* but if so cool ! that means we wont have to stay there for as many days as we have planned for the hunt which is fine by me.........
I guess my main question is to you guys with knowledge of the area is where should we start and what are the best roads to access the best hunting, I know its mostly weyco property so any road numbers would be helpful,  also they made it sound like if we kill something in a bad spot we are suppossed to call them and they will come and help get it out...........********** if that is the case right after my friend dumps a cow I got them on speed dial to save my back !
I will have my laptop with me so I will be checking back here and when we kill something I will post a pic or two..........thanks

Peace

It might be worth a try to actually look at the map and maybe follow directions. Would be a logical start

really dude, this guy is asking a simple question.........SUPERFLY, you wont have to work to hard to fill your cow tags, a guy i work with and his buddy hunted seriously for the first 15 minutes of shootn light and they tagged out, if i was you i would just kick around for a couple days and enjoy it before you tag out... good luck, cant wait for the pics

Yeah really, I agree with Buglebuster. This is a family site, read the rules for posting. There are plenty of other words that could have been used to keep it clean. After all, you think of the words you type, dont you?

Sounds like a slam dunk. Hope your hunt goes well and I'll look for the write up and pics afterwards.

I did not come here to get slammed, get plenty of that on the fishing sites.....just asking a few questions because I have killed plenty of elk, just never one anywhere near this area.
I just find it hard to believe that a bio would say its like hunting at NW trek, but if it is that is ok by me....
My friend with the tag is meeting me shortly then we are after them.....

Thanks,,,, I guess kid valley area is a good place to start....

2 of my friends shot their cows early on opening (Jan 1st) morning.  Both had hoof rot, one so badly that the WDFW reissued their tag and took the meat.

I don't think its as easy as a lot of people think it is, but then again I've never hunted it in January. Its also not a tough hunt. I have talked to a lot of people that are frustrated they are seeing a lot of elk from their trucks dirving around, and the ones they do see don't stick around... well duh, they've been hunted hard since september. Find some sign or decent trails and you won't have a problem getting on elk.

you can access the unit from the 2500 or the 3100. My wife had a any bull archery tag and we got closed out early season and the rifle cow hunters in there up to her late season. She had a shot and hit a branch but the elk were really spooky to get to close with a bow.Shouldn't have to much problem getting a cow with a rifle thought. Good luck

I agree with Sirmissalot, I havent hunted it in January, and not sure what gates are open, but there should be plenty of elk off hwy 504 on the north or south side side once you get to the western boundary (crossing the bridge over the Toutle just past where Green River dumps in).  Walk up most gated roads and you will get into elk. the 3100 would be a good choice.

I just went and filled my tag on tuesday. If you willing to get out of the truck and walk around a little its a real easy hunt. I saw 20 plus cows in one day before I took mine. Just a warning if you go north there is a lot of snow right now so I hope you have a good 4x4. Otherwise have fun! Its a great place to be and enjoy!
